Kelly, I’m an author, and I also do mixed media artwork with books. Anyone who tells you that you’re defacing a book should go do whatever they want with their own books and leave you alone. Publishers, libraries, schools, book stores, and other retailers throw books straight into the garbage every single day (and as per their contracts with book distributors, retailers are required to destroy the books by removing their covers before throwing them away). In other words, you’re not doing anything worse than professionals who work primarily with books all day every day. But instead of throwing books away, you’re giving them a new life. So you do you thing!!!
What he said 😉 love this, putting it on my list. Were you ever a teacher, I'm always impressed with the way you present you're video's. You have the perfect balance of up beat fun and great clear instructions. I'm happy your family is will. Stay safe stay well, God Bless.
Yes you are definitely. Some people don't respect books. They feel nothing about destroying them . I am a creative person and I got a ton of magazines that I feel so hard to get rid. But I do use them for crafts. Even I have a lot of books. I use them also for my crafts. Every individual is different and have different likes. So do ignore what they say as you enjoy doing what you like.
This reminds me of the Christmas tree centerpieces we made in the 60's and 70' s out of the old Readers Digest magazine. Fond memories of my newly married first Christmas craft. Good update.
Right? I was considering some of the farm magazines that fill up our house. I'm going to make one for my Mom's door at the seniors lodge...they are in lock down there, you know why. And the attention that my crafts get there just shocks me. I'm sure each and every senior would remember the reader's digest trees and gosh, wouldn't that bring back some nostalgia and joy? Weren't we creative back when? LOL
And what about newspaper? I think I remember us doing it with it too. Our trees were bigger and stood up around the room but same method. Without the distressing but I love the distressed look, Kelly!
People need to get bent out of shape over some of the serious issues in this world and not using a book for recreating talent. If your not happy about it, you really don't have to watch. 🥰 Your garland is adorable Kelly. TYFS ❤
I've had my mom's bible sitting on a shelf, gathering dust for years. I used pages from it to make paper coils (paper tubes rolled into coils) to make a frame for a picture I got when I was in Israel. I wrestled with whether this was disrepsectful to the bible, but the truth is that I think of my mom every time I see the picture, which is hung in a prominent place. So I feel I'm honoring her.
Lela, you are so right, with all the issues going on in the world who cares about a book that is produced in the thousands, it’s not like your using the last book of the issue!! I would much rather see some ones creativity than see a book rotting on the shelf!! This gal is so creative and I feel the cook looks awesome this way!! xx
That garland's so cute! The best part when you make your own garlands s that you can decide how long you want t to be. As for cutting books, go ahead because real Christmas trees turn into books!!!
I inherited all my dad and moms books, not having the heart to get rid of them I am going to make each one of my three kids a keepsake garland. They were very close to my parents.Cant wait to get started!Thank you!!
I have a degree in English Lit, with a focus on literary fiction and I'm also a published author. With that said, I love to see crafts made of books. I've seen beautiful pieces of furniture, lamps and so much more made using books. I used my own work to make a book wreath and I've used copies of friends favorite books to make them a wreath as well. I don't understand why anyone would think this is a bad craft. I could understand if you cut up a super rare, first edition masterpiece. But really, this is a great way to recycle and repurpose. Kelly, this is an adorable craft and I will defiantly recreate it!
I remember making these out out craft paper in school when I was a child long ago and gave it to my mom for Christmas. Thanks for the wonderful memory.
What's not to love. It's cute and very budget friendly. These would also make great package toppers. For those who are worried about destroying a book you could always source damaged books from the library or neighborhood bookstore. Thanks Kelly
I love book page crafts. It takes me a long time usually because I end up reading the book while I'm making stuff. I would use this technique to make a pop-out greeting card. I think it would be cute! I get books from the local library when they are going to dispose of them. I make hard cover purses with the outside and angels from the pages when I can remove them still bound.
I love you both, she always brings a smile to my face. She and my granddaughter are so much a like. I love your use of this book, it is so cute. I think it is great that people find a use for the books, they would be storied any way, this way they have found a purpose and happiness.
It reminds me of the old fashioned decorations that my grandparents used to make for Christmas. They used all kinds of things they had around the house to make their Christmas special. I would love to see you do some ornaments using the same influence. Love the country style.
Kelly, I love this! I used to be an English teacher and I love books, but quite honestly, some books are obsolete and will never be read again. Especially old college textbooks. Better a cute craft than a landfill. Sure, some 3rd world countries might use them, but unless you're traveling there, getting them there would cost more than it's worth.
I was going to say the same thing. I am a college instructor and down the hall from my office is a large crate full of out of date text books bound for the recycle center!
I have a hard time cutting up books. But at the same time it is paper! Once you own something it is yours to use as you need. Loved these trees..Endless possibilities to use them...You could always read that book first!
That is so adorable. You could even wrap some fairy lights if someone likes that and needs a little light. I am trying to think of ways to decorate my bedroom once I move. Your idea I think would be great with maybe the face of a flower and wrapped with a small green garland instead of the Christmas one. I love your diys. They give me ideas tobmatch my decor and use yours also. Thanks Sweetie. I hope all is going great for you and yours. I know its been hard on all of you. I pray God blesses you and yours in every way possible.
hI Kelly! I love this book tree garland! I definitely plan on making this! You mentioned the stockings, you could actually mix the shapes with trees, stockings, stars etc.. but for the simplicity of it, I LOVE the trees! It could stay up all winter long! Take care and stay safe! Blessings~
As a former English professor, and obviously English Major, rip that book apart baby!!!! nothing is sadder than an unused, unloved book!!! make it loveable! Go for it! Makes my English Lit heart sing in happiness!!!
Anyone who would have a problem cutting up a book: you could do this same project with newspapers or magazines. Or, just print some pages of text and use that. :) I immediately thought of card making with this one. You could put that inside a card, and it would be beautiful displayed on someone's mantelpiece. I appreciate it very much, because it will be one that can easily translate to a Hanukkah project...I'm going to to make dreidels using this technique. :)
Wow I love your take no BS attitude chick and I loved the trees and I agree with you I see the endless art with them old books and I have always wanted to try something like this
Kelly I'm just a country girl from TN; and your crafts feed my soul. Odd thing to say. I'm in UT now but your crafts take me home. Keep those twine bows coming !
I love that garland. We made paper Christmas trees using Readers Digest back when I was 8 years old. Some thrift stores sell books just for using as crafts. You can make garland for any holiday.
Hi Kelly. I love this. It reminds me of something that was brought out down through the years to decorate someones mantle. Very sweet and sentimental.❤️🎄❄️
Hi Kelly! I agree with you, I make things from books and I feel that I am still using it and making into more art that is just as beautiful. You can totally get books this size from the DT. This is very pretty! Thanks for sharing with us.
I love this! You're so amazing! I swear you could make something amazing out of a roll of a piece of string which I guess you do with your twine flowers and bows! Thank you for helping me know that absalutely everything in this world has many many multiple creative possibilities! I love watching you create things! I hope everything is going well in yours and your families lives. I keep you and your family in my prayers every night.
how ridiculous that anyone would criticize you for repurposing a book! Ignore them honey they are jealous of your or whatever their damage is! People just like to tear down others to make themselves feel better.... thank you for your fun videos and your sparkling personality! Repurposing SAVES things from going into the dump btw which is the next step from Dollar Tree for most items since many of them are discontinued items that are closeouts and probably will be thrown out before long or end up at the flea market and then if they don't sell in a dump/landfill!
I did something similar, but used antique gold acrylic paint to burnish the edges. Used a red berry garland to wrap my sisal twine as well. Turned out great to gi with my gild and red decorations in the house and on Christmas tree. Great tutorial, honey. Keep up the fantastic videos! Much love!
That turned out too stinking cute! I’m definitely going to try my hand at this. As far as “defacing” books, once you own it, you may do whatever you want to with or to it, as long as it’s not illegal or hurting someone. The book lover in me has a really, really hard time using books for crafting, but I still do it on occasion. I set aside the ones not in good shape specifically for that reason, or like you, buy one from DT or the thrift store. I’d actually like to see more crafts from you using books.
Kelly that garland you made is so pretty. I love it! And if it hurts people to see someone do a craft with a book then in my opinion they shouldn’t watch the video. Why watch something that makes you upset? Which is why I don’t watch too much news or watch violent movies or watch videos that have animal abuse. Thank you Kelly for your simple but cute craft. I can repurpose some old books I’ve read in this way and they’ll always be with me😊
I remember my mom and aunts using readers digest for Thanksgiving projects. Fold tand fan them out like a turkey and spray them and use for center pieces.
The book trees were adorable. The fact that the trees were repurposed from a book, actually makes them more cool. I was really glad that you did not paint over the pages so that people could see the tree was made from a book.
Even though I'm a book lover, I think this is just awesome!! It's not like you're cutting up a 1st edition & you could even use TV guides or anything like that! And I love the red berries!! :)
Our "Friends of the Library" store is open today, and I'm going to get a few books. I think I'll get some "pulp fiction" paperbacks and make a smaller scaled garland that will fit better in my home. I'll be supporting the library so they can get more books, and helping to keep the old books from going to the landfill too. The popular fiction paperbacks have a short shelf life in any case.
This turned out great!!! As far as the naysayers go, how is this any different from people that use the funny papers to wrap gifts? Or a regular calendar and then throwing away all the pictures inside at the end of the year? I can only dream of having so little in my life to worry about that I have time to nitpick such things 🙄, my goodness! When I was scrapbooking I used to use pages out of books to frame a photo of cut a quote/segment out and use it to accent the page, and those were books I paid full price for. Once I've bought it I figure the author has made their money. But I could go on all day about people that will always find something to be unhappy about! I love it and think it's a great piece!!
There are a lot of different crafts using books. They can be bought at thrift stores and you will be saving them from the landfill. Your garland is adorable.
That looks like a fun craft I would like to do. I do agree with you to recycle books as well. This craft puts that book to a better use than for it to end up in a garbage dump. The pages from the book is the right idea paper to use for a rustic farmhouse look. Ideas are endless! By using color paper, stock paper, Christmas whapping paper, etc. Have a wonderful day 🍂🌾🍃
I love this creation of yours. I love seeing your craft ideas. They have those berries in gold now and silver as well as tiny little bells of all colours. Thank you for sharing your gifts of creating. God bless you and your family and continue to be safe❣️
I'm loving this! I was bequeathed a box full of classic books that had been damaged. The covers are all missing. I've come up with several projects -- including papering my hall -- but this one is going to the top of the list! Thanks for sharing! Be safe! Michelle
There are always those who have complaints, if you bought that book, it's yours to do with what you like. Loved your little idea of making these cute little trees. Keep up the good work, and see you soon.
I have always been torn about using a book for crafts. But I just love this! I actually am doing different themed crafts for 7 trees for my friends ( hoping we can get together to decorate them but Covid!). One is a Kitchen themed tree...so I made a "pie" shaped garland from an old cookbook I had! It is so cute! You have given me another idea for decorations! Hope you are doing well and everyone is safe!
I love this! Last year I made a Christmas tree from a song book for my classroom. This would be a great addition. I like using books in my classroom. I might use stars!
Great use of a book! It came out so dynamic with the berries. I have used books for crafts as the paper is nice and stiff. I get them from my library, they collect and resell donated books as a fundraiser. At the end of the day a bag full is $5, I have gotten art books, atlases, cookbooks. Better use than a landfill.
I lov to read n craft ....so this is perfect when I'm done reading a book ..n keep in mind all my books I read more then once ... then I have something to do with them I can't bring myself to throw books away especially ones that are in good condition....so yeah ☺☺☺
That garland is beautiful i love it im so going to try people need to worry about whats going on in the world and around them not so much about a book..stay safe thank uou for sharing
I absolutely LOVE this Kelly, and hope to make ! I am an AVID reader and rip up books AND make lots of crafts from them. I do not rip up sentimental bks., or special gift bks; but I do rip up bks. from the dollar tree, library sales, garage sales, etc. I can't believe the fuss people would make over a $1 book! How about worrying and commenting about the BIG things. Like people dying from horrendous things, murder,, babies being slaughtered even up to birth! Children being molested, human trafficking, etc. Get a life. Thanks Kelly. Always like it when you do paper crafts.

THIS!!!!!!! Best comment EVER! I hope others read this too! I agree with you...thanks for sharing this Mike!🤎🌲gorgeous garland Kelly!🥰
Love this comment! Wonderfully said Mike! Thank you for educating a bit on the literature/book industry

@Mike Steele,
You're absolutely right, and at least Kelly isn't burning them!

Me too, Deborah! Some of my first crafting as a newlywed - Christmas of 1968!
I remember making those trees as well. We would also use the old TV guides.

Agree with your comment it's not a Bible so people don't have to watch
@@lindadodson1586 That's beautiful

What a fantastic idea.
@GRACE Haught, lovely idea, and I hope you enjoy making them!
That's really cute! People can be weird about the simplest things. You paid for the book, you had every right to use it that way!

I remember making these out out craft paper in school when I was a child long ago and gave it to my mom for Christmas. Thanks for the wonderful memory.
Another awesome diy thanks Kelly beautiful
Kelly your always gonna find people who don’t look at things the same way as you, that’s on them !! You do what makes you happy 🥰🥰🥰
Love it! But, knowing me, I would try twisting some fairy lights with the rope.
Same here.
Love the fairy light idea😊
YES!!!!! same!
What's not to love. It's cute and very budget friendly. These would also make great package toppers. For those who are worried about destroying a book you could always source damaged books from the library or neighborhood bookstore. Thanks Kelly
I love this idea- as a package topper.
I love going to thrift stores and buying Bibles, Hymnals, then crafting with them. Thank you :)
What a great job you have done as a mom. Kayla not only looks like you, she has your great sense of humor too. Best to you both.

That's cute! I use old books for art journaling, and painting. Much better to use them for art than recycle or throw them away!
Well stated Kelly. We all need to take a step back and respect people for their differences in opinions. Love the simplicity of the garland.
It reminds me of the old fashioned decorations that my grandparents used to make for Christmas. They used all kinds of things they had around the house to make their Christmas special. I would love to see you do some ornaments using the same influence. Love the country style.

I love using book pages for projects!! I can’t wait to make one this weekend!!! ❤️
I love the vintage look it gives for the page trees.
hI Kelly! I love this book tree garland! I definitely plan on making this! You mentioned the stockings, you could actually mix the shapes with trees, stockings, stars etc.. but for the simplicity of it, I LOVE the trees! It could stay up all winter long! Take care and stay safe! Blessings~

This project turned out so cute! I agree - it’s simple and elegant.
Really sweet. I see using pages from book as recycling. It is much better than a burn pile!
I can't wait to start this book project. I have so many books. Now I can craft them and get more books to read!
Kelly I'm just a country girl from TN; and your crafts feed my soul. Odd thing to say. I'm in UT now but your crafts take me home. Keep those twine bows coming !
I love that garland. We made paper Christmas trees using Readers Digest
back when I was 8 years old. Some thrift stores sell books just for using as crafts. You can make garland for any holiday.
This is really pretty Kelly! I repurpose old and new books all the time for lots of stuff, especially journaling! ♥️
I really like this idea. You were right, the berry garland was the perfect addition.

What a simple yet elegant holiday DIY,Kelly. You are the most creative person I know. Thanks so much for sharing all of your ideas with the world.
I did something similar, but used antique gold acrylic paint to burnish the edges. Used a red berry garland to wrap my sisal twine as well. Turned out great to gi with my gild and red decorations in the house and on Christmas tree. Great tutorial, honey. Keep up the fantastic videos! Much love!
The Garland turned out beautiful. I personally would have used an old magazine or newspaper. This was a great DIY. Thanks Kelly for the inspiration.
I love making diys from books. They are beautiful ❤❤❤
Love the garland and there are lots of possibilities with this craft!! Thank you for your beautiful mind!
That is so darn pretty. I love the antiqued look . Bless you.
Live it. I made stars and used tiny lights with the berry garland. Got a lot of compliments.

Very beautiful! If people have a problem with using a book, they can used newspaper instead. But I do agree with you, Kelly. TFS!
The paper towel actually looked really cool from distressing the trees! Cute diy!
I remember my mom and aunts using readers digest for Thanksgiving projects. Fold tand fan them out like a turkey and spray them and use for center pieces.
That would look so pretty with a string of fairy lights.
The book trees were adorable. The fact that the trees were repurposed from a book, actually makes them more cool. I was really glad that you did not paint over the pages so that people could see the tree was made from a book.
I Love it, I think it's very farmhouse country. The idea can be used for every holiday.
So love this, and you can do stocking ,santas, leaves, bells anything, like you said and kids can help thank you stay safe
Even though I'm a book lover, I think this is just awesome!! It's not like you're cutting up a 1st edition & you could even use TV guides or anything like that! And I love the red berries!! :)
I love repurposing books into crafts! This turned out so cute! I loved the add on of the DT garland too!! 👍
Love love love it. I must say. I am crafting for the first time in my life. Thank you for inspiring me. God bless you . Hope all is well. Thanks

This would also look great using an old song book. So cute! Love it!
This is one of the cutest garlands I have seen! Definitely going to give it a try.
There are a lot of different crafts using books. They can be bought at thrift stores and you will be saving them from the landfill. Your garland is adorable.
This might be my favorite project ever!!
At my Dollar tree I seen some of the books they have and believe me you're doing the author a favor by using their book in a craft.
Beautiful. I agree, the garland was just what it needed.
Thanks for sharing ❤
Tiny fairy lights along the twine would look great too...
Love this so rustic and gorgeous
That looks like a fun craft I would like to do. I do agree with you to recycle books as well. This craft puts that book to a better use than for it to end up in a garbage dump. The pages from the book is the right idea paper to use for a rustic farmhouse look. Ideas are endless! By using color paper, stock paper, Christmas whapping paper, etc. Have a wonderful day 🍂🌾🍃
I love this garland! It turned out really cute!
I think I'd add a touch of green chalk to the trees. They are adorable ! Ty

I love books! I love crafting with them and I love the look of old books. I enjoy your DIY’s with books, carry on my friend.❤️
Beautiful way to use old books. I love it. Thank you. I'm loving your videos! So glad I found your channel.
Love it! Gonna make a couple for my living room and one for my sisters! They will love them too! Thank you Kelly!!
That garland is beautiful i love it im so going to try people need to worry about whats going on in the world and around them not so much about a book..stay safe thank uou for sharing
Absolutely adorable. I never would have thought of that.
That turned out great Kelly! I love book crafts and do at least one tutorial every year using them! Thanks for the idea!!
They are so pretty happy crafting all
I might have to do a snowmen one. This is so cute too..
This is so cute. You could even glue them together and make a stand up one, sorta like the bird cages out of books!! ❣️📖
OMG! I LUV THIS!...and I'm so burnt out on a lot of the 'farmhouse stuff. U are right...less IS more.
Hands down one of my new favorite creations from your channel. Love it
