Hook: #6-12 terrestrial
Thread: Brown
Body: Tan 2mm foam
Rib: Brown dry fly hackle
Underbody: brown dubbing
Wing: Elk hair

Wow, $90 for a book was expensive back in the late 90s, but it wasn't prohibitively so. I've been seeing it on Amazon and Ebay recently in the $500 price range.

I have been using this pattern for 20 or more years. Better than the Sofa pillow for supporting heavy weighted nymphs. Still use both patterns. Also, add short loops of 20 # mono to allow adjusting the length of the dropper tippet with cutting / replacing tippet. This method is as done in Mikie Weir's Hoppicator fly.

This clodhopper is a wonderful looking fly for bigger fish in my opinion and will work with a dropper. Looks like I'll have to get my 7wt out with a weight forward floating line.

Oh yeah Denny. This in tan or a light green looks like our naturals here. But I do a similar one in pink and purple and it's crazy how those things do so well some days!

Thanks Matt. Looks like a good hopper pattern. I tied some of those bullet head hoppers that you did in March. They came out good and it gave me a chance to use those Griffin bullet head tools that I bought decades ago!

@@SavageFlies Yes Matt. The Griffin tools came in a pack of three sizes and look and work like those Renzetti tools. The Griffins were cheaper no doubt. The outer rings appears to be black Delrin and the centers are black rubber. They work well for me because my hands are fairly large!

Another nice fly Matt. The only thing I can think to try is maybe tying knots in the back leg but who knows if the fish even notice. Keep the good stuff coming.
I've wondered the same thing about knotting the back legs. I do it often enough to get that little bend, but yeah, I'm wondering if it makes a difference to the fish. Probably not. :-)
Now that my trout season is over until fall, time to start filling up the bass box, I figure a half dozen or so of these won't look too out of place. Heck I might just fill a box, I picked up a couple in the smokies after all!
Funny you mention that David, I just started a bass fly box last year. I usually keep a small terrestrial box with all my trout boxes, but big hoppers take up a lot of space! Now I've got separate streamer boxes, terrestrial boxes, and what I used to call my "warmwater box" and of course a dozen or more regular trout boxes. Oh man, I need to get more organized!
Foam bodied terrestrials are always a fun tie for me. I have some sisal rope that I have wanted to try out and am going to see how the fibers work for the wing on this one. Figure it's worth a try. As always, thanks for another interesting fly and the history behind it!
That's a great idea Troy. I think a sisal rope is similar enough to a burlap - and could make a cool looking wing. Or at least a buggy body. :-)
One of the books I recently picked up. No promises but prices have dropped during the warm season in the past when less tying occurs and looking thru supply wouldnt be surprised to see that happen this year.

I think the foam body on this thing could be used for a caddis fly. Might be a great hopper for a dropper.
Oh yeah Andrew. I think you could cut the foam smaller and put this on a smaller hook and it would make a fine caddis!
I bet you could drop the size and switch to black foam and hackle, then swap out the elk for dark moose hair for a nice cricket pattern too... 😀
That's actually a great idea Randy! I'm going to try this, but I wouldn't have to shrink it too much as our crickets here are almost as big as the grasshoppers.

Oh my, I haven’t heard “clod hopper”since when I moved to Kansas. When I heard the term & asked about it, I got the same definitions. This fly doesn’t look cloddish so I’m not sure the designer picked the right spelling to honor his friend, Claude. It looks effective.
Yep, and I was curious as to why he spelled it with a K. His friend wasn't Klaude!
Easy to tie..love hoppers..I’m in! Call me Clod. Thanks Matt!👍👍 I’m gonna use your suggestion and tie a midge dropper to my bigger hoppers..I’ll let you know what happens. I was bringing in a big perch yesterday on #12 llano bug with 3wt and a 5lb bass came up and swallowed it. Had a great fight for a minute or so but she finally spit the perch out. Also lost a 6-7lb on 8wt using #4 hook with black leech pattern the day before. Going back with big 1/0 flys to hopefully land one of these girls!😅 I’ll keep you posted. Have a great one my friend! 🎣
Holy cow Charlie; that's a great story! I've heard of this happening and have had big fish chase the little fish I've had on the line, but never had one eat the little guy. And losing that 6-7 pounder? That's a heart breaker! Definitely keep me posted. I'd love to see a picture of a 5+ pound bass caught on a fly rod!
