I think it’s important that the ice worms hunt penguins in the trailer, and because the penguin takes a underwater tunnel that was most likely carved out by an ice worm, they probably hunt creatures that swim and hunt penguins
From what I remember there is a hole in the fabricator caves that leads directly to the void, this has lead me to believe that the shadow leviathans leach off of bigger creatures that reside within the void, the shadows definitely look like leaches
And they do that because, the food supply is so scarce in the crystal biome, that their bodies have adapted to digesting the hard rocky material that the crystals are made out of.
@@cakeinator7294 or figure out how to siphon the energy and harness it like the precursors did with ion cubes so the leviathans consume the crystals and it passes right through their body and affects their body causing their black skin color and bioluminescent insides and could effect their body shape and behavior depending on the crystals they feed on
As for the Shadow Leviathan, I think it’s incredibly likely that they are cannibalistic. But for the Ice Worm, I think a more likely scenario is a combination between them being able to explore more of Sector Zero than what the player can explore, but also that in the area that the player CAN explore, it is only inhabited by a single Ice Worm

My theory of how these leviathans may stand there population is that, when your not around at the places they live in the leviathans ice worm and the shadow, they travel along the planet in search of diffrent coral reefs miles away, in the place where we cant enter however they may go deeper in the ocean where we just get telported to the surface and find food like small ghost leviathans.
I’ve always thought that there is just one ice worm chasing you when I was playing the game because it seemed to be constantly following me around. And I’ve never had it pop out in two different locations way too quickly after each other.
by the shape of the mouth and structure of its body, i think it might be an evolutionary offshoot of lava larvae from the first game. the possibility of eating the crystals is even more likely if we consider this.
Have you noticed that the shadow leviathans mouth is not facing forward like a normal mouth and instead faces downward? The mouth is in the perfect position to scoop up and eat rock punchers on the sea floor. It’s just little details like that which are one of the reasons I love this game
Usually animals that live in cold arctic climates have bodies that are adapted to surviving off of very little. A small amount of food can usually support them for a while, and they had to adapt that way since food is always scarce in frozen areas... but what confuses me is that the Ice Worm doesn't at all seem to apply this kind of logic. I can't think of any logical way it can produce enough heat within its horn to melt through the ice it burrows through without requiring a steady source of energy. Then again... its an alien creature on an alien planet that is entirely fictional, so maybe I just don't know anything.
I think that recently there was a lot of mid-to-big sized creatures for them to feed on, but it died out because of kharaa and now these leviathans are close to extinction without enough food
I have a theory: Maybe the shadow leviathans migrate to a feeding grounds and bring back food or live off of what they ate. Like the ghost leviathans migrate to the void
I recently watched a video about deep sea gigantism (on earth) where larger bodies are more efficient than smaller bodies, and also have slower metabolisms. Like how a whale feeds on literal bits, the sustenance needed for these big bois may not be as much as we thought. Although these leviathans are described as active predators, it's possible (and observable here on earth) that large animals dont have as much a voracious appetite as their size might make us believe
@@amielrumbaua8387 Well from the pda entry we learn that the ice worms horns inner chambers are filled with deposits of raw alkali metals that react violently with water, creating an exothermic chemical reaction. That’s how it heats up its horn.

Always wondered if the Shadow Leviathans are adult Ice Worm Leviathans. They have too many similarities, which means the two species could've also came from the same ancestors, but evolved differently depending on where they lived.
When the PDA talks about something else eating these ice worms thats probably referring to the Frozen Leviathan, which is most likely why those bone are there, and why they're so old-looking
The shadow leviathans almost look like parasites. They could be parasites that leech off something bigger. However I do not know how they’d be able to eat after they found the crystal/fabricator caves. Perhaps they somehow evolved to adapt to something down there which allowed them to survive.
It's possible that Shadow Leviathans could use their acid spitting ability to break down some of the tough plant material and maybe even crystals for more sustenance, digging them up into their mouths with their powerful limbs. They may also have slow metabolisms requiring less food Ice Worms may travel miles through ice sheets searching for food as it's very hard to tell how many Ice Worms are in one place, or how large their territories are due to the fact they are almost always concealed when not attacking. They may migrate during seasonal changes to find food in higher abundance
Maybe the ice worms are such perfect predators that they never fail to just grab a snow stalker when needed. They could be mostly dormant under the ice so they don't need to spend a lot of energy. In that case the snow stalker population would be enough.
Hey man I’m a huge fan I only just found your channel but I like how in depth this is keep up the good work man I hope u make it big thanks for the entertainment
The Ice Worms are the easiest to explain, like you mentioned it is likely that they hunt further in land than we can explore. However, there is no conformation that everything inland is ice (As in, the entire of Sector Zero is an Iceberg ) which does make it harder for the IW to find food. An alternate theory is that they kinda operate like earthworms, if I remember correctly, in that they "eat" the ice they tunnel through. While I doubt there is much substance in the ice, they might feed on the plankton and other small creatures in the ice (if I remember correctly the glowy green ice bits have a bunch of micro organisms in it). Judging by their size, I believe the player encounters only a singular IW and that they might be territorial (Hence the bones etc.). As for the Shadow Leviathan... I am stumped. They don't seem to posses the ability to sustain themselves off of micro-organisms, as there is not much that would help them in capturing vast quantities of the stuff. Their mouths also seem a bit clumsy to effectively capture smaller creatures, those mandibles or "legs" seem well adapted to capturing/eating larger pray. I would be amiss to not mention the Reaper Leviathan, while I doubt the SL's mandibles are as dexterous as the Reaper's, it is possible that they can use it just as effectively. I wonder if they don't swim up to the surface and feed on live prey, think like those small aquatic creatures that attach themselves to sharks an the like and eat small portions of the host's flesh. It would make sense since it means they might feed on Glow Whales and then on occasion other creatures. I doubt they eat the Rock Punchers, as their ability to break rocks seems more than capable of breaking several SL Mandibles in the process, rendering them an "emergency" food source rather than main. Finally I also doubt they are cannibalistic... They sure made a coordinated effort in absolutely reking my Prawn Suit when ever I am down there XD TLDR: Ice Worms might survive off of ice Plankton and the Shadow Leviathans likely eat bits of Glow Whales every now and again.
Hey, seems like the youtube algorithm has read my mind because I was just thinking about leviathan food and the video showed up. Giving my two cents of contribution, I did some experiments with the shadow leviathan. I made a base in the entrance of the cristal caves, with an alien containment and hach a bunch of eggs. And then I put those animals, one by one, in front of the shadow leviathan's path. He seemed to ignore every animal with two exceptions: cryptolids and squidsharks. He really went out of their way to eat those two.
I know this video is a little old but I would like to acknowledge the fact that a few animals I believe ( I forgot which ones but o think koalas are one of them ) have pouch like areas in their mouths and use them to store food incase they can’t access any. It’s possible that there was an abundance of food was there before the freeze that was there before hand which they stored which they feed on as well as the creatures around them. Seeing as leviathans are obviously big because that’s what a leviathan is it’s likely the food pouches would be really huge so in the case food isn’t readily available there would be enough to survive for days. Although this is just a theory it definitely seems possible considering creatures on our planet do this if I’m correct. Also if you actually took the time to read this thank you and remember to drink water go outside and eat. Thanks for your time.
So, usually in nature, larger creatures tend to eat whatever they can, however, there are a few who can go long periods of time without consuming anything. It is entirely possible that these leviathans could go through phases like this where they conserve their energy for a sort of feeding season in order to both let their prey population grow, and get as much food as possible. As for the theory of the shadow leviathan eating phytoplankton and other microorganisms, I believe it does this during its passive season as to gain as much energy as possible for feeding season.
I just noticed something about these creatures. They both are large and have elongated bodies, they tend to be dark in color and are quite big, and they even have pointed parapodia lining the sides of their bodies. In other words, these two leviathans are relatives. Kind of like the Sea Dragon and the Sea Emperor.
"Soylent ice is people!" Ice Worm is like, "yes." I do, have a real thory maybe the earthworm has the water that melts from the ice filterd in its digestive system and it filters the water so that the micro orginisms in the ice feed it also, like the Frozen leviathan, there may be peepers and such in the ice that the ice worm Leviathan eats on its way to eat other things like the snowbear things or YOU
I believe in the original game the plan was to have an opening from the dunes directly to the inactive larva zone aka thermal plant, sea dragons would use that presumably as a tunnel to the dunes to fight weaken and drag reapers down into the deep where they'd essentially boil and die to then be consumed. Hence you can see a few reaper skeletons in that zone. It was cut I believe because of technical issues and having more than 3 dragons, as for the ice worm it most likely preys on snow stalkers although there's hardly any of them in the artic spires and the shadow leviathan doesn't make sense as its size makes it difficult to move in amongst the crystals. What would've made far more sense to me is if the shadow leviathan was bigger and like the ghost leviathan lived in the dead zone, feeding off microscopic life or preying upon ghost leviathans in the dead zone and a smaller shadow leviathan say 1/2 the size was in the crystal caves but lots of them making it still difficult to reach the fabrication facility.
Well as far as I see it, one thing is that the tail of the ice worm is double pronged, a lot like real life centipedes, which use that so predators cannot find their head and may get confused and take a chomp out of the wrong end. The fact that ice worms have this as well may insinuate the idea that they are actually prey to something larger. Another fact is that shadow leviathans actually release stomach acids to eat prey, similar to certain bugs and crustaceans, who can release acids to melt food and eat it. This could mean shadow leviathans are not really fish, but actually bugs, hence the stomach acid weapons and bug ish limbs, not to mention that we don’t know how their skin feels, so it could be exoskeleton for all we know. Sorry, I know this was an essay but I just was spitballing ideas based off of real world animal science

I think how they eat is that they store food in somewhere in the body and slowly eat that and feed and anything that appear. But that's just what I think. Edit: I also think that the Shadow Leviathan has developed something that allows them to eat the crystals if they find any.

The shadow leviathan most likely ate shoals of fish that randomly spawn around, and couldve possibly been a geovore, which would explain it's highly acidic mouth
For the shadow, it’s a case of deep-sea gigantism. Larger organisms have much slower metabolisms, therefor the shadow would only need to eat 1 rock puncher every 2 week
I'm surprised how close one of these shadow leviathans is to Marguerit's house, did she even notice the existence of that huge creature? Possibly she's waiting to feel like eating some meat. 😅
I’m a bit late but I do have a theory as to why the shadow leviathans are alive. They are cold blooded animals. Now at first this doesn’t seem to change anything. However it changes a lot. In warm blooded animals such as us we make heat using metabolism which is energy intensive. This means most of our energy goes to actually just keeping us warm. This means that we need to eat more often. Cold blooded animals gets their body heat from the environment. This means they need to eat less. On earth animals that are cold blooded can go on without eating for months or even years. Given the fact that the temperature of the biomes they live in is 30 to low 40 degrees this means they could have evolved to get their heat from the water. If this is the case this could explain how they survived. They would most likely wait for breeding season before eating their prey to see the though the year.
the shadow leviathan databank literally tells you it eats on small fish because of its mouth attracting the food of the small fish which thus attracts the small fish
My theory is that the shadow leviathan feeds on the crystals for minerals and uses them to strengthen their teeth, that's why they look crystal-like, and explains their strange evolution to have funny looking legs and a weird mouth, it may have used those legs to dig into crystals and attach itself so it can chew on the crystals, and maybe snacks on rock punchers if they can. Edit: my theory also explains why they secrete acid, to easily digest the large crystal formations.
Ice Worms have been observed eating the carcass of a dead one. The Shadow Laviathan's appendages seem fit for bottom dwelling. The could do what floaters do an suck nutritional supplement from the planet. Reapers have engaged combat with each other seen through the scares left on their face, whether it be for food, territory, or dominance.

Ice worms could also eat bacteria and stuff in the ice like real life ice worms
There is no life in the fabricator caverns: the massive schools of fish:am I a joke to you?
So, usually in nature, larger creatures tend to eat whatever they can, however, there are a few who can go long periods of time without consuming anything. It is entirely possible that these leviathans could go through phases like this where they conserve their energy for a sort of feeding season in order to both let their prey population grow, and get as much food as possible.
As for the theory of the shadow leviathan eating phytoplankton and other microorganisms, I believe it does this during its passive season as to gain as much energy as possible for feeding season.
they might have different nutrient intakes or the fish deeper down have more nutrients for the shadow leviathans to survive.
This video is giving me some "Shandification of fallout" vibes, especially when you said "what do they eat?"
Dude well done. Really quality vid
Thank you, I really appreciate it :)
Based on The PDA entry, food just swims to the shadow leviathan, thus they can put less effort in finding food.
Imagine accidentally eating
@@necrodook for them hunting actively for food is strange lol.
"Soylent ice is people!" Ice Worm is like, "yes." I do, have a real thory maybe the earthworm has the water that melts from the ice filterd in its digestive system and it filters the water so that the micro orginisms in the ice feed it also, like the Frozen leviathan, there may be peepers and such in the ice that the ice worm Leviathan eats on its way to eat other things like the snowbear things or YOU
Oooh, the Ice Worm theory is interesting...
Iceworm eats snowtalkers the end.
But are there enough...
I cant wait for subnautica 3 voidcrash
Shadow Leviathan is eating crystals.
I ALWAYS thought that
I believe in the original game the plan was to have an opening from the dunes directly to the inactive larva zone aka thermal plant, sea dragons would use that presumably as a tunnel to the dunes to fight weaken and drag reapers down into the deep where they'd essentially boil and die to then be consumed.
Or it's just an overlooked design choice
Dude... you have amazing grammar for someone who is like 10, and your choice of words is beautiful!
Hi speedy👋 nice video. I always look foward to watching your content. From the video you made about where to find the cyclops hull fragments, to this video itself. None the less when i see your notification pop up i always click on it. Keep up the good work. -pat
:)
Nice video ! I absolutely love to listen to the video while playing Subnautica:BZ
last possibility: there is just one ice worm cause you never see 2 at the same time!
I don't think this could be right because of the Ice worm corpses we see in the ice spires.
@@JukeJointJinx what if the corpses are his parents or grandparents?
@@sacobi666 Actually, you might be right, but I think it's less likely that there would be just one ice worm.
@@JukeJointJinx well... im wrong cause on the wiki page of console commands it says: iceworm Forces all spawned Ice Worms to start their ground-exit animation, wait a few seconds, and subsequently return into the ground. which means there are multiple
Bro this is the first time I’ve watched this channel and I feel like I’ve known this guy my whole life
Thanks for the cool videos. You have a lot of interesting stuff about Subnautica and I like it.
I also believe the shadow leviathan may be cannibalistic and eat each other from time to time.
That is also possible.
@@SpeedyMouse I’ve never had a UA-camr reply to one of my comments 😀
GOSH I love ur page, I love ur voice (it's really interesting to listen to) and I LOVE UR VIDEOS qwq
Sweet and informative! Fun fact, an animal with 4 times the mass of another animal, in general will only burn 3 times more calories. This means that while yes they burn more calories, they are also more efficient! Not adding or detracting from your informative video, just a fun fact!
I think how they eat is that they store food in somewhere in the body and slowly eat that and feed and anything that appear. But that's just what I think. Edit: I also think that the Shadow Leviathan has developed something that allows them to eat the crystals if they find any.
Yessss new video i love your content you just did my day
Everybody in survival mode: AHHHH THE ICE WORMSSSSS me: how could such a large creature sustain warmth for an hour
"what does the shadow levithan eat?"
me: seatrucks and prawn suits
8:58 I know this is sad to joke about, but the other snow stalker is literally screaming "this is fine", while the one getting vored is like "REEEEEEEEE"
The shadow Leviathan kind of looks like the modern-day dragonfish
I just found your videos, i have to say your young sounding voice throws me off when I hear your very professional sounding speech.
I like to think that the Shadow Leviathan feeds off of the crystals growing in its habitat
The ice worms could stick their heads out of icebergs and eat eye jellyfish out of the water.
Sweet vid and videos your making keep it up 👍
Dude I love your content please don’t ever stop
The shadow leviathan probably feeds off of the rock punchers that live in the crystal caves, and the ice worms could feed off of snow stalkers
The underwater leviathans also have the options of the swarms we can’t interact with and smol little plankton and such
I love this channel because the youtuber isn’t a 27 year old man and it makes me think of starting my own channel
I’m not confident enough to do it yet though. I think people would make fun of me for being young like they had 6 years ago when I had my first attempt.
You could argue that lore wise, there are hundreds of rock punchers, it’s just that the game engine cannot handle 400 crabs punching rocks.
I have a big brain, obviously the crystals are rock candy and the Shadow Leviathan have a big sweet tooth (duh)
Yes
Very nicely done. Good job!
I love this world 4546b is one of my favorite worlds in sci fi and in my opinion one of the best depictions of a futuristic human society
the shadow leviathan databank literally tells you it eats on small fish because of its mouth attracting the food of the small fish which thus attracts the small fish
Ice worm eats snow stalkers as it is actually seen, and also they have an unimplemented swim animation but this vids are very interesting, keep it up
Oh, I didn't know that had an unimplemented swim animation, interesting...
Hey I just figured out that the shadow levithan and ice worm have the same ancestor!
Wanted to say thanks for cool vids on top of that u are a kid and could have a tone of homework but still gives us a lot of vids and they are of good quality thank u for the facts as well just over all thanks 🙂
another possibility for the ice worm is that in the ice there frozen microorganisms in the ice and that combined with the snow stalkers is enough to sustain them
