This is so so so much informative for someone like me who is just getting into portraits photography and is on budget and wants to get professional results using only small speedlites. Thank You so much sir for such a great tutorial. Learned alot from this today. Edit - I really hope this video gets a million views and I am eagerly waiting for part 2 and all the rest of the parts.
Nice video, very informative and presented in a way that any beginners can understand and take great shots, well done sir (retired wedding photographer)
I have searched a long time for easy to understand flash tutorials to no avail until now! Your tutorial is amazing and easy to follow. I love the show and tell diagrams too. Thank you very much.
Ed you are one of the very few that explains things in plain English. All of your samples and explanations are precise and to the point, any person that watches your videos will be able to takeaway very good educational information on various lighting setups that they can practise for themselves and see the results. Great tutorials very easy to understand and no useless babel like some use to make they'er videos look worthwhile. Please keep up the excellent work. Ed
Ed, You are a natural instructor. You provide clear and methodical explanation, realistic solutions to common issues, and provide extensive information with lots good visual examples. I have learned a lot from your channel particularly debunking myths of flash photography. I love this video and look forward to the rest of the series. Thank you for insight and effort.
Man, you are a good guy. With the valuable information you gave me for “free” I feel comfortable coming to you for paying lessons. Dude you are totally cool in my book. Thanks.
You’ve done it again! Another instructional masterpiece! Every thing was perfectly explained with wonderful examples. You don’t have to spend a fortune for any strobes, either mono blocs or speedlights to get everything you need. My only 'problem' is having to manually adjust my monos, but I can take my time and set up one light at a time as I mainly shoot still life and corporate headshots for the charity I’m involved with. I also have a friend who helps me. They were cheap and have lasted me about 4 years up to now, and no one has ever said to me "I can tell you use cheap lights”. If I need HSS, ETTL, FCS, RCS, Multi or a flash with a t1 duration of 1/8000 (I’ve never needed it even for pouring drinks shots) I have my speedlights. There are some very inexpensive speedlight modifiers like Selens usually give good quality. I think MagMod etc are overpriced for most people’s needs, but the cheapest, especially filters, can give strange anomalies. You are a great photographer, far better than I could hope to be, but you are an exceptional instructor and educator. There are people on UA-cam who don’t have a tenth of your knowledge and talent charging for less than you have given for free today. Jay P Morgan from Slanted Lens has also done a great free course on light, but that’s more about the cube, cylinder and ball approach and understanding the theory of light. May I wish you and yours a very merry Christmas and a brilliant 2019. Most of all though thank you for all your brilliant, informative, thought provoking videos over the last year. Your channel is pure photography all about the image which is quite refreshing at times. And thank you for replying to so many of my over long comments!
Yes sir, You are a true teacher. This Flash Photography I have long been looking for. Your step by step instruction is what I find I wanted. I am really benefited. Thank you very much.- Somesh Roy Choudhury
Hi Ed, thanks a lot for sharing that much of knowledge about portrait photography with different light. It is the best I ever had seen on UA-cam and can't wait to see the next 3 modules.
Hi, At 17:46 I saw you used a wire. Do you have an idea to put the flash on a tripod with a wire ? (I bought a wire because I did not find the right trigger for my GX9)
I am not understanding why somebody disliked his video. if not interested, simply leave it. don't discourage him. if you want to learn the photography from the third party, you may need to spend lots and lots of money to learn from. if it is available on free of cost, then you will dislike it no...
Wow....amazing video. Showing not just what you tell us, but, images as well, allows us to truly train our eyes to "see" as we had not before. What to notice...may be subtle, but, if we don't know what to look for how can we improve? Thanks again!
Thank you Ed. It has been very usefull. Studied photography but after finished course still had a lot of theoretical and practical doubts about using flashes. Best regards from Palma de Mallorca.
Great video, especially for someone who recently bought a speedlight. I’m practicing your method of using TTL with manual camera settings. So far, so good. One question I have is can I change the ISO setting to brighten or darken the ambient light instead of the shutter speed? Thanks for the helpful series of videos.
Ed, please tell me how you would use flash zoom? How does this fit in with your technique? Thanks in advance =). Love your video....Learned a lot. I'm a new subscriber. thanks
It depends on how narrow or wide I want the flash illumination to be. In an umbrella I usually leave it at around 35-50. If I need a narrow beam with no modifier, then more like 80. Other than that, Zoom just correlates with the Lens you’re using when your flash is located on-camera. The flash can be used at 70 Zoom with a 70mm lens, etc.
Really well explained Ed. Thanks for putting these up. Don't know if there is a problem, but none of the 4 course modules are showing up in my subscriptions list.
Phil, I elected to turn off notifications for this series. I didn't want to inundate people with these, however, I'm finding out that a few people are still receiving notifications about some of these. In any event, thanks for watching!
Very good basic but comprehensive tutorial. All in a nutshell. Exactly the information I needed to refresh my notions about flash. Well organized materials. Dictated in clearly pronounced “New York” english. Two thumbs up! Subscribed to your channel. Thank you for the kind help you have given me with this excellent Flash Photography Course. Best wishes for a successful and healthy new year.
Hi Ed. Where should I rather control the flash compensation? At the camera button (Sony a6000), or in the speed light (godox TT685s)? Thanks in advance for your time.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌 may god bless you sir it was amazing tutorial and this is for free i can not believe it thanks sir i will do the same if i am ever in your position.

Why limit yourself to ttl? Are you afraid of a little math? trial and error?

all these dumb ads are ruining the viewer experience if you care...smh.. why do you need two five minute ads back yo back???
Concise instruction, effective teaching, easily the most helpful treatment of this subject on UA-cam to date. Live long and prosper.
Thanks, David!

Hi Ed, thanks a lot for sharing that much of knowledge about portrait photography with different light. It is the best I ever had seen on UA-cam and can't wait to see the next 3 modules.
I’m guessing FEC would have to be added if bouncing the light off say a wall in TTL because of the added distance the light is travelling?
Hi,
At 17:46 I saw you used a wire.
Do you have an idea to put the flash on a tripod with a wire ? (I bought a wire because I did not find the right trigger for my GX9)
You are simply amazing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I have learnt and benefited a lot from your lessons.

Excellent! I’m glad it helped.
At 09:56, AUTO WHITE BALANCE set to FLASH is new to me. Also setting the Speedlight to TTL mode for studio pictures. You are a great instructor to me.
Many thanks to your support in flash photography
I can't imagine an ISO of 800 at 1.8 creating too much "Noise" though
Especially with modern dslr like Nikon and mirrorless cameras like fujifilm
Instead of TTL can't I just use Manual mode?
Excellent tutorial! Thanks
good job! We learn a lot. Thank you.
Thanks
Please how do I get the mini soft box?
