  • 2570 miles, 286.1 hours - This video shows how to service the spark arrester on a Honda Rancher, Honda Foreman, or Honda Rubicon, according to the factory-provided owner's manual.
    I Iove my 2016 Honda Rancher 4x4 DCT EPS. This is the 92nd video of this machine in action on my UA-cam channel. It has been a total pleasure to own and ride since we bought it new in December of 2015 from Western Honda in Scottsdale, AZ. Western gave us the best out-the-door price in the state, on the model we wanted.

    My spark arrester fell apart on me. Pulled it out and took a hacksaw and cut it off. Purchased a sink drain screen from the dollar store and welded it over the inside of the muffler tip. Cheaper than the $160 one from Honda, will last longer too.

    Nice video. The first time I went to do this on my 14 Rancher, I could not get the arrester bolt out for anything. I ended up having to take a torch to the bolt to heat it up and then I was able to get it out but I had then ruined the top part so you couldn't get a wrench on it. I had to buy a new bolt at the dealer. I put anti-seize on the new bolt so hopefully that doesn't happen again.

      Thanks, Wayne. I'm not sure why they would be different, but mine came out just fine. I supposed yours may have had more age on it before you attempted? Either way, the anti-seize is smart.

    Most of the plugs are actually brass if you look closely. So their is not to much need in worrying about rust

      Cool, I was not aware that they are brass.

    Mine seems stuck on 2020 foreman. So if you're looking at the exhaust you pull towards you (CCW) to losen? My exhaust is hot so maybe it expanded a bit or something. I'm going to have to buy a new as I've dinged up the edges pretty bad trying to get it loose.

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  3 роки тому

      Bummer. It does loosen counter clockwise. I hope you can get it off!

    You should get a big gun eco system for your rancher they sound really good on ranchers!

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  7 років тому +5

      You know, I may do something like that down the road. But, here's my concern...I love to ride out into the forest and watch deer/elk/antelope herds. This thing is quiet enough that they sometimes do see me or hear me from a distance. I think I want to keep the noise down for that reason.

    • @rancherman4205

    Love your videos man! I recently purchased a 2019 rancher! I need to know where you got your license plate holder??
    Thanks

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  5 років тому +1

      I'm glad they're helpful! Congrats on your new 2019 Rancher. I would love to have one myself. So I did my own license plate holder by purchasing two of these rubber covered mounts from the hardware store that are shaped like the letter P. Then I bought the right size of bolt and nut to hold the plate on. I made sure the straps where the right diameter for the rear rack. It worked awesome.

    Why would you have to do this? And what's the benefit of doing it? (Still new to atv's)

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  7 років тому +3

      There is a sort of screen in the exhaust system that the exhaust gasses must pass through. That screen is to stop (or arrest) any sparks that could ignite a fire. That screen can build up carbon deposits that slow the flow of the exhaust and hurt engine performance. Following this procedure is supposed to eliminate or clean out those carbon deposits off the spark arrester. Did that help?

    when you use the electric shift do you let off the throttle to shift or not and have you had any problems with it downshifting?

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  7 років тому +1

      Howdy Kevin. I generally DO let off the throttle to shift, when I'm in ESP mode. However, there are times when I'm running along with no load on the drivetrain (like low-speed, not speeding up or maybe just slowing down a little) and I'll shift without letting up. But the throttle is only barely cracked under those circumstances.
      On 3 occasions (in 2,570 miles) I've had it give me the " - " on the dash. All three times have been the same: I was in 2nd gear, in ESP mode, I was completely stopped, and I shifted down to 1st gear with the button while the TIRES WERE NOT MOVING. All three times, it did eventually go into first gear, and I found it would slip into first if I just let off the brakes so the tires rolled forward or backwards, and the last time I actually hopped off real quick and pushed it forward a few inches and it slipped into first. To me, this is nothing I will complain about, because it's such a small thing, in almost 290 hours of riding, it really hasn't affected my experience on the machine. Motorcycles never like to changes gears unless the tires are in motion, even just barely. So I'm deliberate about shifting gears when the tires are in motion. However, in DCT AUTO mode, this has never happened - no issues with shifting whatsoever. I think these Ranchers are practically flawless, based on my experience. Hope this helps.

      @averagerednek8446 7 років тому +1

      nevertoooldtohavefun yea I'm real happy with mine too...same thing happened to me too with the - on the dash I thought I downshifted maybe too fast and didn't give the trans enough time to shift into gear or something...thanks for the reply and keep up the vids!

    What kind of oil did you put on the spark arrestor. Was it engine oil?

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  4 роки тому

      I did not put any oil in/or the spark arrestor. I guess I'm not sure what you're referring to. But I'm happy to answer...tell me what part of the video it is.

      @@SouthwestORV He means when you put oil on the bolt and the threads..

    • @kingcodeman1992
      @kingcodeman1992 4 роки тому +1

      Any kind of engine oil will work. He most likely rubbed his fingers in oil and rubbed it on the threads. It will help with corrosion on the threads so it isn't seized on next time you take it off. The rear especially the exhaust gets hit with alot of wetness due to the tires spinning everything it runs through.

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  4 роки тому

      Thanks Cody, yes that's correct. I just wetted the threads with oil to fight corrosion. I keep old quarts of expired 30 weight oil around for stuff like this.

    I have a 2012 Honda rancher 420. It has been running fine and all of the sudden it started backfiring and running rough and died on me leaving me stranded. I towed it home and when I got home it started right up fine and ran fine for a little bit and it did the same thing again. Will this fix that issue or what else can it be?

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  3 роки тому +1

      That is puzzling. I don't think the exhaust is the issue, but I could be wrong. I suspect it has something to do with a sensor, or the fuel injection...perhaps fuel pump? But I'd recommend you ask the question on the "Honda ATV Forum". Those guys know it all. Mine never gave me any issues, so I don't know how to help you. Good luck!

    • @ScarFace405_
      @ScarFace405_ 3 роки тому +1

      Yea I just did what you did in this video and it didn’t help..... I let it idle for about 5 mins raving it up from time to time. Occasionally it will back fire. Other than the back firing it sounded good no issues but all of a sudden it starts running rough and stalls out. If I let it cool down I can repeat the same process again.

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  3 роки тому

      Dang, I'm sorry amigo. Did you try the Honda ATV Forum? If you take a video of what it's doing then post it there, or even just make a post and tell everybody what's going on, they'll have ideas for you.

    • @ScarFace405_
      @ScarFace405_ 3 роки тому +1

      So I drained out the gas and added new non ethanol fuel and I think that solved the issue. It has not died on me again. I also added some seafoam cleaner in the gas.

    • @SouthwestORV
      @SouthwestORV  3 роки тому
