    You guys need to reconsider some of your data visualization and presentation. Seeing frame after frame of near-identical stacked bar graphs flash past leaves the eyes pretty dazzled and makes it hard to absorb the information. If you want to present percentile and average data, box plots would be a way more readable format, and you should also consider pacing the script slightly slower to give the audience more time to read. Alternatively, you can plot the data (fps, temperature, what have you) over time under load, and it's easier for the eyes to pick out the low points and high points of each line.

      As someone who likes going over the graphs, I find myself pausing all the time. That's easy when I'm on the phone but not on the TV. Really appreciate you pointing this out.
      Realistically though, most people don't really look at the graphs carefully. They just want the summary, so they listen to the voice overs and go with it.

    The thing that was missed on this video: Scheduling gives near-fullscreen performance to games that are being run in windowed mode at the cost of performance for the secondary windows.
    I have a dual monitor setup and absolutely despise running my games in true fullscreen due to very frequently needing to tab over to other windows. For instance, running a game on my primary at 1440p on a 1080 (no TI) has gained anywhere from 10-25 FPS across the board, but will drop things like firefox to 3-4 FPS and introduce heavy tearing on my secondary monitor; but only while the game is in focus. Tabbing over, the secondary windows gains full priority and speed.

    • @WarrenGarabrandt
      @WarrenGarabrandt 4 роки тому +10

      I too noticed a substantial drop in frame rate for the new Edge when playing UA-cam content on my second monitor while playing a full screen game on the main display. I'm also running folding at home. It used to be that my games were severely impacted by F@H running, so I'd need to pause it and sometimes even reboot to restore performance. Now, I can leave F@H running and my games run just fine. It's definitely a tradeoff, but one I'm willing to make.

    • @MrDavibu
      @MrDavibu 4 роки тому +23

      I think this whole video was a shitshow. The explanation for scheduling was awful, I mean the name pretty much tells you what it does.
      A scheduler gives CPU-times-slices to a "program" to run. So it schedules all the tasks for the CPU.
      They talked about command batch sizes, as if Windows Vista introduced this problematic, but in reality batch sizes are always a trade of, not just for GPU's, as well as for HDD/SSD, as well as networking and much more.
      These charts are very bad, normally you would have a line in the middle as 100% and bars going either to the left for lower performance or to the right for higher performance.
      And in the end the message "how developers should hook into the scheduler" is exact opposite of what it should be like, a scheduler (at least a pre-emptive one) shouldn't change anything for the developer, that's the whole point of a scheduler. Maybe you are able to do a "yield" for giving up your time slice, but that's about it.
      I mean the biggest benefit will be faster scheduling and this will lead to performance in situations like you describe.
      A real-time application just as is shouldn't really benefit very much, because yes it's lower overhead but just in terms of latency, not in terms of throughput.
      It's like removing the orange light phase of a traffic light, will a car driver reach the destination faster? Yes, but just slightly, but if you have to stop for traffic lights all the time, there will be a benefit. And it's clear looking at the non-real-time applications, which will benefit from the long runtime and thus thousands if not millions of low latency context switches(Scheduler changing task) benefits accumulated.

    • @tylerdurden3722
      @tylerdurden3722 4 роки тому +6

      I don't think they are aware that Microsoft designed it so there would be no noticable difference (to make the transition smooth).
      One way to deal with a CPU bound bottleneck, is to increase the frame buffer (instructions are sent to the GPU in bigger chunks...in advance).
      Games will automatically adjust the frame buffer. You need a very keen eye to notice the difference in input lag this creates. So, this frame buffer solution is usually not noticed. Games, etc automatically adjusting the frame-buffer eats up the performance gains from this hardware acceleration...so that no difference is noticed.
      When you enable HAGPU Scheduling, the primary thing that happens, is the frame buffering is reduced as much as possible without either improving or reducing percieved performance.
      Of course, reducing your frame buffer does require extra CPU performance...so in a situation where your CPU is the bottlekneck, you would notice a significant increase bottleneck if you reduced the frame buffer (because it creates a more demanding load on the CPU).
      So, reducing your frame buffer, without any noticable effect on performance, is actually equivalent to having more CPU power to handle a reduced frame buffer.
      If the frame buffer were not reduced, and your bottleknecking was CPU bound then this trick would have reduced (or even eliminated) that CPU bound bottleknecking problem. So, I guess this is the eventual goal of this option as it evolves further...
      In BFV, I forced the "Future Frame Buffer" to stay enabled after enabling this hardware acceleration and it solved my brother's stuttery frames...on his laptop.

    "Faster Gaming for FREE in 2 minutes - No… Seriously
    "- Really? Didn't we have a couple of outright apology videos regarding clickbait titles a little while back?
    It's not two minutes (Right, fair enough, but...)
    It's a performance hit in just about every 'normal people' scenario, and a significant hit in gaming scenarios that are expected to be CPU bound. The end result appears to be "This could help speed up certain tasks, in certain very specific configurations, under certain circumstances, but on average will cost you significant performance under an average to mid-high-end setup running current software".
    I'm not saying I didn't like the content, but the posted title is totally out of line with the content. Disappointing.

    Edit: The title has been changed, the new title now reads: "Faster Gaming for FREE - Hardware GPU Scheduling Explained" - Entirely acceptable.

      That was certainly a bit of an oversight on their part. That said, I actually just so happened to find this setting today (shortly before seeing this video) while trying to find a fix for a rather annoying problem (sometimes when I re/start my computer it gets into this weird state where it recognizes I have 2 monitors but only outputs to display 2 forcing me to change it back).
      In order to activate GPU Scheduling:
      Open Display Settings (Right Click an empty space on the Desktop, 2nd from the bottom item).
      Open Graphics Settings (bottom most option on the page).
      The toggle should be right at the top of this menu, there's also an option for variable refresh rate and the option to prioritize either desktop or store apps.
      Also worth a note that this was added in the May 2020 update so even people like me who've opted to delay feature updates* should still have this update.
      *Requires Win10 Pro I think/helps ensure major bugs are patched out before getting the update.

    • @ms-dosguy6630
      @ms-dosguy6630 4 роки тому

      @Asoka S Not so much, if it actually shows some noticeable gains. Major engine developers would probably latch on to this quite sooner than GPU drivers manufacturers though. Overall at any rate if this actually benefits some games noticeably then it might come along sooner rather than later.

    • @ms-dosguy6630
      @ms-dosguy6630 4 роки тому

      @Asoka S The fact that it is implemented will entice people to use it? That isn't a very hard concept to understand. If I'm marketing a game engine, and something that is new and has absolute concrete potential, then I think implementing that idea would certainly boost people into using my commercial engine, especially if gamers pick up on it such as Linus Tech Tips. Obviously, this isn't the case now, but later down the line it very well could be if their are some more noticeable gains, right now there is potential but certainly not absolute concrete potential that may result in something worthwhile. That said, it looks promising and as someone who is working on my own game engine it certainly looks somewhat tempting to give this a shot. I'm not doing it now, because I don't want it to end up being a waste of time. I'm just playing things by ear and seeing how this develops but it could certainly give leeway into having some marketing advantages since their *is* concrete evidence that this does have a performance gain ( albeit quite negligible ) . Whether or not it becomes more significant as more games support it is dependent on many factors and thus concludes the reason why I want to wait out on it.

      @Asoka S Why would they reduce it? What area would they reduce which would thus reduce performance but also not lose customers? Say that they reduced performance for manufacturing budgets, perhaps a higher lithography, lower clock speed & core count, slow bus speeds whatever, say that they have add cards in the past that performed more or less the same, and from other companies for about the same or less. Now imagine what the backlash would be? Imagine the people who would drop out from using that brand. Its not like GPU manufacturers have a ecosystem to latch consumers on, if anything that is quite the contrary. That makes no sense. If I reduced a GPUs performance and justified it for something as bland as that, consumers would get angry. In fact, when has a GPU manufacturer ever done that? I've heard keeping performance relatively the same after newer iterations of a card and even making it more expensive, whatever, but straight up reducing it doesn't make any sense to me.

      @Asoka S Just to provide some precedents to what I said, Nvidia has implemented Voxel Global Illumination technology within their cards, real time ray tracing, physX, hairworks etc... Nvidia has no problem making *free* middleware and performance and/or appearance related upgrades. And guess what the game engines did? They supported 'em. Why? Because it drives in more sales and makes the product look more enticing considering all these fancy features at hand. Implementing this technique depicted in this video is nothing new for the people in the industry, and if it becomes worthwhile, is it really that hard to wrap around in your mind that it probably will be implemented?

    The problem with the premise of this video is that scheduling does not matter for gaming! The reason for this is that games are almost always run in what is called exclusive mode if they are running in full-screen. What this means is that the game has exclusive access to the GPU, implying that no other application is vying for control of the task queue. In other words, it does not matter which application runs its tasks first because there is only one application. Thus, the title is complete click bait. This does matter for productivity use cases, where several application and the hardware accelerated OS shell have access to the GPU, but not for gaming. Take a look at this Microsoft dev-blog for more detail: devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/demystifying-full-screen-optimizations/.

    The annoying thing here is that without the clickable "TeCHnIcaLlY it's true!" title, this video is informative and I learned something but LTT decided to disrespect its audience by implying gains in the tile that are actually a lot more nuanced than "Faster Gaming for FREE in 2 minutes" would lead one to believe. I think most people reasonably expect this title to mean that it should be faster almost entirely across the board and deliver a measurable performance improvement while only taking two minutes to enable... but obviously that's not what the new task scheduler does at the moment, bummer.
    I get that "The new task scheduler currently delivers performance improvements in some productivity use cases" isn't exactly a sexy title and LMG has a business to run with over 30 employees. I respect the hustle with the "clickable" titles but this one really stands out as going over the line in terms of delivering on the promises. If you have to make a statement that the concept is technically "true to the video title" with multiple caveats then the title probably isn't truly representative of the video.
