Age doesn't mean anything. If they're fun to play then play 'em. Doesn't matter if they're old or new. Doesn't mean any particular generation has outright failed.
sadly, it's mostly people who can't or don't want pay for modern console + subscription, some country have extra taxes on hardware(PC parts and consoles). So until service is turn off it's their best option. Or just bros who don't really care about upgrade, they just stay on PS3 until PSN/UA-cam/Netflix close.
I played some COD World at War & Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3. I even played Warhammer 40K Space Marine for the first time. And even played some Killzone 2 online as well. While I'm not the best at online games, it's still fun and interesting to see so many people still playing online on older systems like the PS3 and even see so many people doing their hardest to bring certain older games back online. Really shows how much older gaming has more life and effort put into it that many people still try to go back to it.

As I was a little bored during the exams period in may I thought it would be a good idea to turn on my old ps3 to check how it was to play minecraft and now I have bought multiple new games for it like Rdr and Mgs4. It's a great console and very fun to play because of the nostalgia.

Ps3 online is still fun and nobody can convince me otherwise especially with the brooks wingman converter it’s still fun playing with fandoms in different stupid little games. Charm is still there. Matter of fact I think old games still having dedicated communities like 20 years later is damn impressive.

i went back and have been playing MW2 free for all for a while now, and i can recognize probably 70% of the players in my lobby at any given day now. the community is very small but dedicated to keeping the game alive and most of their stats don't even save. it's pretty much the only cod game you can reliably find a lobby that isn't TDM. i run a mod menu and give unlocks to the regulars that have new accounts whose stats reset every day. if you hop on, there's a good chance you'll run into me
Although I owned a PS3 originally, I picked one up again and I am really enjoying playing all the games I couldn’t afford at the time. It is a great system with an incredible library. Even the licensed shovelware have some effort put into them, bar some extreme examples (Ride to Hell Retribution etc). I don’t think I’ll ever get bored at this rate
I highly recommend people giving Plants vs Zombie Garden Warfare (the original from 2014) a chance, it's still very popular on the PS3, every day I find people playing it very easily and even using voice-chat. It's funny that the PS3 version even has more people playing it than the PC/PS4/Xbox 360/Xbox One version.

I still play the cod games (MW3, BO2). Mostly BO2 zombies. I'm planning on getting another copy of BO1 since my disc doesn't work (it needs some resurfacing). And for MW2 I need to recover my main account where I bought a dlc map pack and uninstall that map pack so I can play online.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed Basement Gamer, but in some of the older CoD’s, if you’ve changed your username during the PSN name change period, your stats won’t progress nor can you access some of the servers. It’s a real shame but if you have an older account that you made years prior with no name change, it will possibly still work. I can’t play MW3 2011 anymore since I changed my name and my stats won’t save on BO1. MW2 doesn’t save stats either unfortunately. You’ll be better off switching over to 360 if you as the servers for the older CoD’s are more functional there.
The PS3 as actually such a unique consoles. The mix between “future proof” and the infancy of online gaming. Not having to pay PS+ has truly created a “secret online community of gamers in a budget”. Certain Cod games from BO1 onwards up until Ghosts may have a descent active community (it’s weird. MW3 and BO2 are sometimes dead cause of hackers. Yet somehow Ghosts might still have a lobby). BF4 is somehow still very much alive. And all around, you might have a descent time if you’re a normal human and search an online game DURING A WEEKEND.

Played Street Fighter 3rd Strike Online Edition a few months back. PS3 online was awesome because it’s free!
