  • This cast on is similar to using a magic ring in crochet, making it appear as if you started from a pinhole! The trick is to cast on into a bigger ring and pull tight when you are done.

Yours is by far the best and clearest technique for doing the pinhole. Thanks for the illustrations. You are a knitter and teacher.

my Grandma taught me this when I was just a little girl. Knitting is my passion now and I have been struggling with tubular cast on and all of those different ways was just confusing me until tonight when it was suggested Emily Ocker pinhole like in crochet and I realized that I did indeed know how to do this.

Thank you for making this so clear.I spent an entire evening watching other videos on how to do this and I nearly gave up. Your video is the first video that made any sense.

OMG, you explain so well! I am working on my first Musselburgh, the cast on was terrible! I tried about 8 times. I did eventually accepted the best of the bad and did make it look okay. Now I am almost finished. I am going to practice, then on to the next one. I think I really understand it now. I think I was missing the yarn over bind off kind of part.

Another great tutorial. I'm getting ready to knit a musselburgh hat and it uses this cast-on.

How do you like the Prim needles? Working well? Value?

I really like the Prym ergonomic double points, and didn’t think I would- I like pointy needles, but the “hook tip” bulbs on the end are fantastic. Can’t beat the value as they are often also the most cost effective needles we carry in the shop :)

How do you keep the hole closed? I made a blanket using this method, wove the end and it still came apart at the center. It's cute but not funcrional for items washed or worn.

Hi there, apologies for the delay in reply- I would use the tail after I’m further away with my knitting and stitch across the hole a few ways to ensure it stays closed (threading my tail yarn on a tapestry needle) before weaving my end in securely.
