As the previous commenter said, best tutorial ivé seen. 2 hours of googling and stuff was all explained in 10 minutes here. Thanks a bunch! Greatings from Sweden! =)
Cool video. I liked the part where your remove electrons and put them back with your fingers to stop/start the motor. Thank you very much for sharing this video.
Dorian. Could you provide me a some parts as an example for using as a practice in the school? I just want to make sure to understadn this subject as much as I need for my students. Thanks in advance and happy new year!
Hi. this video is great, but if you don't mind could you tell me why the dual igbt has four wires on each gate when you only need one (red) wire for G1 and one for G2?
+Kenny Dominguez Not really sure but why but since they are using a wide connector it may be they are providing a lower impedance path to the Gate using two wires instead of one. This would allow the gate to turned on faster when necessary.
So what exactly is the major difference in a traditional power mosfet and an IGBT? Is it the very small gate threshhold to gate saturation size(hard switching)? Is it just a separate but similar technology to mosfets designed for hard switching? Does it handle inductive voltage spikes differently?
+Richard Smith IGBTs are basically devices with a MOSFET front end and a BJT back end. They have the high input impedance of a MOSFET with the low saturation voltage of a BJT. They are designed primarily for high voltage, high current switching.
Thanks for yous primorous explanations, could you please tell me if is possible use 3 toshiba (MG75M2CK1) as a SSR relay, on 48dc water 1500w heater element. If yes, how to wire them. Thank you in advance.Natanael.
quick glance at the datasheet tells me that your toshiba transistors would probably work, but never use a SSR ( solid state relay) with dc. as for wiring you'll need to look at what you're driving it with and the pinout on the datasheet. Would need more info on what you're doing to give you more info.
I removed this IGBT from a variable-frequency motor drive unit. They are normally very expensive but you can usually find a good deal on Ebay Ebay www.ebay.com/itm/1-pc-PRX-IGBT-Module-CM150DU-12F-150A-600V-/181110639712?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a2b090c60 Hope you get a chance to play with one.
This device is very used to control high power Induction machines. They can handle high current and voltages levels!. It is mostly used in the automotive industry. Question, what is the part number of the IGBT with two devices that you are showing here? Do you have another demo with AC motors? Best Regards!
IGBT are also used almost exclusively in current variable frequency drives for AC motors in industry. The part number for the device used in the video is CM900DU-24NF. This is a 900 Amp, 1200 volt IGBT pulled from a 600 volt VFD. This IGBT is capable of controlling over a million watts of power!!!
I recommend you study the information at the following link: www.pantechsolutions.net/powerelectronics-tutorials/introduction-of-igbt-based-single-phase-pwm-inverter
Sir, Great Job. My question is 1:What is the value of Battery i.e. battery voltage. 2:Is the motor used over here is Induction motor ie AC motor????? 3:Can i use this test as a test setup to check whether IGBT is working properly or not???
1. The battery voltage used is 12 volts but the device is capable of much higher voltages (1000 volts). 2. In this video I'm just using the IGBT to turn a DC motor on and off although IGBT are extensively used to create Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for 3 Phase AC motors. 3. The video was intended to demonstrate the sensitivity and operation of the device but also a method of testing such devices. This same method can also be used to test a MOSFET. Thanks for commenting
Dorian McIntire in the Air Condicioner inverter HVAC system`s they have the complex IGBT module.... Thanks for explanation how does the work this device..

Excellent and extremely easy to follow description on what an IGBT is and how it works.... Clearly, concisely explained!!
Thanks for your inspiring comment.

Sergio Mayorga Do you mean provide a list of possible part numbers to use in your own demonstrations? Thanks for commenting.
Nice video description and good voice..👍
great video. huge help for my classes
Great, I'm really glad you found it useful.
Very simple and excellent tips
Excellent sir thank you 🙏

Very helpful demo. Thanks. Subscribed to your channel.
can that IGBT pack power a 5mm LED? (i mean just by leakage current LOL)

sir,can i use 6volts instead of 12volts as gate voltage.
6 volts may work ,depending on the IGBT threshold voltage for your IGBT, but these voltages typically run higher for IGBTs than they do for MOSFETS.
Honestly it's awesome, if I want to use a bulb in place of the motor, what type of bulb ac or dc? Thanks
DC for testing

13apr 1992 !!! the battery is so old how is it working???
I don't know but I still use it. The battery was pulled from an emergency lighting system during a periodic routine replacement.

Can you please let me know that does this method work , if we use a lamp instead of a rotating motor???
+NISARGH S Yes, any type of load is fine whether its a lamp, motor or high power resistor. I just happened to have a motor handy.
+Dorian McIntire thank you soo much.. awesome video...
Nice video
Can i use 12vdc, and 100Amp motor like this testing of igbt??? In 300Amp IGBT module.
Yes, assuming you have a good 100 amp power supply that does not drop significantly when driving the motor.
How to make igbt driver??
Then i know the performance of igbt in fast switching..
@@DorianMcIntire dear i have a task for making a igbt test bench on load.. kindly help me.

Dorian McIntire Thanks for sharing dis video and your kind reply.
I have got vfd's on our industry, but never failed the igbts. Thanks for the demonstration.
So great
nice video but tel me this motor AC OR DC
This video used DC but IGBT's are typically used to control AC motors.
Thanks it useful.

Actually it is rated for 50 A 600 V. That's why it' 50N60. Most devices that I have run into follow this rating convention.
Thanks. I know the convention but misspoke. I was looking at several IGBTs to use before the video and didn't say what I meant to say.
Dorian McIntire That's cool.
Excellent sir thank you 🙏
