    Nice one Dave! I especially liked the zoom comparisons. Our Tamron 17-28 & 28-200 are by far our fav lenses and I would be confident using nothing else (i do love a fast primes though) :)

    Great review, nice to see the 70 and 300mm comparison. I want this for landscape, and I was worried about the darker aperture. It was either this or the 70-180 f/2.8 but not sure that has the reach I need

    This was an excellent review. And I agree that stabilization isn't necessary for this kind of lens -- for video use a tripod and for stills shorten shutter speed & boost ISO.

      The 70-180 is more than twice the price due to the 2.8 aperture. It's an excellent lens but quite honestly the bokeh doesn't look significantly different in many situations and you have half the reach of the 70-300. It's the nature of the zoom range.

    Or 70-180 Tamron Sony e mount

    David, how fast was the AF speed? When you went from one subject to another was the AF fast and accurate? I had the Sony version and was disappointed with it so sold it. I was waiting for Tamron or Sigma to come out with their version and try again.

    Great review David. But I don’t know, looks quite less sharp compared to both my Tamron 28-75mm and 17-28mm. It’s good for its price indeed though. How’s the AF for video by the way?

      It is sharp except at 70mm f4.5 on the corner, if you go f5.6 at this focal it should be good. Above that focal it is sharp. I ordered it. Anyway i will use mainly this lens from 80 to 300mm. The advantage is compare to a 28-200 or 28-75 is this 300mm at full frame so it means 900mm maximum with super 35 x1.5 and clearzoom x2 combined. I have the 17-28 and soon the 70-300. Which are the extremes focals that i use most. Maybe in one year i could get the 28-200 for harsh condition scenario where changing the lens os not possible.

      @@chopster01 looking forward to a comparison as well. I know right away that the optical IS is a must for video at those focal lengths. I tired holding my a9 steady with my Tamron 28-200 (at 200) and even with the built in Sony IS, the footage was completely unusable. For photo on the other hand, I'm guessing the Tamron will be an excellent option.

    I considered selling my 100-400 mm GM for this, but I'm too worried for diffraction on higher apertures. Instead I think I'll get the Tamron 28-200 mm for travel, and leave my 28-75 mm at home. But I'll wait until my wife orders a travel again after covid19. Then I do at least have some longer reach at travels, as 75 mm is a little too little, and the GM 100-400 is too large for travels in my opinion.

    • @DavidOastler

      Yes it is too big

    • @CC-gt3ro
      @CC-gt3ro 3 роки тому +1

      I think it is the right decision i will do the same. I have 17-28 f2.8 (outstanding. The best) i have ordered the 70-300 for wildlife and landscape (nearly 900mm possible on sony a7c) and in a year i will get the 28-200 for travel (outstanding and practical in harsh conditions where changing the lens is not recommended, like super cold or humidity condition, sea beach with sands,..) all three lens would be less than 1.5kg...and sony a7c is 509g. So full kit with 3 lens amd azden smx30 mono/stereo microphone for around 2kg. What other package beat it which covers 17-300mm fullframe?

    I cant believe it doesn't have the VC OSS. They used to complain that the 28-200 didn't have that, and that did f5.6 at 200mm. I would want to see a long reach lens with VC from tamron, I guess they had filed a patent for a 200-800 or in that range. would like to see it manifest in reality.

      Tamron's philosophy currently seems to be to focus on price, size and weight, all of which means it's unlikely to see stabilization in their lenses. You'll probably need to wait for Sigma if you want 3rd party stabilized telephotos

    • @youuuuuuuuuuutube
      @youuuuuuuuuuutube 4 роки тому +1

      As others have said, it's all about giving options. If you want OSS then there's the Sony 70-300, it's more expensive, double the price, but it has OSS. If you want cheaper / smaller / lighter, then the Tamron.

    • @bioliv1

      Almost all Canon lenses have OS, but they're huge. These small lenses you can use on a small travel tripod. My GM 100-400 is horrible on my travel tripod, I have to bring my old, big oak tripod. That's why I considered selling it for this lens, but I don't like the diffraction of it, I think it kicks in too early. So I guess I keep my GM still.

    • @anulearntech
      @anulearntech 4 роки тому +1

      I cant quite digest the argument that optically stabilized lenses need to b heavy. The new Nikon 70-300 APSC lens comes in 2 varieties, one with VR and other without it, the difference is a few grams and few dollars. the VC module is a small floating lens module with electronics around it. it shouldn't weigh or cost more. I think Tamron hasnt designed the current set of lens lineup for e mount to have VC integrated. theyll probably release a new premium grade lineup with VC and better build and more $$$$.
