hello I love my cute XK1C I do not use the midi jacks it works in church service just gorgeous sound I love it. Luis frometa jr from NYC. Proud HAMMOND endorser.
I think you are very spot on. There is a “digital” feel to the SK1. Even in this vid, the XK sounds more “organic”. Ive used both in live backline situations, through Leslies and sims. It always feels as if an XK1C plays more like an A,B or C and I think is strictly because of the sound- and Phatness is not something for which you can compensate. Something went incredibly right with that advanced XK system. If guy/ woman is using a main controller for pianos, a weighted keyboard or something etc, (I just switched to the Korg SV2) I can’t see how a player would take the SK over the XK - it’s, of course, all subjective and your mileage certainly may differ. This video is great proof of the sound differences, if all things are equal.
Different reverb settings when you use reverb. At 1.27 no rev on the SK1 but some on the XK, at the beginning a short reverb (more intimate sound) on the XK and a long lush one on the SK, only around 2 mins were they similar. Though I would still say the SK1 has a hollower sound but interesting that at 3 mins when no reverb is used they sound similar but with the nod going to the XK with its seemingly fuller sound
Bingo. I feel the difference in sounds from either organ is the channel settings also. They both sound good, I believe at this point, it just depends on how you set up the channel and what amplifier/speaker combination you are using, all of which is changeable to your own style and preferences. Bravo Hammond on your continued development of your organ. Overall, and nice presentation of the two models. Thank you for making this video for the masses.
I've owned both and the SK1 is my personal choice. For one thing, I own the 73 note version of the SK1 and the XK1 doesn't come with anything other than the 61 note basic version (those "extra" 12 notes are an absolute must for me to have). Secondly, I have found my SK1 to be gutsier and with more "thickness" than the XK1c in the higher octaves.
+MotownRockinroller Makes no sense - it is the same engine - just need to tweak out the settings on the XK1C. For me the XK1C has a better Fatar Keybed. They are both based upon the same model - I think a TP80 but it has clearly been tweaked for the better - actually feels similar to my 1954 B2 and played thru a 122 thru my Speakeasy Vintage Tube Preamp - sounds identical.
+Michael Gallagher Like I said: There's no option for more keys in the XK series, whereas with the SK1 you can get up to 88. In addition, many of us gigging musicians like to split the keyboard--piano or bass in the left area and organ in the higher end--and the XK series doesn't deliver in that regard. The only thing the Xk shares with the SK is the organ. The SK is much more than that. Plus you can pick up a used SK1-73 for nearly the cost of a new XK-1 these days, resulting in more playable notes and a whole entire set of additional sounds to split or solo with.
I loaded the "BEST OF THE Xk-1c" setup into my SK1 and it made a huge difference. The Vintage147 and Vintage122 Leslie sims are better than any of the SK1 Leslie sims. No need for an external sim now.
I have the XK1 and had the SK1 here and spent a week comparing them. I tried to match them identically but no matter what setting I used, the SK1 sounded more digital than the XK1. I was still getting the same difference in sound as this video demonstrates even when all parameters were matched identically.
Why so many differences? Were updates done on the SK1? Awaiting the arrival of both of these Hammonds, due to some interesting eBay events. Thinking of combining them into a 2 manual "Fanken-Organ, for considerably less investment than the Sk2. So much potential...
Hi. I was wondering if you had a preference when playing them both. I'm thinking about the Xk1c due to the lower price but don't want to sacrifice sonic quality. Thank you.
Rick Wakeman has a new SK1 (using it on the ARW tour) and he seems to hate it....probably purchased in a hurry for the tour. I've watched him curse the thing and look like he wants to throw it across the stage (as he did once with a Mellotron). I would have recommended the xk1. It handles well on stage and easy to find your settings. Plus the sound is much closer to a true Hammond sound
Scott Arnold I could see him throwing the Mellotron off the stage.John Paul Jones too, reported the mellotron as being very problematic when he was touring with Zeppelin.I wonder what Rick W didn’t like about the Sk1? His critique of it would carry a lot of weight I would think.
Memories of my Mellotron falling out of the back of the van back in ‘75. Tapes everywhere in a freezing Iowa winter on I-80 just east of Des Moines. We stopped long enough to secure the door. The instrument had caused so many problems, that I didn’t feel bad. I do now, however. $$
Nice very nice , what kind of amp would you recommend? I wouldn't need the hole set up like the Hammond Leslie speaker cabinet to get close to what I'm hearing..please advise
The Hammond xk-1c is the better Instrument, because it has a better design and smaller Price. So if you want to be authentic, The Hammond xk-1 is the better Instrument. The Hammond SK1 is like a Stage Piano with Drawbars. the sound of this is the battle Hammond Organ sound than the sound of Hammond clones or stage Pianos from other brands, because this instruments are made from Hammond. If you want Stage Piano or Grand piano sounds, you can use a real Stage Piano like the Korg SV-1.
That holds true 6 years later! Although the SK Pros are a new ballgame (and price point). I just ordered a new XK1c today. I wish I could figure out a way to just balance it on top of my SV-2.
Sk2 sounds more digital, clean sound in high, even in staccato, thats a lac of life. The Xk2 sounds 'worser' (soul), exact what a model like A serie or B serie does. The mechanical wheel in those types makes the sound each time difference and not that magarine high as a Sk2
I don't know....disappointing.....both sound shallow and powerless. Full organ setting (888888888) clearly reveals the whole problem: while it supposed to sound big, deep, rich, punchy and powerful, both models sound thin and squeeky like some sort of a transistors organ....c'mon Hammond....seriously?? is this the best you can do??
disappointing to hear both these instruments; neither is played in a fully bold glissando manner as we play blues, ballads ,gospel & *Bob Segar*; interesting video though, thanks for posting...
+Arecio Smith I have had both side by side. Very similar, but HS had the keybed slightly modified on the XK1C. It feels more authentic than the SK1. I am waiting for Hammond to come out with a Duo Manual board with two sets of drawbars based upon the XK1C. That would be great. I do not need the extra sounds on the SK1 and 2. I just want a light weight killer organ with the 8 pin output to plug into my Leslie 3300. Sorry Crumar Mojo - yours is missing that and side by side just does not sound as good as the XK1C. Oh, the XK1C is far better than the flagship XK3C. Time to lighten that one up for sure.
They sure don't sound identical, Hammond won't make two keyboards that do exactly the same! Both are for a different purpose, and both offer excellent sounds. XK1 is an organ, SK1 has more sounds.
Great video thanks! How MUCH better is SK Pro than SK1 (I know it's better, but SK Pro=$3600, SK1=$2200)

Hi i have one question beacuse i am gonna buy one. Does xk1c has trensposse button?
I put m headphones on and this video shows a stark contrast favoring the XK in tone, especially in the higher registers.
The XK1c has a much more richer sound and a deeper bass and tone is more relaxing than the SK1.

The SK-1 sounds thinner but more precise. But both sound fantastic.

So you're saying the XK1 has a more natural sound? I've been thinking about getting the xk1
I feel XK has a more rich voice. It sounds better.
No, it's just that SK1 had a different EQ setting. IT can easily be made to sound exactly like XK.
Yep, also more staccato click
Why so many differences?

different settings?
(leslie, overdrive, leakage, eq, ecc.)
they should have same sound engine, it's strange that they sound so different....
:-)
*****
Really strange such a big difference! maybe due to different digital tonewheel sets
At 2.34 is the most obvious difference between the two audio settings of both
+José Miguel Rodríguez Marchena It is the same engine - there must be a few settings that are not identical to the XK1C.
@@lawrencemichael9263 sounds like one has more drive/distortion than the SK1
It isn’t the same sound engine. The Xk1c has the newer sound engine
thanks for making this video, the sk1 is good but the xk-1c kicks ass, much better, lol. It has a bigger punch in its sound, more clear and powerful.
Jimmy Figueras the sk1 needs to be eq'd. It's a monster, trust me
Just for using hammond, what would be better to buy? Sk1 or xk 1c?
Sk1 sounds warmer by far

I’m pretty sure Rick could afford the XK4.
This guy has seen the inside of a church before
ordered my xk1c today. the other voices on the sk1 are so sad!
XK1c is the clear choice. Closest to B3 sound.
I had an XK1, then changed to SK1 for the weight.
I always think that XK1 sounded better than SK1...
Nice very nice , what kind of amp would you recommend? I wouldn't need the hole set up like the Hammond Leslie speaker cabinet to get close to what I'm hearing..please advise
equal sounds, differences only on equalization to verify.
leakage is clearly different too
Does hammond xk1c has transposse button or option?
Yes it can transpose😊
Both great only colour is diferent...
Are you sending your output to identical equipment, hardware, settings?
yes. Mackie ONYX 820i.

The SK1 just sounds a little louder.
It seems leakage and EQ settings are different. A fair comparison would have to try to match them soundwise before testing.

What is the main differences between the Sk and Xk series?
Matthew Zaragoza sk series has other digital voices such as pianos and strings. XX series is more organ focused and has no other sounds

may I suggest a hearing aid?
They use the same organ and Leslie engine. Should of been no difference except in volume and maybe EQ
