Ashley I was walking in my little city square and I thought my AirPods were connected when I went to start the episode but instead you called out “Hello Bottoms!” from my phone at full volume with someone standing like five feet away from me 💀😂🤦🏻
I'm 100% with Maddie. I think people were already annoyed with women who look like Barbie being somehow the face of feminism (like, we've started acting like women are somehow discouraged from looking like that, whch is. wild), and now people try making Taylor Swift the face of queerness even though she does *nothing* to participate in queerness and has stated multiple times she is straight. People saying Lily Gladstone, an actual indigenous person, robbed Margot Robbie of an Oscar nomination? That's not feminism imo.
Regarding the Barbie movie, I agree with all 3 of you 😄 I am glad the movie was made & that it was sucessful and I had a fun time watching it. At the same time, I expected more in the direction that Maddie mentioned: There were plot holes/metaphors not translating well and I didn't like that the end kinda put a focus on genitalia.
This felt like being a quiet one in the corner at a party with really funny and sincere people and listening in. This episode made me so fuzzy and warm on the inside. Love ya!
Ali saying "I was doing an impression of sex and now I kinda found my voice" is so relateable!! I feel like I really learned sex in the last couple years (I'm in my 30s), too.
I am sitting at the airport just cracking up laughing. I have people just looking at me. Thanks for making the time fly by, pardon the pun, and for this hilarious episode.
21:16 - For some reason I always use the matrix trilogy when Ali's kind of question about why get out of bed; For me I think back to when Smith at the end of revolutions questions Neo "Why Mr. Anderson, WHY WHY do you persist?" and Neo responds simply with "Because I choose to"
bro being a useless sapphic because of the fear of being inappropriate and making girls uncomfortable is such a relatable situation for me. Most of my friends are straight, or some of them may just not be out, and when I'm around those people I just feel like I have to be very careful not to make girls think I'm interested in them. I avoid any kind of flirting even if it's just a joke, while boys have no problem doing that (and it doesn't mean anything, it's just for fun). Idk if I feel this way because these girls would actually be bothered or if it's just all in my head. I'm italian btw, sorry if the grammar's not perfect lol
Thank you Maddie for talking about the Barbie movie, I’m tired of people telling me that I didn’t understand it or that I’m not a feminist cause I didn’t like it.
On Barbie movie: I think both sides have a point. Yes, it it is digestible feminism for the masses, however, I understand Maddie's disappointment - when you keep hearing how the movie is life-changing, thought-provoking etc etc, it raises expectations and you can end up feeling like you are the only one seeing that the movie is actually not that deep or progressive as people say it is. But i guess it all depends on your own "level" of knowledge in this topics in relation to how much the movie can impress you.
Seeing someone so strongly dislike the Barbie movie was really cathartic for me 😂 I haven't seen it and don't care to, but it annoyed me to no end how no one would talk about anything else for the first few weeks it was out. A lot of what Maddie said highlights a problem I have with many blockbuster movies lately, which is that they care more about being an Event™ than actually telling a good story.
IKR. Ash cutting her off with an annoying Jeopardy clock noise was just rude. She got her points out, why couldn't Maddy? (Just some constructive criticism.. Dont come for me Ashley 🤭.. I know ur sensitive to comments lately)
WAIT maddie-I have something to say about the fear of making the first move with women. You said if you were to do something to a woman that a man did to you, it made you think, “well how did they do that to me”…well maybe when they did those more dominant things to you it felt like it was crossing a personal boundary of yours. Like you weren’t speaking up for yourself and kinda just let it happen to you. So you’re afraid of behaving like a man with a woman-but the thing is, those men weren’t respectful to you in the first place if they made you feel like that (or perhaps you weren’t that into it…) I felt the exact same thing with the first few women I slept with post-abusive relationship with a man. Because he pushed the boundaries of my body and autonomy, I had internalized the notion of expressing desire and passion towards women as a negative thing. So when I felt that pull towards another woman sexually, my brain went to those scenarios where I didn’t say no, but I also didn’t say yes with a man. And that led me down a rabbit hole of fear of treating HER the same way men have treated ME in the past, regardless of all the clear signs that she enthusiastically wanted to be in bed next to me. Just some food for thought and self-reflection 🥰
Ali in full sincerity with a British accent: " I just want to talk about this in a way this person can understand'' 😂🤣😂🤣 (also loved all the Taylor swift, Barbie, and Billie talk btw.)
Love you Maddie, but I have to disagree on the Barbie take! Although I totally agree that it’s not representative of all of feminism and certainly has imperfections and plot holes, it was still a very important movie. It had a much broader reach as it is than if it had gone in much harder. My conservative mom watched it with my liberal sisters and I and she has since had more questions regarding feminism and what it “really means.” Frankly these conversations would not be happening without that type of media, so I’m extremely grateful it exists. Also let’s not put down all of the amazing women behind the movie! They all did a great job.
Phenomenal episode! The fear for me has always been that I’ve heard all those things in real life by the people around me and I’m a sensitive bi/lesbian so hearing those stereotypes from people I respected really got to me as a teen/young adult
CRAP I miss all the good stuff!Did I get a notification???Nooooo!Let me check my finances-i am sure I can fork out a few days duckets for the cause! We love you all in the bay area!❤❤❤
As a fellow bisexual maddie, i just find women more intimidating because i cant fool them like i do men since i feel like they can read me better since were both women so theyll be like oh i see what ur doing. Whereas men are so much easier to pull one over on, and you dont really feel bad about it. I feel like somehow some girls gonna know if i looked her up or found her zillow. 😂
As someone who the community came together to call me crazy because my dad had PTSD and later took his life- you can say crazy ❤😂 I say crazy still 😂 but I don’t do it to purposefully hurt and degrade someone just when I’m explaining something and it’s a good adjective - words aren’t the problem, people are 😂😂😂
This was definitely fun. Also I get the feeling Maddie was not a fan of the Lego movie. I went in expecting a commercial with a few good jokes but I absolutely loved it. Seems like perhaps Maddie had the opposite with Barbie, high expectations and felt like she got a commercial.
tbf, the Lego movie was hilarious xD I am still to this day shouting "First try!" whenever someone does something absolutely mundane but kindy in the spotlight 😁
Amazing gay thought, very relatable issue Maddie. What makes us useless imo is a combination of 1. womanhood (women shouldn't pursue) 2. growing up with queer desires in a heteronormative world, back in our day (90s and 00s) with NO representation AND ferling these desires are "wrong" and "nobody can know this" 3. experiencing MEN pushing our boundaries.
I love that you touched on the Taylor swift stuff. I would love to hear your take on the bigger shift I’ve seen in culture surrounding all that where it seems like younger people (mostly Gen Z, but some millennials too) seem to think that “speculation” is immoral and put it on the same level as outing someone. Whereas to me, outing is when you KNOW some private information and you tell people about that. For so long, it was absolutely vital in the queer community to “speculate” - and flagging has always been so intentional! But it seems like when you explain to them that the only safe way to “come out” sometimes is to flag queerness to the ones that get it, it just gets villainized now to pick up on those flags. It’s almost like in trying to be so pc, they’re actually being homophobic and telling us the way our community has always operated is invasive and wrong. Or they can’t see the difference in bullies calling someone gay to harass them and a community seeing members of their own community and embracing them. I’m just curious about your thoughts and would love to hear a discussion on the podcast - I know you mentioned, Ashley, on the the chosen family podcast that you assume everyone is gay and love to talk about it so I think we might be on the same page here but we are around the same age. Part of me is glad that some of the younger generation can’t conceptualize homophobia and why flagging would be necessary because it means we have come a long way, but I also worry that it’s making them blind to how far we have left to go. And they’re so confident in calling people out about it, I worry we might be going backwards in some ways. If it were just straight behavior it would be one thing, but it’s a lot of the young gays too.
The take on queer baiting is incredible 👏👏👏👏major props to you guys. I hate when people try to say an actual person is queer baiting (because they might just not be comfortable or safe coming out right now) I think it’s normal to speculate queer baiting when a character in a show is being portrayed that way and then they never act on it or confirm. Just trying to raise the views from queer people. But any actual person should have the right to come out when/if they feel comfortable. I think people so easily confuse celebrities with characters because they don’t feel “tangible” they’re not In our personal life. It’s like when you see an actor and don’t know their name but know what character they played In your favorite movie. I think it happens all too much with celebrities (especially younger ones because of how open gen Z is becoming, which is a positive but can be aggressive.) and it makes sense with Taylor because she wore the bi flag on her head in wig form. But she still has the right to be in the closet if thats where she’s comfortable. And I don’t know if the masses realize how much it could affect even a celebrity’s mental health to be publicly outted.
It's also just not an actual strategy. Gay people and characters do not outperform straight ones. It could be a diversity calling card but the reality is it's just not a good strategy for increasing engagement or views. Additionally, even if they are "queer baiting" isnt representation what we want? And allyship? I duno just feels like having your cake and eating it too sometimes.
@@ashgavs absolutely👏 i appreciate y’all’s take so much. I feel like when people talk about queer baiting it’s only a blame game/ or shitting on real people who might be in the closet. If it’s a character I understand the discourse (I totally agree that we need the diversity/representation) but when people shit on Taylor or Billie for not coming out I think it’s dumb. We all had our own timeline for coming out- I don’t get why we don’t afford celebs the same right. It feels like people act like they’re “dolls” or “pretend characters” and then shit on them for not being out. Same with Harry styles, he is presenting gender queer but we can’t technically put that label on him because he hasn’t identified as such. Honestly same with Maddie. We all know that she is something under the umbrella of lgbtq+ because she’s let us know that much, but unless she says “I’m ___” we can’t put any labels on her. I think we all forget about human respect sometimes when it comes to celebrities because they’re untouchables. I think you and Maddie would be considered celebs and it’s the same with people trying to tell you that you’re an enby when you’re in fact NOT an enby. You’re just a more masc leaning lesbian person. But people love to label celebs because if we slap a label on them we feel like they’re more real to us- more like us.
Completely agree w Maddy about Barbie. Its a big ad wrapped in a flat (& unfunny) idea of feminism & is simply a badly made movie. I literally fell asleep the 1st time I watched it.
"I wish British people could revel in how funny they are" Not me, in NY 15 years ago, using the word "tomato" with unnecessary & frankly disturbing frequency, just for the joy of seeing Americans try to hold the laughter in. You're welcome, you lot ☕
I came out in highschool at about age 14 and some girls from my sports team went to our coach and told her they didn't feel comfortable with me in the shower with them anymore after games because I was gay now. I had already always hurried up with it as to not make anyone uncomfortable. That shit legitimately traumatized me so that's where my useless lesbian fear of being seen as predatory comes from
My personal view on the gay thought is that most (if not all women) have had experiences where men were predatory towards them when asking them out/flirting/etc. Since we've been raised in such a heteronomitive society that when we come out of the closet, most of the experiences we have seen are the way men look at women vs the way women look at women. So I think its a fear of coming off predatory since we all know how icky it feels. At least thats how I feel as a lesbian who exclusively dated dudes until I was 23. I logically know that I am not going to come off as a threat or predatory, but when learning how to date/approach women it is still my biggest fear lmao
100% this 👆🏻 Learning that pursuing women ≠ violating them. We conflate this bc most of us have some trauma from men and don't want to repeat those patterns. I definitely had to learn that pursuing women is not inherently predatory and can absolutely be done respectfully and consensually. I still slide into this mindset sometimes though.
ok im a cis bi female and ive done some poly with the late hubby so now im on my own in my 40's so living in the midwest doesnt help me find the female im looking for. im too much of a cougar in my 40's to try asking out a younger female. guess im shy now... love the pod btw
As a non native English speaker, I am always so bothered by the fact that "booty call" and "butt dial" are basically oposite, but sound like the exact same thing.
I'm a teenager who does stand-up but I've only ever preformed for my classmates and at talent shows and such. I was wondering how to go about getting booked at an actual comedy club and figured what better place to ask for help than here. So, yeah, if anyone can just give me some advice that would be great. Thanks!
Start doing open mics! Show bookings won’t happen till you do a ton of open mics first. Someone told me once if you’re not doing comedy 5x a week, you’re not doing comedy. I think that’s true. So try to just get on stage as often as you can. The bookings will come from your fellow comedians independent shows. Some will be at clubs. And don’t worry too much about whether clubs book you or pass you. Lots more commentary on that but just trust me. Get on stage!
Working conditions for the mostly female workforce at the barbie factory are terrible. They're not paid a living wage, they don't have safe working conditions. That movie is a superficial sham, an add for Matel and deserves zero oscars.
Maddiieeee you’re a real one for that barbie take. Bad art is bad! Point blank period.
idk why Ashley is talking like she has the only correct opinion about Barbie & interrupting/talking over Maddie
As a British person listening to the accent impressions, this was absolutely hilarious
They seemed to go a little feral at the sound of the accent 😂
Wdym feral
I could not stop laughing
It was pretty good! Aside from Maddie's David Bowie into Ringo bit 😂😂
I’m honestly glad you think so cause as an American I was gonna tell them they are officially fucking canceled
There’s something about the way Ashley and Ali talk to each other that makes me feel comfy
Ali on the podcast? We fucking won I don't even need to finish the episode to know its good
Combo
Not gonna lie, as someone who has seen every single episode of WHGS ever created , I vote this episode the most fascinating. A+ Ashley
Ashley I was walking in my little city square and I thought my AirPods were connected when I went to start the episode but instead you called out “Hello Bottoms!” from my phone at full volume with someone standing like five feet away from me 💀😂🤦🏻
this is the Way...
The Gay Agenda Intensifies
I'm Scottish and the english accents made me laugh so much - one of the best and most chaotic episodes yet
I'm 100% with Maddie. The end of this episode has derailed into the most random hilarious shit I've heard🤣
Regarding the Barbie movie, I agree with all 3 of you 😄
I am glad the movie was made & that it was sucessful and I had a fun time watching it. At the same time, I expected more in the direction that Maddie mentioned: There were plot holes/metaphors not translating well and I didn't like that the end kinda put a focus on genitalia.
The British segment was so unhinged 😂. Love it ❤🎉
I love how addictive your laughing fits in British are
Maddie-I agree with your take on the Barbie movie
SPEAK IT MADDIE!!! F*cking spot ON!!!!!
Ali is brilliant with her impression and just super funny, love the chemistry with Ashley.
This felt like being a quiet one in the corner at a party with really funny and sincere people and listening in. This episode made me so fuzzy and warm on the inside. Love ya!
Ashley you better come to Vancouver this year for a comedy show! This episode with Ali was awesome. Ali’s voice is such a stress reliever lmao.
The chaos was perfect! 😂
this was one of the best ones!!! love when your different hosts come together.
Ali's impression of an Australian has me on the floor 💀😂😂😂
me as an aussie SO CONFUSED hahahahah
@@zarli-aria 😂😂😂
this was a good episode of the podcast
Ali saying "I was doing an impression of sex and now I kinda found my voice" is so relateable!! I feel like I really learned sex in the last couple years (I'm in my 30s), too.
hahahaha so relatable
I am sitting at the airport just cracking up laughing. I have people just looking at me. Thanks for making the time fly by, pardon the pun, and for this hilarious episode.
Maddie is so insightful and thoughtful. Now I wanna watch the Barbie movie just so I can discuss it.
21:16 - For some reason I always use the matrix trilogy when Ali's kind of question about why get out of bed; For me I think back to when Smith at the end of revolutions questions Neo "Why Mr. Anderson, WHY WHY do you persist?" and Neo responds simply with "Because I choose to"
Car Talk was a blast of fun and the intelligence of their puns and word play!!! OMG!!
Why do I have a feeling they cut out a moment of general disappointment when Maddie said they were dating a man 😂
bro being a useless sapphic because of the fear of being inappropriate and making girls uncomfortable is such a relatable situation for me. Most of my friends are straight, or some of them may just not be out, and when I'm around those people I just feel like I have to be very careful not to make girls think I'm interested in them. I am non binary trans fem assigned male at birth, and I think this was one of the key ways I figured out I wasn’t a guy. Amongst many other things.
I needed this tonight. Thanks my loves
Maddie always slays but they are looking especially fine this ep! love the fit!!
Thank you Maddie for talking about the Barbie movie, I’m tired of people telling me that I didn’t understand it or that I’m not a feminist cause I didn’t like it.
Maddie!!! Car talk was a hoot! 🙌😆
Came here to say this!!!
Matti and Ali losing their minds was absolutely hilarious! Always a joy to watch the natural chaos! I wish I could afford the patreon...
I'm with Maddie on Barbie. Hear her out!

I had already always hurried up with it as to not make anyone uncomfortable. That shit legitimately traumatized me so that's where my useless lesbian fear of being seen as predatory comes from
So no one saw the famous pics of Jenny McCarthy on the toilet? It was an ad for something.
Maddie love your takes they can be different - I hated Dune and it is what it is 😂😂😂
OMG Ali 👏 👏👏👏👏 🇬🇧
Great episode! Whenever I see Ali is on, I know i'm gonna be laughing a lot!
Answer to the queer thought: the short answer is trauma. 🤷🏻♀️
31:00 yes!!!! Morning sex is where it’s at!! So much less stress
100% this 👆🏻
Learning that pursuing women ≠ violating them. We conflate this bc most of us have some trauma from men and don't want to repeat those patterns. I definitely had to learn that pursuing women is not inherently predatory and can absolutely be done respectfully and consensually. I still slide into this mindset sometimes though.
Funniest episode ever
ok im a cis bi female and ive done some poly with the late hubby so now im on my own in my 40's so living in the midwest doesnt help me find the female im looking for. im too much of a cougar in my 40's to try asking out a younger female. guess im shy now... love the pod btw
OMG! I’m so glad that I’m not alone because I, too, hated Barbie. It didn’t hit me at all.
Maddie is right 🤷🏻♀️
As a non native English speaker, I am always so bothered by the fact that "booty call" and "butt dial" are basically oposite, but sound like the exact same thing.
I am sorry but the end with Folton (how is it spelled?) Is the bets. He is the main character rn
Hitting like in advance
Working conditions for the mostly female workforce at the barbie factory are terrible. They're not paid a living wage, they don't have safe working conditions. That movie is a superficial sham, an add for Matel and deserves zero oscars.
