Most single handed weapons can outrange the goblins, try swinging while backing up, and try to get an idea for spacing.
You also move faster in the direction you are facing. A lot of players after they hit the goblin will turn away and walk for half a second, then turn around as they swing again to keep far enough away.
I recommend checking out the squire at the merchants tab, he lets you choose your starting equipment and start with healing potions, bandages, protection potions and a lot more

In the main menu they have a "Knight" feature. This is tool that brings in an veteran player who will give you advice/guidance on how to play the game. The devs know this game has a strong learning curve.....so they created this for new players.

​@Kenpachi_White_flash_99 good luck dude you should watch a quick guide this game is super complicated and learning stuff like waving your mouse to move your torso and head out of hits is something impossible in other games its really difficult at first but so fun when you know what youre doing its a crazy game i hope you enjoy

The times you felt the sheild wasnt working, you were to close to the enemy so their arm was either inside your character(ignoring the shield) or it went over/around the shield
