Merdoc Avila most people who own BMW's, Audi's etc don't even do anything to their cars apart from add fuel, tyre pressure and washer fluid so it's not really necessary to have a dip stick when a lot of people don't even know what it does. In Europe people use dealerships as they don't rip you off, never work on them themselves unless they are old but our new car market in the UK is huge

Thanks Scotty, you rock! Some more things I would do for a submerged car. First thing disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected until every computer in the car is dry (there and many computers in cars besides the ECU). Water can kill every computer in the car. Drain and refill engine oil, differential/transaxel, transmission, and power steering. Drain the vacuum powered brake booster. I saw a flooded Lincoln hydro lock and destroy the engine from water in the power brake booster getting into the engine. Water cannot be compressed. Next to last like Scotty showed remove every spark plug and crank the engine then change the engine oil and filter.

  • @ryskeroni

Of course insurance companies total flooded cars out, BUT many old cars do not have full coverage. So you do what you can, as in this video. IF you have insurance, let them at it first.

    • @randomvideosn0where
      @randomvideosn0where 7 років тому

Yes it'd be good to run a bit, if you try and buy a replacement right now there is a big risk it was someone else's flooded car just cleaned up.

Scotty: belated thanks for these good tips. It saved my son's 96 Nissan 200SX. Had plenty of water coming out of the spark plug holes. Changed the oil at least 4 times to get the oil-water emulsion out (like mayonnaise). Same for oil filter. Changed the trans fluid at least twice. Replaced spark plugs and dried air intake and changed air filter. Runs great and put 20K miles since that incident 2 years ago. THANKS A LOT!!!! We really appreciate your help.

Just wanted to add to this, disassemble the interior (take out seats, carpet, covers to fuse boxes, etc.). give the electrical components plenty of time to air dry in the sun. Clean all upholstery and interior parts. Chances are some computers like airbags and anything else mounted under the seats would've shorted out, so expect to replace them. Hopefully everyone gets back on their feet and get the help needed asap. Stay safe scotty

  • @jamesgerace841

Scotty, on most modern cars the first thing I would do is disconnect the battery; blow any water out of any wire connectors (I've seen computers shorted because of water in them, including the transmission harness and connectors), I would even go as far as removing the E.C.M. and T.C.M. and opening the case to dry them out. I agree with most of what you said about hydro locking and fluids except you can not judge transmission fluid levels on most cars unless they are running, so I would just drain and fill it. Your video is very informative and if someone has full coverage insurance on an older car they most likely would have just gotten their car totaled and a small check, but in any case I would be sure to at the very least get the insurance adjuster involved because you want to document everything. Flooded cars can be saved but the resale of them is pretty much taboo. If the car was driven into water it might have already hydro locked and caused damage but it is worth a try. I have worked on many over the years that were salvageable. I saw a jeep wrangler once with a dead fish in it after it slid into the lake, it ran great with a little T.L.C. but I think most newer cars with 8 to 18 computers or modules are just going to be totaled and junked.

I had a flooded motorcycle years ago. Spark plug removal is key, empty the gas tank and any sediment, clean the intake, the injectors and also change the oil immediately then also change it again after 50 miles, then 100, then 100 and see that it comes out clean.

I have a 1969 Camaro Z/28 we bought in 1970. In 1974, one year before I was born, it was stolen and involved in a high speed chase. When it overheated and blew the radiator hose the thief ditched it in a water trap in a golf course and actually got away. The car was up to the bottom of the dash in water overnight and the police towed it and left it outside. Water leeched into the engine causing 5 cracks in the engine block when it froze hard that night. I still have the car, but we never had the money to REALLY do it proper, we fixed the block as best we could (elaborate process of drilling holes, tapping, bolting, then welding with a wash/rinse/repeat overlapping each fix) but we couldn't ever get the wiring right, and a new wiring harness has been out of reach financially. The fuse box is the biggest issue, there must be a lot of corrosion under it where it meets the firewall because you can wiggle things and see it dim and flicker or cut out.
Doesn't help that I tried wiring in a bunch of stuff when I was in high school and didn't know what the hell I was doing...

ECU's are usually located low in a foot well and kick panel area, that and fuses boxes would be first inspection. If a vehicle is submerged, a lot of electrical connectors along the body and interior fill with water too. I've seen taillights and head lights full of water too. Just driving in deep water for any substantial amount of time requires replacing differential and transmission fluids.

First thing to do: DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AS SOON AS YOU CAN, this mean while still sitting in the water. Water + electricity = extreme corrosion. So the sooner you remove power, the quicker you stop the damage. Ideally, car flood, get out, open hood, disconnect battery, call a towing.
Then once out of the water, if it was salt water: rince everything before it dry! Every connection, connectors, salt = bad.
    Let dry.
Now you can attempt what scotty said.

Had to do this to my mower and generator, but saved them. My dad's 04 Prius got water in the interior, and for some reason it won't die. We replaced the 12v battery that died, stripped the carpet, and cleaned and packed the connectors inside with dielectric grease. There's lights on the dash that shouldn't be on (but no codes for the engine or hybrid drive system), the nav and audio system don't work because those modules were on the floor, but it still starts and goes.

Tip: know where your air intake vent is before driving through water, if its in the wheel well do not drive through the water. If its right in the by the radiator as you open the hood I suggest you dont drive through water higher than the underneath of your bumper, in many cases if air gets sucked in it will overfill the oil soak the air filter and hydro lock, this could bend the valves as water doesnt compresss and ruin the engine

Gotta love Scotty's dedication. He went to houston, picked himself up a nice flooded car just so he could make this video.

If only you can check fluid level on a sealed transmission. Which most modern cars are like that. Good to see you're doing good after the flood.

Disconect the batttery as soon as you can and try to locate the control modules and try to dry them or at least sumerge them in isopropilic alcohol and then wait a couple of days. Alcohol will displace the water and clean everything and stop most of the rust.
Some control modules are sealed but others not. Even if the car starts fine, will stop working after a while because the circuit boards start to degrade because corrosion. Specially the ones that are enclose in metal shieldings of have metal shields inside. Not ans easy job but avoid intermitent or sudden failures when you most need the car.

Since the flooding in houston Another thing to note is do not buy any cars from craigslist that's near houston it might be water damaged and people might scam you.
