Randy was musical guest for the ill-fated SNL live episode filmed at Mardi Gras in New Orleans in 1977. But if you mean people actually paying attention to his music while playing, and not in a drunken stupor, yes this crowd is probably it.
The bass player with Maria Muldaur's band is one of the most important bass players of jazz in the 20th century, (formerly married to Ella Fitzgerald) Ray Brown.
Hi, @Midnightspecialtvshow! Good to see you in the chat, Mr. Sugarman! Thank you for gracing us with your presence and I hope you drop in more often. 🥰
What a gift this is: Randy Newman at a crucial early moment in his career. His masterpiece "Good Old Boys" had been released earlier in the month; this was clearly a promotional push for that record. Considering Newman's complicated feelings about public appearances in those days, I wonder if his marketing team had to do some arm twisting to get him to agree to this gig.
Ry was originally associated with Blues music but he was probably best known for his late 70s hit Lido Shuffle. Used to hear it at the discotheque at the time really often. Elvin Bishop was similar around the same time. Again, he was associated with Blues, but then came Fooled around and fell in love, which was not what you would expect from him.

A lot of folks don't realilize Randy originally did "Mama Told Me Not to Come" and not Three Dog Night (Randy's came out in '70 and Three Dog Night's version later in the year, although the first performer was Eric Burdon for his solo album in '66).
I love these repostings. This is an especially great show. Hopefully and get around to posting in the timestamps for the songs. I like to come back sometimes and watch this certain songs Edit: watching the show, I kept thinking it's so amazing the audience is sitting there and really listening to the music. And there's all these real musicians on stage playing. Even though this was the rock and roll era I don't know that any of this music would be class in that category. Yet everybody I knew watched it, and there's obviously a great age distribution in the audience. So I wonder is it even possible to produce a show like this anymore? Are there really respected artist from different genres who get out there and play without all the hoopla that seems to have to be included in modern performance. I know there are plenty of great acts out there, touring. They play smaller halls and don't have the insane amount of production that certain artists bring to the table. Maybe somebody will figure out a way to get it done and expose those people to larger audiences the way the midnight special was able to do with programs like this one.
