    We had a weim who all by herself taught herself how to open all doors including the fridge and the sliding glass door, so she could let herself out into the yard. (We had to put a little bolt on the fridge or she would open it and leave it open.) She would also pick up her toys or dropped dog chow off the floor when told to. If we opened a car door she would leap into the car & sit at the drivers seat to be absolutely certain to not be left behind. She would pee on command, so if we were leaving and told her to go pee - she was out the door, and do as she was told. She NEVER left the yard, so she could be left out unattended, though she would chase bunnies or squirrels all around our large yard. If someone is looking for a dog to teach to do tricks - a weim is a great idea. They are so intelligent.

    Oh he is just so adorable!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the covering himself up at bedtime! I miss my 2 so much. And yes, they were spoiled rotten...even down to the hard boiled egg and twinkie EVERY DAY! NEVER, EVER run out of those once you get them started on them. And smart too. You had to figure out ways for them to take the pills/medicine that they needed...because it was like they knew if you would hide them in the middle of the twinkie, or inside a ball of liver sausage.

    I don’t believe that teaching a dog tricks makes them dependent upon you for stimulation. Interacting with your dog is part of the friendship that you share with them. One does not preclude the other. For thousands of years they have interacted closely with their humans, it’s part of the magic, and uniqueness of the dog-human bond.

    • @MorganSebAndAssociates
      @MorganSebAndAssociates  Рік тому

      @@tatianazarta8939 Sorry for the delay of my answer. You have to split the requested behavior into small actions, in dog training this is called "shaping". But, the very first step is to give you a tool, which is the clicker. Look for "clicker training" to learn how to associate the clicker sound with a reward. This will give you a way to reward more precisely with a good timing, it's a crucial part. Once this is done, train the dog to touch the toy with her nose. Each time your dog touch the toy with her nose, click and treat. If your dog does not touch the toy, try to use a treat in your hand as a lure to help her focus on the toy. When you can have a good response with the nose on the toy, now reward the dog taking the toy in her mouth... gradually only reward the toy in the mouth not the nose on the toy anymore. Let me know how it goes with those first steps. Thanks for your interest.

      @MorganSebAndAssociates  5 років тому +2

      Congrat for your new furry friend. Is it a Weim too ? I did trained Morgan myself, after lots of reading and some youtube video of course!
      I'm not an expert, but the only advice I can tell you are the following :
      - Start by get the attention of your dog, if he is watching you, he will try to understand what you asked for, dogs like to please human.
      - Always use positive reinforcement for each behavior you like and ignore any other things. Never punish, it will ruined your relation.
      - Never get mad at him, dog are not mean, if they do something wrong, it's not intentionally. Always trained him with small session of 5-15 min. For better result, do your session before the meal
      - Allow you puppy to burn energy with fetch, running or other locomotion activity.
      - Always finish on a positive action, even if it is a simple "sit".
      - As soon as possible, introduce the clicker training, it will help you to teach faster
      I hope this will help you.

      That is very nice of you to rescue dog, that takes lots of energy too to adapt to each one, you are a "dog" person so you gonna love your weim, those dogs are very special, so much like real human. • @MorganSebAndAssociates
      @MorganSebAndAssociates  6 років тому +10

      Thanks!
      1. The key here is food, you have to find something that your dog really love. As example, for Morgan I use dehydrated sweet potatoes or sausage.
      2. Before any training session, be sure your weim has spent energy with physical exercice, like run or fetch, they will be more focus.
      3. Teach her just before her meal, so she will be more interested in food.
      4. A good start is to teach clicker training first, then with the clicker you can teach sit, down, stay, touch and so on.
      5. Weim are very smart and quick, so they learn very easily, you just have to wait for the behavior you want and click. When teaching tricks, 80% of your time is waiting for the dog to do what you want. Be sure to visualize in your head what you wants and reward your dog each time she is doing what you want and ignore all the other things.
      6. Keep training session short could be 5 min. But you can do 2 ou 3 on the same day to teach 1, 2 ou 3 differents tricks. Dog burn twice the energy when the have to use their brain, so it's help to make them sleep but be sure to not over trained them, you don't want your dog to be bored. Always finish your training before your dog lost interest.
      7. Always break every trick in small actions. As example, to 'turn off the light', there is 4 steps : touch the container with your nose, push the container with your nose, feet on the container then touch the light switch with your nose. Once your dog can do all those things, you can chained them 2 by 2, then 3 then 4.
      I hope this can help you to start, if you have a specific trick you want to learn, just tell me I can give you more details or upload a video tutoial.
      Thanks for watching and for your interest ;-)

      Weim needs exercise, like running of course, but mental stimulation too, like using his nose to find things or learning tricks. Mental stimulation burns more energy because they have to concentrate and think. So, if you do not have enough time, try to focus on that kind of activities, it will be more efficient on you schedule. Weim also need his human friend to keep good social behavior, spending time with him is good for both of you. Give it a try, otherwise another family is a good option, but I understand it's a hard decision for you.
      Good luck my friend.
