Apple has plans to create americas first super app. Where it has FaceTime, iMessage, apple wallet, and Siri available even for android users they will just have to pay a small fee. They are just waiting to reveal with updated Siri and AI plans this summer.

So in the US we never needed to download other apps to text over Wi-Fi, we could just send as many SMS as we want. True, when 3G was released, some operators already supported video calls. It just wasn't mainstream yet. The price was very expensive back then.
