  • This was the first refurbishment version of the Journey into Imagination ride at Epcot, Walt Disney World, Florida.
It's somehow obvious why so many guests complained about the ride's storyline and how it was nowhere close to the original ride. Sometimes you shouldn't touch a Classic, it's a Classic for a reason. Anyhow, for the sake of documentation, here's JIYI, with fully remastered Video footage.

I think what they were trying to accomplish was to "modernize" the ride for Y2K, make it "cool" and "hip" for 1999, but it didn't even do that right. Even looking past the fact that they got rid of the original and Figment/Dreamfinder, the biggest problem with the ride is that it was *super lame*

The current one was supposed to be a temporary quick fix but they never developed a true new version. This still follows the diminished new layout that was cut down and now you load where the dreamfinder once met visitors in his flying machine and followed them.

The main problem with the 1999 version of JII is that it tried to ground and break down imagination into logic and reasoning. It discouraged us from looking at the world in a childlike sense of wonder and instead wanted us to conform to the realities of the world. It tried to spoon feed us into how imagination should be processed and making imagination seem something so complex and sophisticated that we are inferior to it. Even the montage at the end really didn't have anything inspired or new. It was merely taking objects and merging them together. The ride was cold, dark, uninviting, and everything the original wasn't. It was a massive contridiction to the message of Dreamfinder and Figment.
The 1983 version welcomed all walks of life to imagination and made you realize you can imagine too and that there is no right or wrong way to imagine. It also recognized that imagination isn't just about science and technology. It's also art, literature, drama, movies, etc. Each area was exploding with detail, color, and enviornment. Love and care was just pouring over every inch in that track. It was so whimsical, wonderful, enchanting, and addictive. it swept you off your feet with pure amazement. It makes even grown men, like myself, reduce to tears because of how beautiful it is.
Even the 2002 version is still trying to ground and control imagination, a part from the last scene. I think the Imagineers should've had Figment guide the ride by himself, if they couldn't get Dreamfinder. They clearly had the right idea for the ride just based on his dialogue alone. With him, Dr. Nigel Channing is just useless here and is just here because they probably wanted their money's worth with Eric Idle. I feel like they're trying to use Dr. Nigel Channing as conflict to Figment to make it the plot interesting. What made the original interesting was the detail visuals and the whimsical world it created. Conflict does not belong in imagination and certainly not in this ride. (Which by the way, Eric Idle is not responsible for the iterations. He is an actor who is doing a role. He doesn't have any say in his scripts or what the Imagineers do. )
As much as I would love to have the 1983 version back so I could finally see it for myself, I highly doubt it's coming back in any iteration or form. Walt Disney World is pouring all of their energy, interest, and excitement into Marvel and Star Wars that beauties like Journey Into Imagination may not "profitable" for them. Plus, Walt Disney World is mostly geared to children and teens, and so many children today are so used to the current ride and Dr. Nigel Channing. It's all they know. They may actually not be receptive to Dreamfinder. Just because we like the original doesn't mean that the children will. I would love it if more children know about the original ride. If they prefer that one and actually vocalize it to Disney, that would be out of this world. I would be floored.
I only knew about the original Journey Into Imagination since this past summer and I actually tear up every time I see it. I watch it most days, at least once. I'm an artist, so I can easily credit the original ride for inspiring me to go all out and be creative with my artwork. Tony Baxter, the genius that started it all, really poured his heart, soul, and inner child into what is still beloved by most Disney historians today. What depresses me the most is that I'll never get to meet Dreamfinder or hear him sing, radiating in the turntable. I'll never get to see the magical carousel in the arts or get spooked with Figment in the literature section. I'll never hear One Little Spark in the grand finale seeing all the Figment screens. I'll never get to experience the true Imageworks. There is so much that his pavilion had to offer that I'll never ever get to see and it makes my stomach drop a little.

You think Stitch's Great Escape is the worst thing to happen to Disney World? If you do, it's probably because you didn't know this ride existed! I remember riding this turd. When it was over, I almost didn't want to get out of my seat. "Excuse me, when does the ride start? ...No, that wasn't a ride, that was a painfully long warmup sequence. Now show me the actual ride. ...Really? You call that a spiritual successor to Journey Into Imagination? Well, try again, because that was HEINOUS." The only time I've ever walked off a Disney ride and wished I could demand a refund. It's so bad that the current ride actually acknowledges and plays off the fact that this version was so bad.

So I just recently discovered the original Journey Into Imagination a couple of weeks ago. I have never been to WDW, so never got to see it. I live in California and grew up with Disneyland. I am so much in love with the original ride, and wish I had had a chance to see it. This is a very poor replacement. I can see why it didn't do so well. I feel bad because this is ok, but that's about it on its own, but in comparison to the original ride, it just doesn't stand a chance. The original is just so much more creative, and enriching.

This version of the ride is so stupid. It makes the new one look like Peter Pan's flight in comparison.

I think it still is garbage. No matter how many adjustments are made to the renewed approaches, the charm and atmosphere of the original JII will forever be lost in time and memory. It's a shame.
