Just bought the UAD after using the waves plugin for years and it is ridiculous how different they sound and operate. Having the same settings visually doesn't sound similar at all in comparison, even the VU-Meter is completely different and confusing. It is clear that UA developed their plugin in great detail to the original, waves just feels like a cheap somewhat fast comp now. For example the transient of a snare drum gets ducked at about 9 o clock on the attack dial with the UAD Plugin, where waves bluey only starts at about 15 o clock to catch the transient. It feels like a completely different comp!
Edit: I've just been testing and comparing for another hour and its seems like the VUs both work, knobs like Input and Output are similar, but attack is definetly different. So let's talk numbers. The Manuals claim: Attack time Waves is 0.8ms to "less then 0.05ms" and UA is 0.8ms to 0.02ms. BUT when i put a Level Meter behind these plugins, both set to attack (and release) max and same input/output/compression (-7d gain reduction), it's clear to see that the waves plugin MISSES the transient. I send the same mono snare drum hit with the signal peaking at -6.3db through both comps and the RMS went from -25 to -22 on both Waves and UA, BUT the peak from UA went DOWN to -6.9db where the peak of Waves went UP to -4! So the transient gets through the waves plugin which shouldn't happen when the Comp is basically set top limiting settings.
Edit of the edit: I've put a Link in the description of my "Jazz but..." video if you want to take a look at the waveforms. I tried to put a link to the screenshots here, but youtube deleted the comment. I feel like I got cheated on, this shouldn't be allowed with these plugins sounding so different, waves definetly lost my trust. The waveforms speak for themselves. Hope this helps.

Waves Rev A is nowhere close to UAD. And since Pulsar and UAD sound similar, it makes me think Waves are really off. What were they thinking?
Uad so beautiful sound
agreed! the UAD Rev A is my favorite of the bunch
