Its not a sad song to me at ALL! If anything, especially lately, it's helped me overcome immense regret and grief! The whole song takes you through a journey of reflection and absolution. You start in a painful, painful place where you recount all your regrets and mistakes you've made in your life and doing so is excruciating, but it ends in a peaceful place where the narrator lets go of the weight of his regrets and seeks to live out life and be a better person.
