If you’ve ever wondered how to make trance music like @arminvanbuuren, @ferrycorsten, or @tiesto, in this trance tutorial I show you some techniques you can use in your own music.
We cover idea generation, trance chord progressions, sound design and mixing, and I’ll share with you some techniques I have only shared in my premium courses.
How to produce progressive trance or uplifting trance uses much of the same fundamental techniques - just applied in different styles.
Personally, I love Anjunabeats and producers like Oliver Smith and Grum, but if you want to produce like Armin or any of the other big guys, you can apply the same techniques.
This covers how to make trance in Ableton, but - again - you could do this just as easily in FL Studio or Logic X.
We cover:
01:46 - Chords
07:39 - Stab Rhythm
09:50 - Sound Selection & Layering
13:27 - Reverb
14:18 - Transient Shaper & Limiter
15:22 - Pads
17:52 - Bass
20:50 - Sidechain ducking
22:12 - Sub Bass
24:24 - Mixing
27:45 - Melody
29:11 - The Finished Result

I'm amazed at how this sounds better than typical modern trance. Thank you for doing an old school Anjunabeats style, I hope that up and coming artists who learn from this will revive that style.
You're welcome!
Dude exactly, the "trance" now sucks so bad...wtf happened?
Mainstream money.
If I had to guess, modern trance 'sucks' mostly due to two things: Stagnation and Standardisation.
Stagnation is from the elitism. The few people screaming 'that's not trance' anytime someone does something different. Some diehard elitists might even dislike this video since it's under 138 bpm. It's part of the reason "Progressive House" became a separate thing. It pretty much started as slowed down trance. Either way, elitism only prevents the sound from evolving. Granted, I don't like a lot of the new stuff either. Some of it is just 'big room trance.' New shouldn't come at the expense of the old.
Standardisation is a problem in all of _'EDM.'_ Each genre tends to have a formula and everyone just follows it with little variation. 'Uplifting Trance' is usually considered a faithful style, but most tracks are all starting to sound the same because they all have similar structures, composition, sound selection, and so on. The style is just overly standardised because it's so faithful to a particular sound.
I started listening to anjunabeats this year. And was inspired to make music because of it. Im gonna try to make this type of trance just because I love it!
I absolutely love the euphoric feeling trance music gives you. Thanks to you I now have a better idea of how to put together my own trance music! Cheers mate, keep putting together these brilliant videos. Also really love your enthusiasm in these videos, it really comes across well and makes it a joy to watch! Stay safe
You are very welcome, and thanks for watching! :)
Proper late 90's trance head, loving this! And it's year old
I don't like Trance music .... I bloody love it haha.. omg I just watched that Armin van Buuren Ramsterdam remix video where he is almost in tears, and I'm mind blown .. bring on the trance!! Amen!
This really eliminated my beginner fear of trance production. Awesome tips! Thank you for sharing 30mins of your life!
Happy to help!
Why fear? There is nothing that could hurt you or that you could lose. Unless you are dreaming of being a pro. Then you have to embrace that fear of failure.

Excellent video. As a beginner myself, I appreciate the fact that you actually walk through all of the steps and explain things plain and simple in a way that's easy to follow. Even while keeping the third-party effects/plugins to a relative minimum, the end product still sounds amazing. Looking forward to seeing more of your tutorials in the future!
Thanks very much! Glad you found it valuable :)

@@evyborov Works fine for me comrade :)
Where are you from & can you teach me or sell me a song for my 1st single as Butterfly Above the Clouds Trance DJ. in Mexico.
Right all I want to know is
How does finding the actual sounds work? What Im saying is if I had the access to these sounds I could put them together very nicely. I don't have the patience for Google
I loved the beginning.. I accept these tunes into my heart and my soul....!!!!!......lol... VERY GOOD.
😆 #Truth
What genre do you want me to over in my next video? Let me know in the comments! The most voted for wins 😎
Mk piano house sort of stuff, simple but effective 😁
@@Swiftopher755 Oh yeah! That's my jam. Got a new remix coming out soon in that style :)
Great stuff 😁
I would love to see how those deep dubstep artists (e.g. Kryptic Minds, J:Kenzo) mix and layer their bass sounds. How do they get away with three different basses and how do they achieve that classic 3D sound from basses moving forward and backwards? Is it some kind of voodoo magic!? I'm more of a techno producer, but I'm still mystified and would love to learn more about their techniques.
By the way, I wanted to thank you Will for the amazing content you're putting out! I started following your channel and subscribed to your mailing list about a month ago, and it's crazy how many great ideas I have come up with ever since. I need to deeply thank you for that. Cheers!!!

Trance gives you that feeling and I love it, thank you!
More trance tutorials, mate. I love your work flow. Great teacher! I appreciate your time and knowledge.

Thanks for watching and for the kind words of support :)
I am kind of shocked that I discovered your channel just right now!!! Now I ave to go through each of your videos :)
Keep bringing mate!!!
Welcome aboard! Please share them around as it's hard to grow a following :)
What a legend...the delivery was thoroughly entertaining!
Vocals at the end were awesome. Fit perfect.
We need the full song. That's freaking awesome
Thanks!

Hell yeah! Another great one,Will. Thanks for sharing
Been watching your vids all week, love your take on theese different generes. Thanks alot!
Glad you like them!
That was pretty awesome. You ended with a great sounding track. This is great trance music!
Really GREAT production on this and getting the frequencies in the right place.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed :)
Man, I loved this video and I loved this song! It really feels uplifting! Thanks you so much for teaching us that! Please do more videos like that :)
It's really nice when you show you're actually feeling your song!
Thank you! Will do!
Awesome tune! Great tutorial too. As a kid and teen I always dreamed of being able to produce EDM. I took piano lessons but could never find any resources in actually learning how trance is created! Thank God for UA-cam and tuts like this. I’m thinking heavily about reigniting the dream 😎👍🏻
Go for it! It's a lot of fun :)
BEAUTIFUL TUNE!! Trance will always make you sing and dance mate :D
Thanks! Couldn't agree more!
oh man, the stabs were cool, but the moment you showed the Delay effect at 25:00, that in context with everything else felt like a huge element of trance was demystified for me.
Thank you for such a banger!
You young boys are lucky, I’ve been into Trance music since i was probably 6 years old YES that is true 6 years old and I was crying all the time to anyone who goes to the near city to bring me some records to listen to. Unfortunately no one cares!
Many years after i wanted to be a Trance Dj but again no one cares no one supported me at all not even my country where such a thing is considered dumb and weird!
Here i am an old man remembering my dreams in the past but still and i will always enjoy Trance music.
@0:24 the tune is so banging, even the Adobe Audition Icon at the bottom of the screen is dancing away 😂
Awesome video, awesome personality :D
I've just been inspired by this! Thank you for such an incredible video.
You're welcome, Julian, I am glad you liked it! 🙂🙌🏻
OMG You are amazing, love trance
Thanks so much Will! Great to see and it looks like you had some fun.
You're welcome! I did indeed :) 🕺 I think I'll continue this into a full track
@@EDMTips I was just thinking the same that you should make a full track out of this because it sounded cool already.
@@deadkeyz8075 Yeah, I'm going to. I'd like to run a little experiment, actually, about getting signed to a decent label (like Anjunabeats) without using any track record (so, no followers, and anonymous) and document the experiment.
@@EDMTips That would be very interesting to follow! And I believe many of your followers would agree :) I hope you decide to do that experiment and share your thoughts about the whole process.
I would be very intetested to follow the process also if it would not end up succesfully on the first try and if you'd try again, because that's where the real struggle is and many of us could easily relate to that.
I get it. Hope to listen to some of. Your work.
9:36 Alternativelya few ideas to save yourself this hassle:
- arpegiattor
- trance gate
- something like ShaperBox
Digging deep in the archive, can you add the link to this tutorials resources again? it seems to be missing. love your stuff / Peter
Nice one, Peter! Which resources do you mean exactly? The link to the pack is under the video
First video I've watched on making music in general! Always lived trance music, Ive always wanted to make the music that's in my head 😂 I'd really like to get into this... Maybe one day.
Go for it!
Love that piano sound. Ableton's grand piano is so OP, lol. I use Kontakt 5 for piano. GG man !
This is So Beautiful Piece man!
If we can add some reverb choir, it just even blows like anything!
I loved this session, Subscribed!!

I appreciate the heavy emphasis on stabs.
Great piano is make in the difference😍😍😍

that amazing video, trance is awesome, brings more videos related to trance
The template technique is such a genius idea and so simple, not sure why I've never thought of doing it. Thanks for the tip.
You're welcome!
A friend and I are doing a challenge in which we try to make a song or a bit of a song every week in a random genre picked and this week the genre is trance.
I guess you've just saved my week, lol.
That's an awesome challenge! Let me know how you get on!
@@EDMTips I'm not happy with the mix but I think overall the end result was kinda cool! I'll upload it to my channel in a couple of hours!
I used lots of tips you gave in this video and also in your free online webinar a couple of sundays ago!
I wish I didn't live in South America so I could afford the full course hahaha, maybe if I move to Europe next year haha
Banging tune! I DJ this music and interesting to see how it’s made. More difficult than I thought but you make it look easy.
THanks! Glad you enjoyed :)
Just came across this channel, downloaded your 30 EDM tips pdf and had a read. Great stuff! All very informative, I just wish I found your channel sooner. Hi from Australia :) Keep the content comin
Thanks for the support, and welcome aboard! I hope you are well and safe from those insane fires
Welp guess I'm pulling out FL again. Thanks for the bit of inspiration dude
You're welcome, glad it sparked up something again! 🙂
Thanks for the tutorial! It looks like you're using a Logitech webcam. If you open preferences, disable auto-focus and "low light compensation", your video will look 100000% smoother. Cheers!
Another great video, Will! And it looks like you have quite a bit of fun making it.
Thanks...I did! My passion for Trance is re-ignited 😎
Any genre you'd like me to cover in future?
Will, this is John from your master class. You know I love chill, trip-hop, and downtempo. If you wanted to give that genre a whirl I wouldn't complain! I'm sure I'd pick up a few gems along the way.
@@jl9205 Hi John! Great idea :) Any particular artists you're digging?

Well done. I love 90s trance more than any other kind of Music.
You started 25 years ago? Were you 1?! Great vid! I’m learning so much.
Wtf dude you're sick how are you so good at this???😱
In a word....practise!
@@EDMTips yes im really trying my best:)
@@malteknudsen2718 Keep going and don't give up! You can do it, too!
The piano really completed it. I am astounded. I'd love to learn music production, but I don't have any background and I don't understand any of the theory behind it (e.g. chords, progressions, etc.)
I own Serum and I do love certain aspects of it but I still use Sylenth1 most of all and have done it for many years. Instrument racks within Ableton, combined with fx racks can create amazing sounds too, analog bass, wavetable pads, and leads, operator stabs, and leads. I appreciate of course, most are drawn into getting latest VST to appeal to labels or what they think latest star producer is using, for the hobbyist there is certainly lots can be achieved within Ableton itself and older synths that are way less heavy on the CPU. Love the video!
Love your passion for it, its what it should be like :)
🙌
It seems like the drum loop is not in the starter kit - please include it, feels like it really holds back the tutorial
Good point! I'll include it in a future iteration!
@@EDMTips Is it included? I tried to find it just now when I decided to download your started pack since I love it so much (just a newbie but trying to make some nice stuff), but can't seem to find it.
Nice trance tutorial. Hello Will, can you please share the drum loop tutorial.
I can't wait to get started. My computer is coming!!
This is very inspiring! I'm going to try out that template technique.
Go for it!
Great video 🔥
Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it! 🙂🙌🏻
I have Serum, Sylenth and Ana 2.0 on my computer. I really prefer the latter two because of Serum's issues with RAM. I am looking at getting a PC with 32 or even 64gb RAM so I can make all the trance I want :)
We really need more Trance tutorials from you 🥺
Any particular artists or tracks you're digging at the moment?
@@EDMTips AVIRA is a great one, maybe also Tom Staar, they both really have a distinctive sound and you just know it's them whenever their tracks are played.
0:54 I have a perfect working Amiga 500 here 😉👍🏻
Nice 👍 Willing to give it away? 😉
@@EDMTips No mate, I am sorry, but I can help you to find another one sure 👍🏻
Really useful video, learnt a lot from this. Thanks man! 👌👍😎
Glad it was helpful! Any particular artists or tracks you're digging at the moment?
@@EDMTips I like all types of music. Currently trying to do something along the lines of hybrids unfinished symphony and also a dark trance track. Both are going quite well but I'm realising more and more with these tutorials that I don't know anything like as much as I thought I did. It's like I'm starting again almost.
I really enjoyed this tutorial. It broke me out of my old habits. I always seem to get stuck doing things a certain way and I always hit a wall. Thank you for sharing your style. Much appreciated!

Great video Will! I like to watch you writing/arranging things on the fly, especially the quick decision making with sounds etc, that's something I'll need to adapt myself too because it looks like very effective use of time! Oh, and I'll accept any genre for the next video :D

Hello! I have a huge request for you to advise me in choosing a midi keyboard for creating (writing) music at home in such styles (dance) as Trance, Uplifting Trance, Relax, Shill Out, Launge, Deep House, my favorite styles how many (49 or 61) keys and octaves will be enough for me for everything and also what is the key mechanics (synthesizer empty or piano full), here are the options from this or some kind of advice from you: 1) Alesis Q49 MKII; 2) M-AUDIO Keystation 49 MK3; 3) Nektar Impact LX61 +; ??? Thank you in advance. Looking forward to your reply!
great job!

I am bloody struggling to create a new tune now, and This video is quite helpful for me. Thank you so much!! Cheers from Japan:)
You're welcome!
You deserve way more subscribers man legendary tutorials
Glad you think so! Please share :)
Should try making meltrance music, its edm with more reverb and delay sound. Not much tutorial on this genre. Something like zac waters are making his music or caleb amir
Nice idea! Any particular tracks you're digging?
Hey thanks for the reply. Im always a big of caleb amir really thought that his track sound very unique and different. My most fav track would be Amir-Ping , Amir n NXTG- energi , Amir-sumatra(lift me up) , or even one of my fav is from Musk-careless. Just wondering how they are making this huge dark basslines/dark synth (echoing/delaying) haha. I really think this is the next big genre in the future. A good idea is to be a head start from others. Even will spark started going to this direction. Really appreciate the reply happy listening to the tracks

Love this video!
I wish you shared the hotkey you used at 9:45 to duplicate out that first eigth note chord pattern. ... Or it was just copy/paste. Was hoping there was some cool hotkey

a question regarding the application of the multi-band compressor on the pad (17:30).... what was the intention/aim here? the pad is full of frequency, so i can see that a MBC could be used over a standard compressor, fa sure.... but it would be good to have a little explanation regarding this. or perhaps something to cover a bit more in-depth in another tutorial? btw, thanks for these "how to make..." tutorials, they've made a massive impact on my level, especially with element layering.
