For me it was the realization that I'd reached an actual existential decision point. Alcohol wasn't "going to kill me some day". I was already dead but hadn't picked a place to stop moving yet. That being the case there were quicker, cleaner, ways to finish than alcohol. However, by that time I had a great deal of experience with the results of making important decisions while drunk. After I sobered up enough to make an irreversible decision it didn't seem so urgent anymore. As Dr. Peterson points out, the lack of alcohol left me at loose ends. I found some trivial thing to do that was still positive in at least a tiny increment, then something else. I couldn't afford therapy so I bought some spiral notebooks at a yard sale and started to write. Since it was never intended to be published or even read by anyone but me the subject matter was irrelevant. At least it should have been. In time I realized that it didn't needed to be read as much as it needed to be written. All that was over thirty years ago, more than half a lifetime.

I never smoked nor drink in my life. I didn't wanted to become a brainless consumer with no inner dialogue. 🙃 Sorry corporates. But drinking and smoking ain't cool but signs of tragedy lifestyle.

Ask the Lord and believe it will happen and when I say the Lord I mean Jesus Christ, I don't mean that idol in the picture behind him.
