Yeah, despite the quality filming, explanation of process and outcome, I had trouble getting past all the filth! Evan a simple blow-off would have been a huge improvement and made for less work further into the project!
Makes it much nicer to work on - also I always think that if the internals are scrap you can at least make some money selling it on for spares that way.
That said, there’s very little - beyond no oil in the fuel - that kills these dead!

I was 10 when I was taught to clean everything on an engine /machine before pulling it apart, that was 60 years ago. I sat here shaking my head. Couldn’t take this video seriously.

I stopped burning ethanol 15 years ago. I leave fuel in small engines year round. After sitting for months with fuel in the tanks, they all start easily and run just fine.

Just found this channel extremely helpful. At 56 yo im a disabled vet who lives working on this stuff. ive gotten my bronze frim Stihl but have a long way to go. I keep 2nd guessing myself on everything and because i try to get everything perfectly done i get frustrated to easily. Great learning on this video thank you for sharing. You may have to start a pay channel for us that could ask 100 questions.

Hi Dr Mikey. Just curious. What is the procedure for getting stihl certified? Is there a course to take?
Getting certified for Stihl can only be done if you work for a Stihl Dealer. The bronze certification is done online through an internet portal. Silver is done in person at the Stihl distributor for your shops territory. Gold and above is done in person a Stihl's Virginia Beach Manufacturing Facility. I hope this helps.
Don’t give up. I am same as you just a couple years older. I go out and tinker on old Homelites. It keeps the mind going.
This is one of the best chainsaw repair videos I have seen! I think it is essential to remove the ethanol from small engine fuel, an easy thing to do, and a guarantee that the fuel system will not self destruct each season, why have we allowed this filthy stuff to be put in our fuel! Chris B.

Because Congress made sure that the corn growers and the petroleum suppliers could further stick it to us. A far less powerful fuel that decreases mileage, ruining rubber components and costing more money 😢. We loose! And that was back in the 70s it started as a temporary cure for the “fuel shortage “ that wasn’t. Big business strikes again 😢

And, they sure don't like us, do they? Doesn't bother me at all, however, for if they don't like you, it truly is a badge of honor. It means you're better than them, and doing something right.
I am in in aust. My local clog with gas station always gives me hassles when I mix 2 stroke using their fuel. Have to go a few miles further and get the pommy fuel which àlways mixes ok. Do not know what is different but several bad mixes and hassles have proved this. Sorry about the generic slang but I do not want to name these companies.

When I started in tree work the Gaffer had me strip down, clean and check the saw every day before we went home.
So bar and chain off, filter and plug out, look at the fuel filter. stood me well for 35 years and still at it. Thanks for the expose.
I never put a drop of ethanol fuel in any of my saws. Always non-ethanol fuel and Startron fuel treatment and you can leave fuel in for a year or more and all is golden.
If you are pumping from a single hose pump put a few gallons in a vehicle first! Otherwise you are pumping low grade ethanol poisen the guy ahead of you pumped! Ethanol is horrible stuff!

Good vid my friend. You did skip a few important points though that Id like to share. When the carb is off the machine, if you suspect low compression, now is the time to look through the port and inspect the one side of the piston and one side of the cylinder for scoring. Then remove the muffler, two bolts, and get the other side. Also, using the back flat side of a punch, if you push in on the piston ring it should flex and have a tiny bit of movement indicating it is not seized up. Second thing, DONT rev a saw with no bar and chain. If the idle is set too high without your knowledge you risk snapping the connecting rod. Last, clean as much dirt and debris from the outside first and as you work your way in prior to disassembling. Keep on posting, nice job friend.

Never heard of conrod snapping story in my 37 years as a mechanic
Neither have I- in a 2-stroke there's compression at both ends of each stroke which is a cushioning effect '- and is one reason why 2t engines are lighter than 4t. Rods etc don't need to have the same mass for durability.

I have found that there is ALMOST NEVER a need to remove the high and low speed adjustment screws when I'm cleaning with a sonic cleaner.
Back in the day when I used Chemdip or carburetor cleaner I always had to remove.
Sonic cleaners are awesome. No harsh chemicals and less work too!

Cant imagine how they ever approved ethanol fuel mandates. I literally had to go to extremes for a time to avoid ethanol fuel in my state. They had to change some laws to fix the issue. Now we have ethanol free in 91 and 93 octane at many vendors. I have some saws to tinker on this year as soon as winter stops messing with my spring weather.
Great video, I have this exact saw, 20 years old. Heated my home for 17 years using the saw. Only trouble I had with it was my chain oiler stopped working and I had to replace it. It had a recall once for intake replacement. I put a heat pump in 3 years ago, no more firewood needed. It's been a great saw.
I also have the same saw, harvest trees from my property. Last 2 years and counting have not used our propane furnace and saved not using the hydro required for it.
Will turn 69yo next month and will keep it going till I can't.. Peace & Freedom.
You should have checked the clutch and bearing & grease the bearing.

Great video. 40 yrs ago, worked at small town tire/lawnmower/chainsaw shop. Dont think a day went by we didn't sharpen someone's chain. Had one chainsaw mechanic, he could fix anything. Even a McCullough. One time a crew brought in a 2 man chainsaw they needed to get running to cut down one tree. Always wondered how big that tree was.

I recommend using the non ethanol pump gas ⛽ from SUNOCO
I bought tru fuel from Home depot as I can't buy non-ethanol fuel in Canada at the pump. Haven't used it yet as I used premium pump fuel with Stihl oil mix for my first uses. I've purged the fuel like Stihl says for storage so will use non-ethanol tru fuel next public land firewood permit.
@@brianeastman3547in some countries like mine there is no such thing as non ethanol gas. The only thing you can do about it is buy the best gas you can get since it will have anti corrosive additives and make sure that if you wont be using your saw for more than a couple of weeks you purge all the fuel lines.

Hmmm....I like how you got it running first....nothing worse than cleaning it all up, then doing the maintenance, only to find it don't work due to a fault internally like a big end bearing or a hole in the crankcase....!
It's nice see someone working on a saw that works after it's rebilt. The saws iv worked on were burnt-up so they NEVER started. Too much alcohol, or not enough oil.

Why almost noone cleans the saw first? Rather work on dirty, and oily saw with bunch of debris allover everything...
Some basic cleaning is necessary before starting the diagnosis and repair. However, you do not want to waste and hour cleaning something before you know if the repair will be sucessful. I understand what your saying and it does make sense though. Thanks for watching!

I do. Regularly. Just to keep it in a good shape. Don’t want to drive 150km to find out that the saw dows not run due to poor maintenance.
I have the newer model of the same saw and discovered it doesn't like Stihl ready-mixed fuel!
It throttles up slow (lags) and seems to lack power.
I ran out of the factory premixed fuel and bought some Evenrude 2 stroke oil for outboards.
Mixed about 1.7 oz of oil to 64 oz of 89 octane E10 gasoline.
No lag and runs strong! Easier starting cold and warm.
Whatever works for you man, keep doing it.

You're not the only one having issues with that canned brew. It seems to be manufactured very inconsistently lately; and that includes Stihl's canned concoction. Some of it is downright worthless.
What many people dont talk about when restoring a diapharm carburator damaged by old fuel , Are the importance of its check valves. you can clean a carb absolutly spotless in a ultrasonic cleaner, put a fresh brand new carb kit in it , and it still wont run .. because one or more of the carb's check valves has had its tiny flapper turned into a glob of goo and is blocked so no fuel can flow through it . just an awareness heads up.. there are examples on youtube that talk about testing and replacing them.

This is crazy!! Why didn't you blow the saw off before you started work on it? That is the first thing you do!Just had to smell the fuel and you will know where the problem is.
When you have repaired as many chainsaws that I have, you know where the problems occur the vast majority of the time.
The hardened fuel lines, coupled with the terrible and decaying fuel, pointed to this common issue.
If there were other problems they would have been addressed at that time.
For example, if the saw ran erratically when started, I would know there could possibly be an air leak.
At that time I would conduct and pressure and vacuum test.

we were never allowed to run our chainsaws without the bar, chain and cover put on for the reason that the clutch drum could go flying and cause harm to self or other people
How does a centrifugal clutch fly apart, when there is a lockout holding it on?
by lockout, do you mean the small piece of spring steel known as a circlip, which holds the clutch drum and the floating rim sprocket to the crank shaft, which drives the chain? lack of proper maintenance can cause excessive heat build up within the clutch components, which can de temper the the circlip making it soft enough to deform, therefore reducing its ability to hold the drum to the crank,, or do you mean applying the chain break, which is a band of metal that encompasses the clutch drum to stop the chain rotation in the case of a kick back, in which case, if your revving the fck out of your chainsaw with it on, your probably not a regular chainsaw user@@user-mk4ij5tg4d

Very helpful video! This is a project I think I need to tackle on my ms270. My ms270 will run until it gets too hot and will shut off. I can usually restart it right away but will shut down again and it sounds as though the gas may be boiling in the tank.

I mix 50:1 and I’ve also tried the pre mix in the metal quart bottles at 50:1. Also my saw is 90% cleaner than the saw in this video. Lol.

Why didnt you remove the high and low needles before ultrasinic cleaning? And why didnt you set the lever height inside carb?

Forceps are interesting. I wonder if that would have helped working on those small McCullough chain saws that have the fuel tank in front with the hidden fuel line with very little access?
Have just ordered an ultrasonic cleaner for my 2 stroke kit. Couple of questions, what cleaning fluid do you use, can you put all the parts of these carbs in AND how about the metering diaphragms. I am new to all this and i'm trying to keep a fleet of inherited Stihl machines running.
I used La's Totally Awesome All Purpose Cleaner. In my opinion this works the best. I have a link for it in the video description if you want to see it.
You can also use Simple Green, but in my experience it turns the carburetors a shade of green. La's Totally Awesome All Purpose Cleaner does not do this and make the carburetors look brand new.

Does any one know what the secondary carb inlet on the top does , my 026 has one but none of my other sthile's does ?
It's not a alternative pulse pump because they have a standard pulse tube from the sump .

I bought my first saw last February. MS250. Used it for my first public land firewood permit. It got dirty fast. I cleaned it between uses. Took four trees for 2/3 cord which was below what my permit allowed but I live in the city.
The dirtiest parts were with the chain amd sprocket but I also took care to clean around the fuel and oil caps before opening them. I've worked in a hydraulic repair shop for years so I know how bad contamination can be.
I can't buy non-ethanol fuel at the pump in Canada. My first use was with premium fuel with Stihl oil mix. I've purged it after I was done per Stihl storage instruction. I bought Tru-Fuel from Home Depot for next use as it has no ethanol to wreck the seals. I'll see how that performs next use.

clean your work area: compressed air
At least it was easy to remov the chain and bar from the saw. If bio oil was used as lubricant i often see very resinous residues glueing chain and bar together so that it won't move at all. It takes a few days in petrol/gas to resolve a bit. Also some lye with alcohol is working sometimes. But its really hard and takes a lot of mechanical effort to make the chain move smoothly again.

Do you reccommend the Stihl pre-mix fuel in the can for the chainsaw?
Stihl premix is a fantastic product.
However, as stated by Plutogalaxy, it can be quite expensive compared to mixing your own fuel and other brands of premix fuels like True Fuel. The major bonus of the Stihl premix is when you are purchasing a new piece of stihl equipment, like a saw or trimmer, it doubles the standard warranty.

1. Here's the thing: that level of maintenance is beyond most of us chainsaw owners.
2. Paying for the parts AND man-hours to get a professional to do it all... can cam close to the price of a refurbished chainsaw.
As for most of us non-professionals: we don't KNOW if we're going to be cutting again tomorrow... or in a week... or in 6 months, so the fuel stays in the tank. If it rots or separates and damages all those seals... there's bugger all we can do about it.
Love my Stihl... but after replacing the manual primer thingie... and losing various screws thanks to vibration... I'm getting tired of it all.
Sometimes it's easier and cheaper to retire stuff and get a new one.
Might be a long comment but i tried to squeeze as much as i could in this context...
The entire video is heartwarming,found out the hard way and learned exactly what you've done to the carburetor,but there is a habbit that can devastate the engine if you don't know what it does...cold starts man...never rev up immediatelly and for sure no throttle pulses,can ruin the needle bearing from the crank journal,if the piston needle bearing is ruined,you will not know untill the crank bearing is fked,and you may have no symptoms nor any ideea but will happen sooner than you may think,this is way worse in cold wheater,steel warms up slower than the aluminium,let some time to equalize the temperature of the engine parts bro...,educate yourself and your clients will be thankfull to you and you will earn more quality clients,wich is also a good way to ensure the bussiness along the times.

Nope. Nothing to really note.
Before pulling the carb off blow off all the loose crud. No need to dirty the ultrasonic fluid more than you have to.
My metering diaphragm in my Husqvarna pole saw just failed and I never have used ethanol fuel. I've been using it since 2004. I guess 20 years is reasonable.

What would be a workable alternate for using significant amounts? (Non-ethanol, supposedly…)
Yes.
Canned fuel does help with the longevity of a 2 stroke engine for 2 primary reasons which are as follows:
1. Its ethanol free ( no ethanol damage can occur)
2. Its has a high octane rating. ( high octane helps guard against pre-detonation in the cylinder, which can cause a rough running engine.
The negative to using canned fuel is the price, as it can be quite expensive.
An alternative to using canned fuel is to buy ethanol free gasoline with a high octane rating, at least 91 octane if possible, and a high quality oil mix like the Stihl HP Ultra Oil. This will be much cheaper and be on par with the canned fuel.

I would recommend checking the oiler system while the side cover and bar are off. But then again that's another job/charge. Lookin don't cost much. Ethanol sucks.
I AllWAYS spray off fuel cap and oil cap with brake cleaner before I open it , keeps lots of trash out 😊

Liked and subscribed. Do you offer a service that I could send you the saw and you could perform a similar service to my 026 PRO Stihl that I bought new in 1997? I have never been able to get that saw started without pulling it hundreds of times and using ether. Once its running it will run great and start on first pull all day or all weekend. Then of course it sits and won't start. I needs a good rehab.
