Dear Liz I wanted know that can we classify diphthongs as long or short vowel sounds , example: 'plane' It has the long 'a' sound and it is also a diphthong.
Good question! Compare 'plane' with 'wait'. 'Wait' has the same diphthong, but sounds shorter. This is because 'a' is followed by 't' which is an unvoiced consonant. Whereas 'n' is voiced. The reasoning behind this is that it takes more air to sound an unvoiced consonant, so we say the 'a' more quickly inorder to prepare the breath for the following unvoiced consonant. Hope this helps.
