I love pointing out that, of all the cinematic adaptations of Christmas Carol that have been made, the Muppets version has the most lines quoted verbatim from the novel
The best rendition I ever saw was Patrick Stewart's one-man show on Broadway. It was essentially a straight reading of the book with Stewart acting out every character, including inanimate objects. Sadly they haven't released a video of it, but Stewart did also play Scrooge in a film version as well. I understand the NYPL Performing Arts library has a tape of it, but it would have to be watched on premises.
The 2009 mocap animated version with Jim Carrey, of all versions, is also surprisingly close to being verbatim from the book, for the majority of its dialogue. Indeed, it's the only version I have seen where Christmas Present's lines disavowing self-proclaimed religious politicians, who at the time tried to deny the poor from accessing bakeries and the like on religious holidays, can be found in an adaptation. I can understand why that version is less talked about, however. Mocap animation is often the quickest to age poorly, for starters, and for another that version's slapstick filler definitely felt far more like filler than anything in the Muppet version. Muppet slapstick is hard to do poorly, though, to be fair.
J. Draper's youtube channel just did a historical analysis (reaction) to this movie comparing its accuracy to the book, and she pointed out that the decision to have a narrator character reading lines more or less verbatim from the book let it use a lot of Dickens original phrasing that normally doesn't wind up in stage versions due to lack of a narrator. The main divergences are that they edited out all mention of boiling christmas pudding because modern Americans don't have that, and they changed young Scrooge to already dislike Christmas when the Ghost of Christmas past's main message in the book was "you used to love Christmas". She also pointed out some British propriety/social class things like Scrooge sending a turkey to Cratchett's house but NOT showing up uninvited, and instead going to his nephew's party which he had been invited to. (And then the bit about increasing his salary happening the next morning, which would have meant Piggy couldn't be there, and also that the lead actor couldn't steal Tiny Tim's last line...)
'A Christmas Carol' was the first Dickens book I read (in primary school), and I think that this movie is a wonderful introduction for children to classic literature. If they do read it (you can imagine kids saying to their parents, 'Gonzo told us to read the book' - brilliant!), they would be drawn through it by recognising the pieces of the script that were taking directly from the book. It was a clever, creative melding of literature and entertainment to give children an understanding of how wonderful those stories are. I was so happy to see, later, the adaptation of Treasure Island in the same way, starring Tim Curry.
All the Muppet movies are worth watching but this and Muppet Treasure Island are the best! Muppet Treasure Island was my favorite movie as a kid (and Tim Curry’s Long John Silver remains my favorite movie pirate) and Muppet Christmas Carol is my favorite Xmas movie.
Muppet Christmas Carol is best because Michael Caine acts as if he is not playing against felt-covered hands but rather on a West End stage. Muppet Treasure Island works because Tim Curry acts as if he is a muppet himself. They both put in a masterful performance with the normal expertise of the Henson Shop.
@JeshuaSquirrel I don't think I agree that Tim Curry acts like a muppet really other than a great amount of energy to his performance. His interactions with Jim Hawkins have a real sincerity to them, and feel very real. His character lacks the irony that most muppets usually possess.
@@JeshuaSquirrelI take it this is the first Muppet movie that Mary has watched because she wasn’t aware that there would be people in the movie too lol

My favorite version of A Christmas Carol, and my favorite traditional Christmas movie full stop. I love Gonzo’s turn as Charles Dickens, this was the first movie where he had Rizzo were paired up and they have stuck with that through various other films and tv shows since. Michael Caine steals the show as Scrooge. Despite being surrounded by colorful Muppets, he gives a serious performance (at his own insistence) which helps you get lost in the story rather than worrying about why he is dealing with a bird and a bear in the past flashbacks. The next Muppet movie to be released was another adaption of a public domain work, Muppet Treasure Island, where Tim Curry played the one legged pirate Long John Silver, a performance worth seeing.
I am so glad you liked this one, it is one of my favorite Christmas movies. Another movie I liked is the 2018 I think that is the year for The Grinch. One of the best puppet movies for me is The Dark Crystal
I've watched a lot of adaptations of The Christmas Carol since the 70s when I was a kid. My favorite used to be the one with George C Scott from the 80s, until I watched this one. This is my favorite adaptation to date. There are many great Muppets movies that are adaptations of famous novels. I would recommend you starting from Muppets Treasure Island with Tim Curry and go from there.
I had a ginger cat for years, and he was the most affectionate cat I've ever had. I swear, we understood each other. He had different meows for different things, and he was good at following simple orders from me. He was awesome.
I live across the street from a cemetery in the US started in the 19th century, and I've seen at least two Ebeneezers there. One's wife was named Hermione.

If you want to see actual versions of A Christmas Carol, two classics are the 1984 version with George C Scott (my favorite) and the 1951 version with Alistair Sim. That version is in black and white and some of the actors are coming from the theater so like the guy who plays Marley is a bit over dramatic. Couldn't leave the stage acting behind. But both versions are really fantastic.
You should think about peeping some of the original muppet movies! Find out about the love story between kermit and piggy! The Muppet Movie and Muppets Take Manhattan!
Actually, Dickens wrote the NOVELLA, not 'Novel', A Christmas Carol - small point to some, but their graphic credit was factually incorrect. Ebenezer is found in the Bible - it means 'Stone of help' and was set up as a memorial (monument) by Samuel, but during the late 18th/early 19th century in Britain and America it was common to name people Old Testament names, and 'Ebenezer' occasionally became confused with a person's name, if that helps. Michael Caine plays Ebenezer here, and you'll love him in DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (1988) with Steve Martin.
My personal Christmas movie of all time and my personal Muppet movie time of all time and always been close to my heart and i have seen little bit Sesame Street, Animal Show and Fraggle Rock, but this movie introduced me to Muppets and since than i became huge Muppet fan. It's always funny how reactors that never saw many films with Muppets are always surprised that they're in the world alongside regular humans, but no Mary, they aren't treated as second class. No matter how odd they may be in the setting they're still taken in stride and treated as normal. As for Mr. Applegate, the lavender Muppet that was thrown out of Scrooge's office, he wasn't being discriminated. Just behind in his mortgage and it was more comedic to have Scrooge literally pick him up and toss him out. Also, did you watch the version with the song, "When the Love is Gone" when Belle leaves Ebeneezer? Your edit cuts away right before it would start and i just wanted to know because it adds so much more depth to Scrooge, especially seeing him pick up the song to sing with his lost love.
Hey Mary, if you are looking for more muppet inspired movies I have one suggestion. I always really liked their interpretation of the Treasure Island story. It’s called Muppet Treasure Island (1996). Loved that movie growing up. It features Tim Curry as a pirate named Long John Silver. Lots of original songs too like A Muppets Christmas Carol.
Nah, there was more to it than that. Jim Henson joined the Muppets with Sesame Street. Jim Henson and Frank Oz did voices for Sesame Street characters too…. Henson did Ernie and Frank Oz did Burt
When Scrooge is with Belle, a deleted scene features Bell singing "When Love Is Gone" which has the same melody as "The Love We Found" that is sung at the finale. ua-cam.com/video/RbawsayImds/v-deo.html
Ebenezer is a Hebrew word, it’s mentioned in the Old Testament. The prophet Samuel gives the name to a stone to commemorate God’s help fighting the Philistines.
Definitely watch the original 1979 Muppet Movie. The sequels were good too. Afterwards, check out the 2011 movie, The Muppets. Does a good job with the nostalgia but works better if you saw the original movies or the 70s TV show.
Fun Fact: Michael Caine only agreed to be in this if he could play the character as if this was a serious Scrooge film and he could treat the muppets as if they were real people. For me, this absolutely makes the film.
The version with When Love is Gone will always be the only version that should be watched. At 39 years old I still get choked up when he receives the red scarf
I still have this VHS in the basement. I break out the player and the tape every Christmas season to watch it, because the edited version frustrates me so. Its such a good scene in the movie, and I have no idea why it was cut from modern versions. Irks me with every reaction I see of it come out.
I genuinely believe that A Christmas Carol might be one of the greatest stories ever told, and the only way you could ever improve upon the story is with Muppets. This is also THE most accurate depiction of the original story in terms of costumes.
I hated when they removed the song "When Love Is Gone" out of the movie, it was very important for Ebenezer Scrooge's redemption to be more built up which leads to the song "The Love We Found" in the end. Without the song, it make's no sense.
I appreciate that they put the VHS version on Disney+, it just annoys me that it’s hidden underneath the extras section for the movie instead instead of being better advertised.
Yes, but however Brian only did a decent job of keeping the Muppets going after his dad past away. This movie and Treasure Island were the only good Muppet movies when Brian Henson took charge… Muppets from Space was terrible! And there wasn’t even another Muppet movie for another 12 years after that
@@nsasupporter7557 I heard his heart wasn't really in it, as he'd had a complicated relationship with his father and his father's creations; like a lot of children of people we view as geniuses, Brian often felt his father was neglecting him in favor of his work, so basically becoming the heir apparent to the studio was pretty rough for him. Not helped that one of the few places Brian tried to step in and put his foot down as the new boss was shot down by Disney; that being his insistence that Steve Whitmire _not_ be made the new Kermit. He'd already known for years that Whitmire could be egotistical and demanding, and being given the frog only made this worse. Not only did Whitmire grind down Kermit's edges like what happened to Mickey Mouse, but over his 25+ years as Kermit, he picked up a shocking number of accusations of sexual harassment. And this eventually led to Whitmire's dismissal in 2019. Anyways, all things considered, I think Brian did am admirable job making the best of a bad hand.
Muppet Movie 1979, the Great Muppet Caper, Muppet Treasure Island, Muppets 2011, and Muppets: Most Wanted are my Muppet movie recommendations. So glad you enjoyed this one!
"Doomed Scrooge, you're doomed for all time. Your future is a horror story written by your crime. Your chains are forged by what you say and do. So have your fun, when life is done, a nightmare waits for you!" Fantastic lyrics and so chilling. For me the Marley & Marley song is the best bit of the film.
I’m sure some may have mentioned before, but unfortunately for Scrooge, Belle married and had kids. Made a good life without him. They don’t mention it in this version but other adaptations go into more detail on Scrooge’s past and why he is how he is. I do love this version though :) all the songs are great.
Just thinking the words "Muppet Treasure Island" has my head bopping. It is an all-time classic, infinitely quotable and totally hilarious. If you need something to make you smile, nothing is better.
The Muppet Movie (1979) is an absolute must-see. Great songs, a frog on a bike, a bear in his natural habitat, a beauty pageant pig, and some great cameos from the late 70's.
"What's great about Muppet's Christmas Carol is that Michael Caine treats his Muppets as fellow actors, and what's great about Muppet's Treasure Island is that Tim Curry treats himself as a fellow Muppet." ^ old internet proverb
You asked about any other Muppet Christmas programs, let me suggest "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas" All the music in it was written by the same guy that wrote the music for "Muppet Christmas Carol", Paul Williams. "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas" has been a favorite of mine for many years. It first aired in 1977 (Canada) and 1978 (US).
@@Travis_D_Travesty Brian Henson did a decent job of keeping the Muppets going after his father died, but he didn’t do that great. Because Christmas Carol and Treasure Island were the only good Muppet movies after Jim’s death. Muppets from Space was terrible… there wasn’t even another Muppet for 12 years after that
If you look at the stores behind Scrooge you'll see one called Micklewhite's; Michael Caine's birth name was Maurice Micklewhite. The Spirit of Christmas Past was inspired by the gelflings in the 1982 Jim Henson movie "The Dark Crystal" which was also directed by Frank Oz. Another great Muppet movie is "Muppet Treasure Island" with Tim Curry.
This was my first and probably favorite movie version of A Christmas Carol. And this version actually recites more of the original book than any other.
Yep he played as if he was working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and it works. Patrick Stewart and George C. Scott versions also amazing. Stewart had a long-running one man theater show of it as well.
I can highly recommend Muppet Treasure Island - it's an excellent film and rendition of Treasure Island, along with starring Tim Curry in a very memorable role.
This is one of the top three renditions of "A Christmas Carol" ever put to film. The other two being Scrooged (which you watched last year) and "Scrooge" from 1951 starring Alastair Sim. It's old and the picture quality and sound suffers as a result but it is absolutely excellent in every other way. If we watch no other movie as a family during the Christmas season, we always make sure to watch that one.
So if you don't know, Statler and Waldorf play the Marley brothers in this version of the story. Waldorf's line, "leave comedy to the bears", is a reference to how the two elderly men always heckle Fozzie Bear's comedy. Also, the first spirit that appears was complicated to film with, to say the least. And by that, I mean, the special effects for it. ALSO, also, there's a song that was cut from the film when it came out in theaters. The VHS release restored it, but subsequent DVD and Blu-ray releases removed it again. Even Disney+ didn't have the full film with the scene intact, but it was recently restored and it's found in the bonus features. Edit: I highly recommend watching the original Muppet Movie and Muppet Treasure Island, especially since Tim Curry is in the latter, and he practically steals the show. Speaking of, if you haven't yet, you should ABSOLUTELY check out The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tim Curry's in that one, too, and let me tell you, it's really something to see. And make sure you check it out in theaters afterward, as that's the BEST way to experience it. You can film a reaction at home to understand the plot and the songs, but in theaters, you gotta participate. They have a mirror cast with the film as the backdrop, you gotta shout specific lines at certain points, bring certain props, and of course, you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to do the Time Warp. People are gonna pull you outta your seat whether you wanna do it or not.
Michael Caine's Agent: "It's just a Christmas movie with the Muppets, Michael. Easy job." Michael Caine: "I'm going to play this as serious as a heart attack..."
All the older Muppet movies are totally worth watching. There was an abc(?) special that followed the "it's a wonderful life" story format. Was a fun watch
I think that one was on NBC if I remember correctly, "It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie". Besides the regular cast of Muppets, some of the other cast included David Arquette, Joan Cusack, and Whoopi Goldberg.
This was the first Muppet movie to be made after the death of Jim Henson. As a result Kermit in this movie is portrayed by Steve Whitmire who had worked a performer for the Muppets for 12 years going all the way back to the original Muppet show when he was a teenager
Yes, but unfortunately Brian Henson only did a decent job of keeping his dad’s business going. Because this movie and Treasure Island were the only good Muppet movies that came out after Jim passed away… Muppets from Space was terrible. And they didn’t come out with another Muppet movie 12 years after that one
It's a pity to see another reaction missing out on "The Love is Gone" - that song by Belle really sells the relationship Scrooge had, and lost; and makes that scene so much more heartbreaking.
@@poggerwhitesome executive thought it slowed down the movie and had it removed from home media. It was added in to a special edition extended cut on a dvd release a few years ago; and reportedly is or has been added back to the version available for streaming on Disney+.
The Love we Found that was sung at the end of the film was a reply to the song The Love is Gone. This was sung during Belle’s breakup with Scrooge, and it beautifully told this moment in his life that developed his character. Only Disney cut it out as it was deemed “too depressing”. Still haven’t forgiven them for that!
ALSO- The Muppet Treasure Island - Tim Curry as Long John Silver - ENOUGH SAID!! Michael Caine treated Muppet Christmas Carol as if his muppet costars weren't really muppets and performed Scrooge as if he was performing for the Queen. And then you have Tim Curry for Treasure Island who approaches it as if he was a Muppet himself.
Muppet and Jim Henson productions are almost always an absolute treat. I can’t remember if you’ve watched Labyrinth or Dark Crystal, but I highly recommend both, and all the Muppet Movies, but especially the first three.
The Muppet Movie was good. The Great Muppet Caper. Muppets Take Manhattan. Muppet Treasure Island. Muppets from Space. The Muppet Wizard of Oz. Kermit's Swap Years. It's A Very Merry Muppet Christmas. A Muppets Christmas: Letters to Santa. A Muppet Family Christmas. The Muppets. Muppets Most Wanted.
I started watching this movie every year with my parents when I was a kid, I was OBSESSED with the Muppets. Its a tradition ive now carried on with my own kids, the amount of this movie i can quote from memory is scary lmao

Another great Muppet movie you should watch is Muppet Treasure Island
The dark Crystal is another good one, but darker
Hey Mary, if you are looking for more muppet inspired movies I have one suggestion. I always really liked their interpretation of the Treasure Island story. It’s called Muppet Treasure Island (1996). Loved that movie growing up. It features Tim Curry as a pirate named Long John Silver. Lots of original songs too like A Muppets Christmas Carol.
I love you Mary cherry merry Christmas
Still, in my opinion, the best film adaptation of this story.
The Dickens Society agrees. They've said this is the most faithful adaptation to the text and message of the novel.
Please watch Muppets Treasure Island in the future. It stars Tim Curry and Score by Hans Zimmer
Sir Michael Caine, everybody...
“Robert Marley”… ha!… Bob Marley.
The Muppet movie or the the heat Muppet caper or the dark crystal
Just FYI, an interesting fact, The Muppets are different than Sesame Street, the only crossover is Kermit.
Nah, there was more to it than that. Jim Henson joined the Muppets with Sesame Street. Jim Henson and Frank Oz did voices for Sesame Street characters too…. Henson did Ernie and Frank Oz did Burt
"Muppet Treasure Island", with the great Tim Curry. ✌️❤️🌹
The prophet Samuel gives the name to a stone to commemorate God’s help fighting the Philistines.
react to Violent Night (2022), pretty please Mary!!! p.s. (santa as a beater)
Removing the song that was in the Christmas Past scene is a crime. At least Disney+ givew you the option of adding it back in.
I like to think Brian Henson replied, "That's exactly what I want you to do."
In contrast to Tim Curry who treated himself as a fellow muppet in Muppet’s Treasure Island
@@cixelsyd40and amazingly it works for both of them.
I loved how he said that he would neither sing nor dance... and yet he did!
The power of the Muppets.
His performance makes this movie, in my opinion. It’s also a good showcase, for people who don’t know, of what a professional Michael Caine is.
The version with When Love is Gone will always be the only version that should be watched.
At 39 years old I still get choked up when he receives the red scarf
I swear it was the version on Disney but I watched it today and it's not :(
@@TheDarkPorkins Its a bonus feature, for whatever reason
I hate that they cut it
Is that the song that Belle sings when she leaves Scrooge? It was in the movie I had on VHS, and even as a kid made me tear up.
You should check out the Albert Finney 1970s version also a musical adaption.
As well as 1951 with Aleister Sims "Scrooge"
It really is. Look at ALL the adaptations.
I hated when they removed the song "When Love Is Gone" out of the movie, it was very important for Ebenezer Scrooge's redemption to be more built up which leads to the song "The Love We Found" in the end. Without the song, it make's no sense.
I grew up with the VHS, so I only found out like 4 years ago that it was ever removed! So upset!
I appreciate that they put the VHS version on Disney+, it just annoys me that it’s hidden underneath the extras section for the movie instead instead of being better advertised.
I mean, that song destroys me so I can kinda understand lol
I prefer it in too but holy crap is it sad.
As depressing the song is, I agree.
It’s criminal that it was removed.
Jim Henson would have been proud of the job that his son did directing this production. It's a solid Muppets feature.
Yes, but however Brian only did a decent job of keeping the Muppets going after his dad past away. This movie and Treasure Island were the only good Muppet movies when Brian Henson took charge… Muppets from Space was terrible! And there wasn’t even another Muppet movie for another 12 years after that
@@nsasupporter7557 I loved Muppets from Space as a child.
@@JHowesitgoing123 I finally saw the 2 most recent ones… The Muppets 2011 and Muppets Most Wanted 2014, both were good
@@nsasupporter7557 I heard his heart wasn't really in it, as he'd had a complicated relationship with his father and his father's creations; like a lot of children of people we view as geniuses, Brian often felt his father was neglecting him in favor of his work, so basically becoming the heir apparent to the studio was pretty rough for him.
Let's not also forget that "Muppet Christmas Carol" was Brian's directorial debut. I think he did a fantastic job with this Christmas classic.
Muppet Movie 1979, the Great Muppet Caper, Muppet Treasure Island, Muppets 2011, and Muppets: Most Wanted are my Muppet movie recommendations. So glad you enjoyed this one!
What about Muppets take Manhattan?
I saw The Great Muppet Caper and The Muppets Take Manhattan during their respective original theatrical runs.
Muppet Treasure Island was always my favorite.
@@RichardX1 there was also another one called Muppet Classic Theater
They're all worth seeing. Even Muppets from Space.
Honestly it was a PERFECT use of Statler and Waldorf in this movie
Agreed. Not enough people give enough credit to how brilliant the lyrics are in this film.
This is the greatest adaptation of A Christmas Carol, hands down; Muppet Treasure Island is another childhood favorite of mine :)
This movie is amazingly faithful to the novel. They quote direct passages during the narration, for example.
The Muppet Movie (1979) is an absolute must-see. Great songs, a frog on a bike, a bear in his natural habitat, a beauty pageant pig, and some great cameos from the late 70's.
. . . a Studebaker.
"What's great about Muppet's Christmas Carol is that Michael Caine treats his Muppets as fellow actors, and what's great about Muppet's Treasure Island is that Tim Curry treats himself as a fellow Muppet."
^ old internet proverb
You asked about any other Muppet Christmas programs, let me suggest "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas" All the music in it was written by the same guy that wrote the music for "Muppet Christmas Carol", Paul Williams. "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas" has been a favorite of mine for many years. It first aired in 1977 (Canada) and 1978 (US).
You have to see "Muppet Treasure Island", it is the best Muppet movie ever! (In my opinion.)
Agreed! Tim Curry nailed Long John Silver
We Got Cabin Fever! With a little Love Power!
@@Travis_D_Travesty Brian Henson did a decent job of keeping the Muppets going after his father died, but he didn’t do that great. Because Christmas Carol and Treasure Island were the only good Muppet movies after Jim’s death. Muppets from Space was terrible… there wasn’t even another Muppet for 12 years after that
@@nsasupporter7557 I agree, but I enjoy the Wizard of Oz. It's it's a shame the wizard wasn't Frank. That seriously was a mess opportunity.
Thanks for reacting to my favorite adaptation of this story. Merry Christmas Mary and to everyone who reads these words
One of the funniest and cutest Muppet movies ever made!
MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄🎁⛄
7:00, they say it cos they're not likely to see the person again until the new year.
I’m glad your enjoying the movie 😊
I hope you seen the lost scene song- When Love Is Gone Mary. It explain Scrooge and Rizzo crying
You should watch MUPPETS TAKE MANHATTAN (1984). Definitely the best of all the Muppet movies.
Michael Caine playing Scrooge so straight is brilliant
Michael Caine's Agent: "It's just a Christmas movie with the Muppets, Michael. Easy job."
Michael Caine: "I'm going to play this as serious as a heart attack..."
"...And absolutely SLAY!"
Yeah, it's unfortunately been removed from almost every version except the original VHS release and maybe some early DVDs. Not sure why
ALSO-
The Muppet Treasure Island -
Tim Curry as Long John Silver - ENOUGH SAID!!
Michael Caine treated Muppet Christmas Carol as if his muppet costars weren't really muppets and performed Scrooge as if he was performing for the Queen.
And then you have Tim Curry for Treasure Island who approaches it as if he was a Muppet himself.
Muppets Treasure Island is also amazing.
Yes, unfortunately Christmas Carol and Treasure Island were the only 2 good Muppet movies after Jim Henson past away
