The temple (pura in Balinese) is built at the edge (ulu) of a 70 meter high cliff or rock (watu) projecting into the sea.[2][unreliable source] In folklore, this rock is said to be part of Dewi Danu's petrified barque.[1]
Though a small temple was claimed to have existed earlier, the structure was significantly expanded by a Javanese sage, Empu Kuturan in the 11th Century. Another sage from East Java, Dang Hyang Nirartha is credited for constructing the padmasana shrines and it is said that he attained moksha here, an event called ngeluhur ("to go up") locally. This has resulted in the temple's epithet Luhur.[1
Bali is such a great island. I had the chance to explore it for two weeks, and couldn't believe the diversity. Kuta for parties, Sanur for resorts, Ubud for the spirit, and basically anywhere in the water for diving. We caught this performance of Kecak, and traditional Balinese dance and Uluwatu (or Monkey) Temple. Over the years, it's changed a bit. Now part theatre, part fire, and part culture... It's quite a fun show. I tried to capture some of the craziness, but it left us all saying Chak Chak Chak for days.

The first time I saw this dance at this temple, was around 40 years ago. The dancers were mostly over 40 and they were far more passionate, as it was not a true tourist trap at that time. The dancers are keeping the tradition alive, but the passion is gone.

This is an authentic Kecak dance? Even the story is altered here. Commercialization and entertainment seem to be the moto. There are better performances in UBUD (more traditional), at 1)Dalem Ubud Temple.

What is this ritual for?
It was created for spiritual and cultural purposes. In the beginning, middle, and end of the chants there are praises and prayers to the Creator of life. Meanwhile, the dancers are telling part of the Ramayana story. You can look that up yourself ⚘

NOPE!! Balinese gamelan and dances are uniquely Balinese. Almost no hints of Indian musical arrangements, style, and dance gestures idioms in Balinese traditional music and performance. THe one which is brought from India is just hinduism and the story (ramayana), with a lot of adaptation to local pre-Hindu beliefs and traditions.
