Excellent, courageous and insightful review Eddy. For me, Tell Me Straight, is by far the best song. As you intimated, just because we are talking about icons hear, it doesn’t mean you can’t be critical, in fact, you should be.
I listened to it 20 times now - from start to finish. Couldn't believe the torture I was putting my ears through. I also kept reading these incredibly favorable reviews so I listened to the album a few more times. My ears couldn't take any more abuse. But my brain just kept telling my ears to relax and everything would soon be alright. Then - I saw this review. I realize now - that I'm not the only true lifetime Rolling Stones fan that thinks this album is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. My brain has now apologized to my ears. Oh yeah - almost forgot - it was indeed your video that stopped my brain from perhaps doing serious long-term irreversible damage to my ears. I just don't know how long my brain would have continued assaulting my ears. Your video snapped my brain out of it's stupor and saved the life of my ears. I am forever indebted to you. I just can't thank you enough. Time to crank up some Real Stones! AAAH = Exile On Main St. My ears don't hurt any more!!!!!!! Bless You.
100%. It was mixed for vinyl and premium streaming. Sounds pretty bad in SD or on CD but I haven't heard the CD. My streaming is just on my phone and it's available in dolby atmos. My understanding is that format sounds more like the master tapes.
Andrew panned Keith to the left and Ronnie to the right. Different than all the 70's plus records. I feel the production style is very live and immediate like Some Girls was but im definitely not saying its as good. Best since Undercover minus the over the top Mick songs. There are some hidden great songs on Undercover but overlooked because it lead off so drastic for old school fans.
I have been a hardcore fan for over 50 years of The Stones. I like this new album. I think it is solid. The album is not going to sound like Jimmy Miller anymore, Jimmy is gone. I don’t mind a young producer at all. This Guy talks far too much People must remember that Mick and Keith are old guys now. We are lucky to get an album To call it a fake album is a bit much…
Way to go Eddy! You expressed my thoughts about this album by the band I've loved SO much for almost my whole life. Andrew Watt and AI manage to fuck up what could have been a late-career gem. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. Thank you!!
Agree. It’s packed full of catchy songs, covering a variety of musical genres. They’ve swallowed their pride and gone for a young producer, who has given them a much needed kick up the arse. Obviously nowhere near their “Imperial” late 60s/ early 70s stuff but expecting that is like expecting AC/DC to match Back In Black again. A robust 7/10 for me.
It took 60 years but I think "Some girls" and " Hackney" are the 2 best albums they've ever made, most of the other albums including the big 5 in the 70s are loaded with filler!
YOU are one of the most talented people at the mic ! and i mean EVER BABY !! KEEP IT UP; HILARIOUS , informative , knowledgable , witty, ironic, irreverent , you are a Robin williams / Stern / mark and brian , EXPERT AT THE MIC BABY ; KEEP IT UP
Your right. This album is the worst thing they have ever put out. If you got to explain these kool aid drinkers will never understand. Andrew watts influenced pop garbage,.Biggest sign it sucks: Andrew Watts gets writing credits WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!. They need his help writing music WTF. I bet he wrote more lyrics than keith. The guitars could have been done by any studio musician. I have to go listen to Some Girls to remind me what rock and roll is. My god, when Taylor Swift is singing with them live in concert what a f-ing joke. Then Black and Blue, Goats Head Soup, Exile, .....So let down.
They are 80 years old. Stop being a douche and try realizing this is a dang good album for where they are in their career. To think at this stage they can emulate their visceral earlier sound is a pipe dream. This album is fun and enjoyable.
Finally! Someone who gets this album for what it is - crap. As much of a fan of the group as I am, and after waiting 18 years I am so disappointed... I honestly don't understand all the overwhelming fanfare for this album. New subscriber!

Focused on the negative, so is your review. These people are 80 years old for God's sake, if you we re a real fan you should be glad that they are breathing and walking at all.
As a long time Stones fan, I have to say I totally agree with you, it's their worst album ever, so uninspired. My guess is that it's basically a Mick jagger project, and Keith and Ronnie were forced into it. They have though this tremendous marketing machine going everywhere saying it's a great album, and some people are so dumb they actually get convinced it is apparently. Whatever, we can still listen to all the rest:)
@@JoshSimpson47 I did actually. I think it was the worst (maybe A bigger bang would be close too) until this one. Harlem shuffle is definitely above anything on this album, even One hit to the body is a much more creative and stone song than Angry for example. Bridges to Babylon was their last serious, inspired, solid album.
Actually one thing you missed. Mick's lyrics are not only childish at best, but unconnected and strangely verbose. He cannot stop firing syllables, rather than give the music and whatever poetry he can still scrape up, a little ROOM to groove. Quincy Jones said it was the space between the music that mattered (or some such thing) and that was always the classic Stones approach. Here Mick just cannot shut up.
Thanks for subscribing and for weighing-in. Good point about Mick's "word salad" lyrics and the lack of any kind of dramatic and emotional spacing in his singing. This is one of the reasons I made my AI cracks: it's not just that he's auto-tuned to death, but it doesn't even sound like the same mind and soul at work.
The Rolling Stones (BAND) died in stages. The first death was when Brian came to the realization he created a monster called the Kieth and Mick circus instead of the band he envisioned, the second death was when Brian was fired. The third death was when Taylor realized circus life was not his bag. The forth death was when Wyman realized the same. The final blow was when loyal soldier CHARLIE passed. There is a reason an album full of blues covers was the best product since the early 80s. Mick can't write a good song from a dry well. He used to be among the finest lyricists in the world, but it's like the devil himself came like a thief in the night and sucked away all his clever ideas. The others acted as enablers for too long. There was one other death stage, it was when Mick did the Martha and the Vandellas cover. I just.knew from that point on the bright light was going dim.

Yeah, I only touched upon this, but it's one thing to do an album without Charlie this late in the game, it's another thing to not honor him and his contribution to the Stones' sound by not even attempting to replicate his style on the album. Like Stevie Young is playing in Malcolm Young's style and thus honoring it IMO. Charlie had a very specific style and it was a big part of the Stones' sound and I feel like that wasn't recognized when making this album (which I thought should've been treated as a tribute to Charlie in the same way PWR/UP was a tribute to Malcolm Young).
I say give it a try again and then listen to anyone of their recent live shows online. I’ve heard this album on reel to reel and it’s a good effort for 80 year olds.
I listened to the album twice, I found it okay I guess, but nothing I was really eager to relisten to. And the video with the girl on the car, I just found kind of cringy, to be honest.

Great review, Eddy. I completely agree. I find it a dumb pop record. I hate the songs. This Andrew Watt produced Bieber for goodness sake. All the fanboys have come out in support of it. I find it lame.
I personally like this album but I can see why some might not. It's grown on me a bit just like Dirty Work has over time. Steel Wheels is actually in my Stones top 10 😅! Always fun to see different peoples takes.
@@paulkruger491 Actually I am. If anything brings a person joy and doesn't infringe upon another person's happiness, I'm glad they're enjoying it. No sarcasm here. I really mean that.
I wanted to like "HD," as the Stones have been my favorite band since high school. But this album sounds/feels like a Mick solo album. Too slick/poppy, and the songwriting is far below the standard the Stones set. The only song I really like is the Muddy Waters cover.
Great Review, Eddy. I was really disapointed after listening to the CD for the forth time now. My main issue are the songs...they don't grab me. To me it sounds like a lame M.Jagger Solo record. Great Review. Thanks for your efforts
I yield to no-one in my love for the Stones, but for me this new album shows the Rolling Stones are done. What we have today is not the Rolling Stones; it is the Mick 'n Keith Show, with the further terrible disadvantage that Keith can't play much any more. Every song on this album is forgettable. Sweet Sounds of Heaven is a sad attempt at gospel by the band which effortlessly did Shine A Light and Let It Loose. Dreamy Skies is a country song, sure, but it simply doesn't compare to No Expectations or Dead Flowers or Sweet Virginia, or even Do You Think I Really Care, which the band left off Some Girls for 30 years! Jagger is a force of nature (even allowing for whatever autotuning took place) but I don't understand the production on HD and they don't feel like the Stones any more. I think they were never the same after Wyman left in 1992, but accepted Darryl's playing because the band still swung, they were still loose. That's gone now. Nothing against Steve Jordan but he's a basher. That was fine for Chuck Berry, but Jordan lacks Charlie's instinctive finesse and jazz triplets. I could go on, but sadly I agree with this review.
Thanks. You also bring up a good point: This is very likely the LAST Rolling Stones' album and that means the last original song on the last Rolling Stones album ends with Lady Gaga singing all over Mick Jagger (plus it's their worst album 😉). Just think about that...!!

I wrote a mini review for Facebook, which I'll repost especially for you here: "Exclusive KK's Priest The Sinner Rides Again Review from Eddy: It's an absurdly metal album that I like more than I should. Not as strong as their debut but a solid followup that will be in my heavy rotation this month. Pros: Ripper brings a lot of energy and passion vocally and of course the guitar work is exceptional. Cons: cliched lyrics and too many Gregorian chants. If you're someone who has listened to Painkiller more than 100 times in your life and Jugulator more than 10 times, you might dig this album. Favorite song: Strike of the Viper. These guys should totally open for Rob's Priest...!!!! 🔥🔥🤘🏼🤘🏼"
@@EdwinCannistraci ah nice one Eddy. Thanks for that because I’m not on Facebook, I try to limit social media as much as I can haha. Can’t argue with your summation, it’s a solid no frills metal record really. Another decent addition to the collection. Let’s see what Invincible Shield brings next year.
I don't know that for sure, but it sounds like that to my ears (at least half of the songs). At very least, a "cut & paste" method onto Watt's computer was definitely utilized.
This rant is awesome. I totally dig the new album and also totally dig this rant. The album is over polished but I think you are over stating things. Dreary skies, Sounds of Heaven, and a number of other songs are fairly stripped down. Each his own though.
That's a good approach and perspective you have. I don't hate the album, I don't love it, I guess I waver between okay, so-so and meh. But Eddy makes some great points and I generally just love his spirited and entertaining reviews and reactions to albums and bands, regardless of whether his views align with mine.
@@derrickyodes8743 I’m not a producer but what I meant was the sound feels compressed compared to older albums and a lot of Mick’s choruses lean into pop music. On the whole I like the album a lot. Stones have embraced modern trends in past albums also. Miss You was considered pandering to disco when it came out for example.
The single sounds generic as hell. But what else is knew. They've been putting out generic, forgettable music for 40 years. If this album had been released before social media, it would sink into obscurity quickly. like Undercover or Steel Wheels. But a new album gives loads of people an opportunity to express yet another opinion, good, bad or indifferent, so it's garnering attention.
Steel Wheels is still their worst album. Not only is "Hackney Diamonds" better than say, “A Bigger Bang”, “Dirty Work”, "Black & Blue" and "It's Only Rock & Roll", it is better than the last 3 Zeppelin albums, the last 5 Floyd albums, the last 5 Yes albums, and the last 7 Rush albums… to name a few.

Excellent, courageous and insightful review Eddy. For me, Tell Me Straight, is by far the best song. As you intimated, just because we are talking about icons hear, it doesn’t mean you can’t be critical, in fact, you should be.

You get it for sure! 😉👍🏼After re-listening to the couple songs I liked on the album, I decided "Tell Me Straight" is also my favorite track.

Tony Visconti should have been at the helm.
Bless You.

The album sounds great on vinyl.
I would hope so...!!
Find it a strong album, but I enjoyed your review.

I think it’s a brilliant album.
Glad you like it.
@@Bez1-eb3du Glad you like it.

Yeah, sad but true. They had a great run though, right! Maybe Keith will do one last solo album before he passes on: I'd like to hear that.
Guess you never heard Dirty Work that’s the worst
@@JoshSimpson47 I did actually. I think it was the worst (maybe A bigger bang would be close too) until this one. Harlem shuffle is definitely above anything on this album, even One hit to the body is a much more creative and stone song than Angry for example.
Bridges to Babylon was their last serious, inspired, solid album.
Do you really think that Keith Richards can be "forced"into doing anything he doesn't like or want to?
You absolutely nailed everything that needed saying about this catastrophe. NEW Subscriber!
Here Mick just cannot shut up.
he is so awesome!!!
I just.knew from that point on the bright light was going dim.
this new album isnt even the stones, its mick solo and its garbage
@@andrewanders6692your right the new album isn’t even the stones all it really is is mick solo album fettering Keith the whole band is done finished if there’s no Charlie then it’s not the stones they should just retire they carried on so long it was ridiculous for decades and decades the stones were never quite the same band at all from the day baseplayer Bill Wyman left I knew even back then the band was over it took them 30 years just to release 5 studio albums that were garbage tattoo you was the last real true stones album period the whole band should have called it a day after steel wheels Bill did he stopped he did the right thing the whole band should have stopped after steel wheels
Yeah Martin Popov said the drums were totally wrong not Charlie with an excruciating hi hat and snare.
Lady Gaggha is a deal breaker for me. Sweet Sounds is like a second rate Elton John Disney Ballad
I say give it a try again and then listen to anyone of their recent live shows online. I’ve heard this album on reel to reel and it’s a good effort for 80 year olds.

I wanted to like "HD," as the Stones have been my favorite band since high school. But this album sounds/feels like a Mick solo album. Too slick/poppy, and the songwriting is far below the standard the Stones set. The only song I really like is the Muddy Waters cover.

Great Review. Thanks for your efforts
Thanks for watching and for weighing. And, as you know, I agree with you. 😉
I sadly agree with your comment. At least we have their old albums, right?
Best review epic 11/10. Wasn't the epitaph the rockin chairs wanted
Thanks. You also bring up a good point: This is very likely the LAST Rolling Stones' album and that means the last original song on the last Rolling Stones album ends with Lady Gaga singing all over Mick Jagger (plus it's their worst album 😉). Just think about that...!!
