    Competing on an outdoor rink must have felt so magical

    I love the last frame where you see that she was doing her skate practice while wearing pearls. Beautiful skating.

    it's SOO Graceful!! It's magical what the athletes achieved with their gear and technology back that. Imagine!! the ice was different, weather was different, skates were different... wow..

    It is really fun to watch these old films of the Olympics past. It is also interesting to see how much Figure Skating has certainly changed a lot since then. It must have been hard to skate outdoors and wearing the costumes that they did back then.

      luvmuzik4me Tbh, the costumes look quite comfy. But I bet they were freezing, the poor things. At least the men got to wear trousers.

    • @soniquecat4745

      I would be more worried about their skating shoes... they look like they have no padding and support at all.
      plus the ice was probably very bad and uneven.
      it would be interesting to make the current champions skate in similar conditions (and skates and costumes)... they some may end up injured...

    The jumps may be totally different now, but the spins don’t seem to have changed all that much. I love the way the skirts flow with them!

    Thank you for posting this. I can't imagine where you found it. So much has changed in the years; I'll never understand the bent free leg on the landings of jumps.

    • @alexisbrownstein8579

      PecanSandees23 it's probably because the skates had a lot less support than they do now so it helped secure the ankle maybe

      Alexis Brownstein That makes sense, especially because the boot uppers (if you notice) fit higher on the calf than they do nowadays.

    • @smooshiebear80
      @smooshiebear80 2 роки тому +3

      It was primarily because the free leg would be bent when doing figures. It was sort of the standard resting position of the free leg

    At first I thought this was in slow motion. Then I realized it's the way they skated back then. It's so much slower than we're now used to.

    How lovely...they skated dignified and elegant. I loved how the ladies wore bloomers and headpieces. Dick Button was so light on his feet. My parents were only 2 years old then. It must of been so neat to been alive back then.

      Yes, nothing says fun like the end of WWII, dealing with the destruction and death and nuclear bombs, the takeover of Eastern Europe by the Soviets, severe shortages in the US as factories changed over from producing war goods, PTSD, horrific injuries....

    It was so much nicer in the past..outdoor competitions, surrounded by forests and fresh air, jumps not so complex as nowdays but also not so many ugly falls which totally kill the pleasure for both performers and public...This winter sport like all other actually was much much pleasurable to watch in the past than it is now..

    Seems like they took their spins a little more seriously back then. There's so much focus on the jumps nowadays that some of the artistry in some skaters is lost. IMO currently Jason Brown is the best for men.

    • @moonlight_oats
      @moonlight_oats 5 років тому +1

      Mary Carla Jason Brown is an amazing skater, probably my favorite too. I feel like jumps do help draw attention to figure skating because it looks more impressive to do. I’m not mad at the current way that skating is but there are always jewels like Jason

      Try doing these jumps on outdoor rinks, which is where they skated at the time. Also, 60% of the score was based on school figures (figure 8s -- you know, the term for which "figure skating" got its name?) ;)

    • @foxinbox500
      @foxinbox500 7 років тому +14

      Well said, the outdoor rinks had a rough bumpy surface that would not have been suitable for the big quads of today.

      Lisa foxinbox Fox Didn't they have Zambonis back then? I thought they did. Seems like if they were used anywhere, it would've been at these high-level competitions.

    • @soniquecat4745
      @soniquecat4745 6 років тому +4

      I think zambonis came in the late 1950. I think it was Carol Heiss (but I may be mistaking her for some of the other old time competitors) who said they had to shovel their ice back then if it was snowing heavily.

I am sure and fully accepting the fact that a few generations from now people will laugh about the movies I thought were awesome and groundbreaking and go like: "They aren't even 4D....!"
      I do believe that the guy was aware of the fact that at some point he will be overtaken. Just not by how much.
