gilbertdaroy6080: The powers that be in Hollywood didn't think she would be able to transition to Talkies from Silent film because of her accent. She proved them wrong.
Marie broke me up saying "Oh, no I was thinking of something else." I think GG was tickled too. And what about Garbo's line: "They sure are fussy in this dump." " Give me a whiskey, ginger ale on the side and don't be stingy baby." LOVE IT.
Aint they fussy in these dump..I think she was going to say these dumps, then shortened it to dump..Anyway it was funny, made me laugh, and Larry's line "shall I serve it in a pale" was great..Just a great scene
Most people don’t know that the line “I ain’t MAD atcha” was said by Marie Dressler, in the 1930 film “Min and Bill.” Please watch, then re-watch “The MGM Story” documentary!
sorry to be so off topic but does any of you know a tool to get back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot my account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me
People of that time should be surprised when they listen Greta Garbo talking for the first time "Gimme a whisky, ginger ale on the side, and don't be stingy, baby!"
@@MidnightTales Yes, you're correct, Salka starred in the German version w/Garbo. Many critics felt that it was the better, more realistic treatment of the script compared to the English version.
She was only 25 here: what a fascinating woman she was!
She was an "old soul". Ahead of her time, beyond her years
She tried her best but that SWEDISH ACCENT is just too much.

The audience didn't mind

I love Marie Dressler. She played a society matron just as effectively in "Dinner at Eight" with Jean Harlow.
No wonder Garbo was called "The Divine." Even today, she is peerless.
“And don’t be stingy, baby!”
Marie Dressler is doing some outrageously good acting between sitting down and drinking, my god.
The Shirley Booth of her time: could make magic out of plain life
I agree but she's a veteran waay up in the stratosphere. I mean she made Garbo look like a a talented schoolgìrl but school girl nonetheless.
She’s a big part of why this is so rewatchable for me, her humor and pathos

Hey, what are you laughing at? Me?
Two years and no dislikes. People have good taste.
Nah. People are like birds. They are bird brained. They follow the flock.
Dislikes are no longer public

Story has it than Marilyn played this part in acting class better than anyone saw it before ✨ she was sooo amazing ✨🧡
The first words Greta Garbo ever spoke on screen. I wonder how many people were surprised by her accent.
@Adonis Castro Where did you hear THAT one?
@@retroguy9494 Peter Hay’s 1991 book MGM: When the Lion Roars for instance. But it was widely reported back then.
@@martin3203 Thanks. I'll have to check it out. I never heard her English became so well she basically lost her heavy accent.
Funny how long it takes Marie Dressler to walk the few feet between her table and Garbo's.
She first powder her nose...
I was thinking that! Thanks for the name. I was going to look her up.

...she said: skoal!!! cheers
Garbo said: SKÅL! (Cheers in Swedish)

The divine Greta Garbo. Loved her. IMO she was the most beautiful actress of her time.
I don't know why but I love this scene.
Garbo is very good here.
Marie Dressler is the queen.
Is the German version available ?
It has been uploaded now by MovieHeritage
salka viertel is the other woman and they were lifelong friends
NO, IT IS NOT. It is Canadian born actress, Marie Dressler. She won the Best Actress Award the next year.
@@Themanwhocameback2 thanx for the correction, i was fooled by a slight resemblance and actually her accent is not all european
