Decisive Strike: How U.S. Navy Helicopters Crushed Houthi Assault Boats

  • 31 December: In a recent naval operation off the Yemeni coast, U.S. Navy H-60 Seahawk helicopters successfully neutralized three of four assault boats operated by Houthi forces. These boats were engaging in a hostile attempt to intercept the MV Maersk Hangzhou, a civilian vessel navigating through the area. This incident is notable as it marks the first use of American rotary-wing aircraft in direct action against Houthi elements in the region, a significant development following the increased tensions stemming from the escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Sea Hawk was such a great game changer to NavAir and surface combatants (Sub? HFRO 😎). The size, capabilities and collapsibility, coupled with "recovery systems" brought all the capabilities you mentioned to sea airpower projection.
It will be interesting to see how the Army's move to replace the Blackhawk impacts the Sea Hawk's future insofar as airframe production economies of scale. IMHO Sikorsky's S-70/H-60 platform could be the equivalent in longevity to that of the H-47 (Chinook family) and H-53 (Station family). It's a form and function thing.
Love the breaking news posts. We flew over these same waters decades ago. Not surprising, pirates were there then.

I'm glad to see the old SH-60 Silorsky's are still flying and working hard for the U.S. Navy in 2024. We were flying these same aircraft when I was in the Navy in the early 1990's. I remember when my squadron started transitioning over from the very old Sikorsky SH-3's to new SH-60's, and after 32 plus years they're still in service.

Old saying goes: "dont fix it if it aint broken". Those are powerful machines designed specifically to do best at what they are inteded for. Its very hard to replace something that is already perfect. There are many air machines that the US airforce and US navy still use after decades, its because they are simply unreplacable. For example america's B-52 bomber, its been in service for 70+ years, once u have a perfect formula u just keep on improving it, no need to invent a new formula.

I met the media relations officer for the USS Theodore Roosevelt when I was covering it coming into port a couple of years ago for refit (NS Kitsap) and was sent to interview the captain. Dude was a Sea Hawk pilot by trade, but had an Army Airborne patch on his shoulder. Slightly confused, I asked him about it... he had been an officer in Army Airborne (can't remember if 82nd or 101st), but got bored of jumping out of aircraft and wanted to fly them, and transferred to the Navy because landing a helicopter on dry land wasn't enough of a challenge, he wanted to land on a ship at sea for the challenge and bragging rights.
I had never felt so inadequate in my life.

I think you did a really nice job of using stock B-Roll and specific, very recent, (same day!) current events amd blended it into a strong episode. It's not 'just a recap of this morning's attack on the container ship' it's much more comprehensive; the B-roll looks like a news feed - but you didn't suggest it was the actual attack on the ship. Well done!

For the sake of global domination, the West uses direct military influence, threats of force, "privatization" of elites, "color revolutions", encourages terrorism and extremism. Thus, the continuous expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance actually provides the United States with the opportunity to absorb states, deprive them of independence in defending their national interests. NATO's duplicity cannot be hidden under any pretext. For years, NATO members have been verbally proclaiming their commitment to peace, while fighting or threatening war against any country that does not agree with US policy. NATO's military power is used to preserve Western hegemony, economic enslavement, and political pressure on states that do not pose a military threat to the alliance. Over seven decades, NATO members have become involved in more than 200 military conflicts around the world.

2:27 All H-60 models produced have hinged tail pylons, they leave the factory built like that, and that hasn't changed since the early 80s. However, its only the maritime versions that normally have the powered/quick-fold tail rotor pylons, where it folds with a flick of a switch. With all other versions, its an involved procedure done by the mechanics where you have to disconnect the tail rotor drive shaft, tail rotor control cables, several electrical & communications cables, & then remove the two large bolts on the left side of the pylon.

Regardless of their motives it is not acceptable. These often deadly behaviors have been allowed to morph into an Epidemic. Guessing there are three boats and it's occupants who will not engage in these activities again.

It is simply incorrect to refer to the Houthis as pirates in this instance, and actually their motives are everything. Pirates have always been a concern off the African coast, but immediately before the October 7 attack, travelling the Suez Canal route had been relatively safe.
The Houthis have stated that they will stop when Israel's disproportionate attack on Gaza stops. Often, attacks like these are dismissed as being extortionate terrorism or carried out by an "Iranian proxy," but they are not simple acts of piracy.

Then you probably should know they're Knighthawks, not Night hawks, as they came after the CH-46 Sea Knight. But the MH-60S's DOD designation is officially Seahawk.

I'm wondering if they use some fancy .50 BMG ammo these days on their door guns? I never really thought about ammo selection for something like a navy helicopter door gunner, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was HEIAP or something.

Anything negative words the left will get your comments deleted. Anything negative against a minority or any POC, delete. Trust me, I'm a POC and I'm sick of this commie style dictatorship.

Back in 2000 with the introduction of the MH-60S. That model is a mash-up of the land-based H-60 fuselage with the large sliding doors on both sides of the cabin, but with the powertrain/ folding bits of the SH-60 versions.

The H-60S KNIGHTHAWK helicopter is the variant seen in the segment. The key ID feature is the H-60 tail wheel. The MH-60B SEAHAWK and MH-60R OCEANHAWK have a tail wheel set further forward which allows the tail boom to fold.

I think you are confused on where the tail rotor pylon fold line is located on the fuselage. Its the exact same place on every single one built, regardless of tail wheel location. Specifically, its at fuselage station 646, or in a general sense, about 6 inches ahead of where the fuselage bends upwards on the tail pylon. The tail wheel, in no way, has any relevance to the tail pylon folding.

The SH-60B LAMPS Mk III had its designation changed to MH-60B to identify that it had the ALQ-142 ESM suite and LAMPS data link installed and its weapon suite upgraded to the MH-60R capability. Helped draft the specifications on the upgraded birds. You can tell the R from the B by the removal of the ALQ-142 antennae. The original CH-60S was designed for use on platforms with greater volume hangars and larger landing areas. The navalized H-60 airframes had to fit in CG-47, DDG-51 Flight IIA and Flight III, DD-963, and FFG-7 hangars.

@davidmurphy8190 while you seem very knowledgeable about the helicopters. I believe the terminology was a sh60b block whatever. It never changed to MH. Mh is the designation for glass cockpit 60's which there was never a glass cockpit sh60b. I believe your thinking about the SH60F which had the upgraded avionics from the Bravo. I'm a rated 60S crewman and fly with 60R pilots and crewman as well.
