Have you heard of the artist called "Tame Impala"? He's like, super underground, and barely anybody listens to his stuff. He basically reinvented psychadelic music by practically modernizing it by focusing more on synths and unexpected, but catchy hooks. His song "The less I know the better" is one of the greatest pieces of music ever made, hands down. Tame Impala isn't just a music artist, it's like an experience. It really is unfortunate to know how he isn't mainstream, but that's probably why I like his stuff so much. Every album he makes is completely different than the last, and he never repeats the same sound, but he still manages to retain his signature style. It's almost baffling that I managed to stumble upon his music, you should definitely check him out though, best music I've ever heard.
Did you know tame impala is just one guy?
im so glad they're multiple people too!

2010s Indie was was weird mix of College subculture...this stereotype was often portrayed as "Art Nerds" or technology engineers...yet I found it interesting how the Indiefication of Internet Playlists effected the way we perceive 'Indie Music' to be from that perspective...because in reality, if you asked ten people, "what is an indie artist you listen to" in 2015, you would get some really intriguing answers from people who were interested in the music...however half of them had never heard anything 'indie' before '2010's indie' so we were going thru a cultural reevaluation...all of a sudden the "Psychedelic Rock" band Tame Impala was now "Indie" even though Currents is actually Disco album...it was just another reminder that "Indie" as a term for culture was becoming more common...the xx, Sleigh Bells, Toro y Moi, everything was all of sudden now called "Indie" and if those types of people liked your music the terminology for describing your Jazz, Trip Hop, and Ambient Noise projects, was from here on, "Indie"
such an insightful and well thought out comment. surely i won’t be the only like
Yeah it's kind of crazy to me that Tame Impala were actually from the same neo-psych scene in Australia as bands like King Gizzard but they are now regarded as indie/tiktok music.

this MIGHT be indie
These are the biggest anthropologists of our time.
One of my friends was in the first indie band back in the seventies, The Count Bishops. The first indie band was based in south London and were indebted to Nuggets era garage and British freakbeat. I was involved with the 2000s indie scene and it wasn’t sleazy. Morris the Garage Gimp wasn’t fisting a Kate Jackson from The Long Blondes drag tribute on the dance floor while Pete Doherty was improvising a song about it.
Indie isn’t dead, it was always appropriated
but muh Ginger Root! 😭
This was the most I’m 23 and chronically online take to indie fashion
10:40 Anyone getting carhartts for fashion and not because their work necessitates it absolutely has money.
I was about to say the same thing. Carhartt is expensive as hell. No way a broke boy would be able to afford a 100 dollar Detroit jacket.
It was too expensive for me even I needed one at the time for that kind of work. I ended up buying one used off eBay lol had that thing for like 10 years now

I like how unironically you state all this stuff like it's a science.

the 9th level of post irony is a dangerous place.
Actually gagging at the depiction of indie boys back in 2014. I was 14 at the time and despite the fact that I went to a pwi, I hadn’t encountered many boys w this particular style. Most of the guys I grew up w either had no style or if they developed a style it wasn’t until the inevitable 2016 insta style that plagued everyone unfortunately. There were very few indie boys, but they either dressed like Mac demarco or like ponyboy curtis (and that’s no diss to pony, he’s golden therefore he’s cool). The “cooler” and more popular guys who had the closest to an indie/alt style were the rick and morty and zumiez skateboarders. As for the girls it was pretty much the same: pink yoga pants, ugg boots and an abundance of Abercrombie and hollister up until 2016 😵💫 I only cringe so heavily bc not only did I partake in the insta baddie style but I paired it w my nerdy/emo interests at the time. For some reason my goal was to look like a kylie jenner wannabe who was obsessed w black. So naturally that meant wearing chokers w “daddy” shirts, pleated skirts, ripped tights and chunky platform boots. Accompanying the fact that I’d blast emo and metal through my headphones so I could indirectly let my peers know that I also listen to harder shit. Being “duplicitous and multifaceted” was my goal and in turn no one truly gave a shit 😭😭😭 those were horrible times bro hs sucked

We are living in the time of nostalgia - right now it's the nostalgia for 00s-early 10s. It's kinda weird to watch the style from your past make a come back around the younger generation - like growing up in the 90s you can't imagine a group of kids that would start to dress up like it's 60s again, but now you can see all the styles at once all over the place. But what will be next, when all the older styles would be already rediscovered again? Will it be the new cycle of nostalgia or something new finally?
70’s nostalgia was def a thing in the 90’s
@@NeoPunkFM don't know about America, but there wasn't any 70s nostalgia in my country
I’m so glad I’m a 35yr old NPC and don’t have to think about this shit ever.
This just reminds me of modern philosophy talking about, I think it was called hyper conformity. An oversimplified verson of it would basicly be; in our capitalistic society, the very thing being described as anti-system gets sucked into it, and then becomes part of the system, so there's no escape. If you want more indepth, I would look into Jean Baudrillard, Mark Fisher, and Giles Deleuze, to name a few.
Rebellion is another product to be packaged and sold by the establishment
Yo neo punk fm I felt that 9:50, Babytron speaking facts
as a Rap and EDM fan i have an important question. what about independent ppl who make their own record label?
I would say it's been about a decade or maybe even two since hip hop became the true indie/punk genre.
@@itmeurdadagreed. I’m old and got to watch it happen, tge mainstream said “rock is dying”, fans knew it was long dead reanimated corpse, but punk was nearly dead, fully underground and moving into rap.

Indie’s not dead; the word is just misused. If you’re supporting local businesses and avoiding corporate consumption, listening to bands that aren’t signed to major record labels, wearing secondhand clothes, incorporating diy practices into your lifestyle, etc; you’re living the indie lifestyle. These things haven’t gone away; they have just been overshadowed by “indie.”
