Dr. Haidt: we are overly tribal and need to move beyond that kind of thinking.
Christian lady: I agree with Dr. Haidt, except the god of my tribe is best and we all need to follow him and his ways.

Our tribal nature is hardwired into our brains. We are not blank slates that can pick and choose this kind of behavior. it is like saying: "We don't need an appendix anymore, we need to move beyond having them."

@@geoffreyscott785 while this is very true, certain groups tend to be far more tribal than others- religious groups among the top. Thus, the irony of her statement.

And I meant this is a conversation between academics. My request to Mrs. Gillespie: Please leave the gospels at home.

I was really interested to hear Gillespie's perspective. Maybe there's something valuable to learn about human beings captured in religious teachings that's hard to get at through rigorous academia, which is why they've made successful memes?
Haidt's whole point is that we should listen to people that don't share, and won't support, our own worldview. Sure, god doesn't exist. But let's learn more about the world by listening to really intelligent people who think differently - Gillespie can't make her point without the gospels, and I want to hear what she's got to say.

Since when has someone’s faith became a disqualification for the academic scientist? It is the belief in God that drove the rise of science-for us to have the discourse to begin with.

@@OscarMendez-pn8yp Since around 1700. The purpose of the French Enlightenment was to use rational thinking to overcome all structures that hindered progress, such as religion and superstition. Laicism later arose from this revolutionary movement. The principle calls for a strict separation between religion and state. Thanks to this principle, the influence of religion was banned from all state institutions (including schools and universities) and restricted to the private sphere. This basic academic principle still applies in the western world.
Thank God? The Enlightenment and the associated rapid development of science are by no means due to religion, but to the limitations of it.
So, "Why are we so stupidly divided and how can we heal?" These questions are best answered when we base our arguments on knowledge and facts, rather than on belief.
