Best wishes to you both.😊
What a great discussion. I learned quite a few things I am going to try. Also, this talk with an expert in making pictures - instead of pixel peeping geeks - might be a good antidote for people anxious their 20 something megapixel camera is in need for an upgrade. See 23:40 you need only 6 MP for magazine covers (or even posters). Great stuff, such a down to earth yet elevated discussion. Thanks Matt!
The Sony A7R V that's 61 megapixels does the combining trick as well. You can get 26 or 16 megapixel full frame RAWs. You lose about 1/2 a stop of dynamic range though. I tend to shoot it at the medium size 26 megapixels.
Thank you for this interesting video. I very much like and appreciate Leica cameras, but I happen to have a Lumix S5IIX, which has some enhanced video features, and I really love it. So I'd recommend Leica fans to look at the Lumix as well, and, of course, it has the L-mount.
6:07 I choose the canon R3 for similar reasons: 25 MP = all speed and reasonable storage. I do disagree on what canon displays... Yeah video guys seem to get al of the exposure toys, but I can get a histogram and I've shot canons in studio setting where you're exposure is in your controls . I can't disagree about Fuji colors: they are a SUBJECTIVE color so you either love em or hate em.... I shoot canon's when I want to control the look in post. I shoot fuji when I want the SUBJECTIVE look of Fuji color for event and reportage shooting... like choosing Kodachrome in the films days because you a subjective look. Fuji also GREATLY benefits from their dr400m mode which rebalances the DR to include highlight retentions in trade for some black details. I enjoy the SL2s and Leica's general spare no expense approach: best EVF, best build, the sl2s' tradeoff on MP for speed (hence why I went for the canon r3..similar reason), and I love the native DNG files. However Leica's really have to do something like Fuji for their highlight retention. Having near 20 stops of DR for infinite shadows to only have wedding dresses and clouds clip because you exposed for the skin tones is nuts. Underexposing all of your images for a "proper exposure" is nuttier. Even canon's have a "highlight retention mode" for bridezilla's wedding dresses. Leica having a highlight metering mode is just admitting to the fact that making the photographer a SLAVE to the technology's limit in the ability to BALANCE 20 stops of DR to include highlights instead of all shadow is wrong.
Great points, thanks for sharing. Ha yes I get you with regards to clipping highlights so easily on many Leicas. ..and yes I think Fuji are love/hate cameras (the look of the images shout Fuji)

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom for portraits I think that’s fine my rant was more story telling wedding photography is almost impossible in portrait mode and too many are shooting that way bcos it displays better on socials…
It is a good thing I am an amatuer and not a pro like your guest. I just bought a 50mm F1 Nocton VM Voigtlander in like new on Ebay from Map Camera, was cheap and I looked at dozens of pics posted and since Map has 100 rating and 4 day free delivery, even with the Taxes it was $400 less than new price. I don't know if you have used this lens but I am hoping it solves the higher ISO noise on the SL2 which I own. Like you I like the Voightlander look, and bought the 75mm after watching your review. Thanks for your reviews they really do influence my buying
I think the Leica micro-lens-array on the front of the sensor (which the S1s LUMIX equivalent does not have) also makes for a greater image rendering, in any case a great gear choice for sure. And Leica’s color science is quite potent too. Oh.. and S-series is not really officially discontinued… (S4 mirrorless to come?)
6 mp for a high fashion magazine cover today but in the 90's magazines like Arizona Magazine would only take 4x5 transparencies for their covers and inserts. How times have changed.
Yes M's still have there place. I owned the Cron APO and sold it and now use the Voigtlander 75mm f1.5. The Summilux is also very nice and is more of an art lens.
For those who are confused what Peter means by “put nothing in the viewfinder” ➡️ only Leica and Sony offer Zebra information in stills mode, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Hasselblad don’t. By no particular reason, zebra can in that other brands only be used when camera is in movie mode.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Peter once mentioned that very clearly in one of the videos on his channel. But please don’t ask me which one that was, definitely can’t remember. 🙈
Very interesting discussion. Never realized the Hasselblad X-series wasn't a proper mirrorless. Also, the Leica S-series is a DSLR, so again wouldn't provide the live info he requires. BTW, Peter's channel link is broken.
Great interview. Like Peter's view. Fun to see I am not the only one to not like Fuji colors 🤣. The Sigma fp and fp L have false color for photo btw. But not good to work with flash sadly.
Hello Matt. Did I understand Peter to say the X2D EVF did not give the same information found in a proper mirrorless camera? The user manual says it is the same view as seen on the touchscreen. Please clarify. Thanks.
The Hassy gives less info vs say Leica, no B&W view, no waveform monitor, no blinking highlights, no FP.. (or at least some of those from memory). It's a big issue.. it was enough for Peter to drop Hassy completely for new cameras. He went to Leica as nothing else offered the same from what he said.
Loved the interview. Interesting to hear a highly successful working professional like Peter Coulson detail why he chooses Leica. Clearly he has evolved these choices through experience. Some of them are different than I expected.
Interesting interview Matt, thanks. Quick question: I did not quite get what Peter was saying about the Hasselblad X series (X1D, II, and X2D) not having an EVF or the EVF not displaying enough information. Granted that there is no BW option and no over-exposed highlights / under-exposed shadows flashing signals (but a histogram)... it felt as if he never really seriously used one.
Hi Bruno, thanks. Peter owns a Hassy X1D II (I think it's that one) and was sent the X2D so he certainly knows these cameras and tried to get the most out of them. Compared to Leica EVF they just don't give the info he wants/ needs hence he had to get into the Leica ecosystem.
Thanks, good tip! I have the S5 and use it to record YT videos but don't really look at the features. I don't like the VF so it rarely gets used for photos.
Completely agree with Peter´s feeling about Sony. I think they're probably amazing cameras (never tried one yet) as practically every other brand but it doesn't appeal to me. I am a Fuji X series and GFX guy and I find those to be very inspiring cameras too.
Great video as I was watching it I was thinking of questions I would have liked answered about the appeal of the Leica and then you were asking the exact same questions! Happy days. I love my Sony's so was trying to figure out what the Leica would offer that the Sony did not. (dont think I'd have enough justification do duel brand being a hobby photographer though) Would love to see someone with Peter's style of photos and mindset try out the Fujifilm GFX range to see what they think when the next one comes out.
I’ve got a Sony A7iii and a Leica M10-R. The Sony is like flying on autopilot whereas the Leica M is like going into a dogfight (that’s good) with a Spitfire (not that I’m a pilot)
I like how Peter is drinking his beer while you interview him with a pad of questions. And his answer is to point. "No soul" "No soul" "No soul" So aussie XD. His preference for the SL2/SL2-S instead of M is fun to watch also as it will make the M loyalist go crazy. Not to mention Sony / Canon/ Nikon / Fuji users. "GFX?" "No!" (enough said!)
I ran into the same issue with tethering. Always was so excited to see Peter shooting the Leica with LrC and tethering, but never got it working on my Apple Silicon MBP. Now it is clear to me, either Peter uses an Intel based MBP or some older MacOS. What was the secret ? Please let me know. Beside that, I think it is important to let Leica know that something is wrong at the moment. Great video, love both of you and your artwork.
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I am a long-time user of capture one, apple would make an update, and capture one would catch up after a month. The solution was to turn auto update on the Mac and wait a month ;-) I would move from Lrc to Capture One for tether shooting, and now even quick shooting on the iPad Pro too.
@@AlexKroke The only problem is I have tried for over 2 years to achieve my look in Capture One and I can't even get close, so that's why I don't use Capture One
I shoot both the S3, and the SL2, I can attest the S3 is superior- the SL2 is "different" as Peter prescribes, and it's a certain look- but file vs file, S3 all day-
Brilliantly done… Peter is definitely a master in his craft and his view on not hunting for the highest megapixel nor the sharpness made absolute sense… plus, he loves manual focus … a true artist rather than a technophobe 🧐
Great video by two great photographers. Q: somewhere halfway the video there was a comment made about B/W portrait at 1600ISO. Is the with het camera in JPEG or DNG?
Enjoyed this. Was hoping you would ask Peter about the Monochrom. I'm not sure if you can tether the M11, but in principle is it a way forward for him ?
10:05 I agree: the combo of SL bodies with M lenses are great. M11's have a $700 EVF that is still near half the Rez of an SL's evf. for critical digital photography focus, having and EVF is critical. Film Leica's can still get away with rangefinder focus as film is no where near as sharp as digital, and the film grain makes sharpness really subjective. i.e. there is so much texture and film related details to distract from focus issues. In digital there are none. even 800 ISO digital images, especially in the 40MP and up cameras, noise is so minimal that all you have left is your lousy manual focus abilities!! 😝 I'm still Leica Sl2s curious even if to have a modern mirrorless body for my M glass. Either that or a film M body, either leica or a voightlander bessa.
Yes! I tried out an SL2-S at a camera store event, recently, and the EVF is spectacular. I ended up buying a used M10 a few weeks later but I like the thought that I can use the M lenses on an SL at some point, too.
Interesting that Peter stated his Sony’s have no soul. I have a Sony mirrorless, great camera, lots of technology, but I don’t “feel it” when I pick it up. This is very different from my Leica soulful experience.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom For Peter it sounds like he is fine with slightly missing focus which is what happens more often to me with short throw lenses. I align more with you and precision focus.
Dont mean to sound critical .. .. I personally.. would be interested to hear why "man in the street" chooses Leica ... Also Leica lenses in Micro FT.. Leica bodies are great for fashion models, portraits, architecture or landscape (basically things that don’t move or move extremely slowly). But if you look at any photo-shooting scenario capturing real life at a fast pace Leica is just way too slow for that. Look at all the professional “official” NFL NBA Boxing NHL MBL Tennis (any sports) or news photojournalism on the ground, or even wildlife photography a Leica body will HOLD YOU BACK severely. You can’t tell a bird to stay still

Compared to Leica EVF they just don't give the info he wants/ needs hence he had to get into the Leica ecosystem.
re: scopes - LUMIX S series cameras all have Waveform monitors and Vector scopes, no need for a Ninja. Best bit? They are native Leica L mount.
Thanks, good tip! I have the S5 and use it to record YT videos but don't really look at the features. I don't like the VF so it rarely gets used for photos.
No micro-lens-array on the sensor however.
Completely agree with Peter´s feeling about Sony. I think they're probably amazing cameras (never tried one yet) as practically every other brand but it doesn't appeal to me. I am a Fuji X series and GFX guy and I find those to be very inspiring cameras too.
Thanks! Yes i've never really taken to Sony even from their very early days but I know others love them.
I know what you mean. Love my Fuji X-T5 and Leicas, but while I'm sure the Sony cameras are great, I don't find them at all tempting.
Nicely put. I use MF glass on the SL for the same reason!
Thank you! If I ever get to play with a GFX I will compare to Leica and give my thoughts (Like the Nikon vs Leica I did)
Enjoyed this
Thanks!
Haha yes, Peter says it straight :)
I love the SL2-s but the Z8 outguns it in every field.
Interesting thanks. If I get to try one in the future I’ll make a video
It used to work on Apple Silicon but ether LR changed or Apple, I'm talking to Leica now to fix this problem.
Thanks and I see Peter has answered you too!
@@AlexKroke The only problem is I have tried for over 2 years to achieve my look in Capture One and I can't even get close, so that's why I don't use Capture One
more to learn here than in a million dpreview forum posts in 25 years 😂
And less trolls! :) I used to write on DPreview years ago but it got too much.
I shoot both the S3, and the SL2, I can attest the S3 is superior- the SL2 is "different" as Peter prescribes, and it's a certain look- but file vs file, S3 all day-
Thanks for confirming! The S3 has a special/ different look agreed
Brilliantly done… Peter is definitely a master in his craft and his view on not hunting for the highest megapixel nor the sharpness made absolute sense… plus, he loves manual focus … a true artist rather than a technophobe 🧐
Thanks! Yes manual focus is the way to go. AF makes it too easy!
I wonder what Peters opinion is about the new Nikon Zf.
Ask him! :) ..it does look very cool (I'm an ex-Nikon guy and I love film cameras.. I like the styling)
Great video by two great photographers. Q: somewhere halfway the video there was a comment made about B/W portrait at 1600ISO. Is the with het camera in JPEG or DNG?
Thanks! ..no DNG (the usual), we don't shoot with JPEG
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Tx Matt. That's what I thought 🙂
How is the focus peaking of a SL2S?
I use the SL and it's fine for my needs. SL2S is probably slightly more advanced with newer technology.
Enjoyed this. Was hoping you would ask Peter about the Monochrom. I'm not sure if you can tether the M11, but in principle is it a way forward for him ?
Great point. I think I know the answer, i'll check with him and add it in part 2.
I’d really like to know his view of the Hasselblad X2D. Please add that too. ❤
@@Super.Quasar I hate it, sorry Hasselblad
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Let's hope your interrogator finds out why ! Ha.
Leica has soul, the others are photo copiers. Best camera comment ever.
Haha yes! Peter says it straight :)

I agree: the combo of SL bodies with M lenses are great.
I'm still Leica Sl2s curious even if to have a modern mirrorless body for my M glass. Either that or a film M body, either leica or a voightlander bessa.
And the SLs have IBIS!
Yes! I tried out an SL2-S at a camera store event, recently, and the EVF is spectacular. I ended up buying a used M10 a few weeks later but I like the thought that I can use the M lenses on an SL at some point, too.
MIGHT BE better to show subjects images during interview for visual connectivity
Thanks, yes I think I will if I do more. Luckily Peter is on YT so it’s easy to view his work
Interesting that Peter stated his Sony’s have no soul. I have a Sony mirrorless, great camera, lots of technology, but I don’t “feel it” when I pick it up. This is very different from my Leica soulful experience.
Thanks for confirming Wilfred! I’ve never used Sony but I have the same experience using Leica and other brands.
What is the meaning of "there is nothing in the viewfinder"? Assist tools or just nothing?
I'm guessing the stuff in the viewfinder is not what he wants - no additional aids to help get the job done.
Was the video sped up? Your voice sounds very high pitched here
Different mics (from Peter) but probably me just too excited lol
I am the opposite. I prefer the longer throw over the shorter throw. I am not as accurate with the shorter throw lenses.
Yes for years I never really noticed this as I'm more precision focus person. Shorter is good for street.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom For Peter it sounds like he is fine with slightly missing focus which is what happens more often to me with short throw lenses. I align more with you and precision focus.
Hassleblad X2D is Leica M11 killer
It's not ..it's nice but you can't compare to a M... to the SL series perhaps
..Peter had both and went with Leica as a pro (for reasons mentioned)
Great point that the world doesn't care about sharpness. Don't fall for manufacturers' marketing bs.
If my eyes are sharp enough I’m happy!
Peter that beer is getting warm, slam that baby.
Haha
I said that to a few people , sony has no soul all the shots are the same flat..
That’s what I hear too!
Hey, you wanna be a real photographer? Go Leica 35mm rangefinder. Get down in the trenches like the good ole days! 😎😎
I’m guessing you’re new to my channel haha! I use a 1931 Barnack and everything after it, Leica iii, Ms and even Rs 👌🏻🙂
Matt let Peter talk ...
Thanks, yes sorry it was my first attempt at interviewing. Agreed.
Dont mean to sound critical .. .. I personally.. would be interested to hear why "man in the street" chooses Leica ... Also Leica lenses in Micro FT.. Panasonic Leica Summercron f1.2 42,5... f2.0 25mm and others ... these are direct scaled models of full frame Leica offerings ...ALSO Latest budget friendly Leica offerings 24mm to 90 compared to 24mm 70 f 2.8 ... looking at Leica Tech MTF the sharpness Resolution graph charts in Leica lens description Tech Data ...is the budget friendly range up to it? ... On paper Graphs it is .. even when comparing Zoom to Primes ..worth checking and comparing@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
A much faster approach to create this video would have been - why not Leica.
Thanks. I didn't know what Peter would say until we made the video.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank you Matt - I am honored that your reply. You are up there with the real ones
😊
Thanks!
Agree sony no soul
Thanks, i've never used Sony but I love my Leicas!
That's a very psychological argument. I bet you can't tell from the images.
"Too perfect"...how can you engineer anything for a guy with that attitude?
Haha I think I’m guilty of saying this too. I value imperfect lenses for my portraits (and film especially vs. Digital)
Why does it feel like he’s rushing the interview? It’s annoying
Thanks, sorry it was my first attempt interviewing so kept interrupting as I was too excited to chat cameras etc.
You can’t tell a bird to stay still
Yes agree for sport and nature get a consumer AF speed shooter
Leica SL. More like… Leica adjacent 😅 ….
Haha love the SL!
The channel is coming along nice. Congrats on success and interviewing Peter. I watch him too. I’m not a fan of bw but he’s a great portrait photographer.
Thank you! Very kind. Hopefully I can share more interviews in the future.
