    George Jamesone 1587-1644 was regarded as one of Scotlands first eminent portrait painters. He rose to prominence in 1633 when Charles I visited Edinburgh and he was asked to paint his portrait and the King was so pleased with the result he is said to have rewarded him with a ring off his own finger.

    Greetings from Nevada, USA. I could help giggling through your video for all of the sirens! "Give yourself up man! They've found you!" On the other hand, I'm pleased that you mentioned the Canongate area. I traced an ancestor who lived at "1 Canongate" in the late Victorian era. She also moved around to Blackfriars and the Tron church. (She was a seamstress, but perhaps not very lucrative) I would love to come and do my research there.

    Wow. Great information. Thank you. I just read the Wiki on the murder of Capt. Porteous while he was held in Tolbooth. Crazy riots and history. Great story to tell.

    Such familiar sites for me... I was able to guess in advance all but one of the buildings you highlighted. I will be returning for a month around Samhain 2023 and very much looking forward to setting my feet to the cobbles of my adopted second home!

      Edinburgh is very windy it’s not called the windy city for nothing so hard when up high to not have wind. One of the worst places is actually the Waverley Station main stairs. Locals usually go out a different way. One heard a police man say to struggling tourists. Come away yah silly buggers have you never seen the wind afore.

    7:40 - Not quite correct about the cathedral thing there - it's a cathedral because it's the location of the bishop's *seat*, not the bishop ('cathedral' coming from the Latin for said throne or whatever). It woud be a bit odd if the building kept being or not being a cathedral just because the bishop was or wasn't around, as then Edinburgh would alternately be or not be a city. ;D

      Ah ok. Cool, thanks. Thats good to know, love learning new things. I think Edinburgh would be safe as a city as it has 3 cathedrals I think.

      Indeed;
      St. Gile's Cathedral
      (Church of Scotland)
      (no bishop since 1689, and has therefore lost its cathedral status)
      The Cathedral Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, aka St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral (Scottish Episcopal Church)
      (tallest building in Edinburgh, and one of only three in the UK to have three spires! It has had a Provost (equivalent to a bishop) since 1879)
      The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, aka St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral
      (Roman Catholic Church)
      (seat of the Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh)
      So, there are officially two cathedral's in Edinburgh. Ironically, the 'High Kirk' of Edinburgh is the only one that isn't one!

    Do they still have those 14 story buildings that everyone kept throwing poo from whilst yelling "gallyhoo"? Show us those please (time stamp??? If I didn't notice it...). They're supposed to be the first skyscrapers.
