- I was moved by watching Jimmy Carr on Diary of a CEO. It got me thinking about why I'm enjoying my reading so much and making videos about the books I'm reading. And I agree, it's really not about the olive oil and fish!

"I want human connection, but it makes me anxious when people talk to me"; incredibly relatable.
Right? I just read a phenomenal chapter in War and Peace that covers that topic well, when Prince Bolkonsky passes an old oak tree on his way to visit Count Rostov in the springtime. I relate to that character a lot.

Yeah, I resonated deeply with that. It's one of the things I get out of the masonic orders and I've made many friends that way. For personal growth, it's been great, but it takes me a couple of days to recharge after a big meeting.
The British invaded Afghanistan too. My grandfather was there during WWI. He was a sniper for a while and watch an Afghan make a rifle in a shed in an afternoon, with hand tools and a rope and stick lathe! When the Russians invaded, and later the Americans, he said that they neither would win. The Afghans are consumate warriors and guerillas, and modern armies don't cope well. He also said that one minute you saw them, the next they had melted away, and a minute later hordes were pouring lead down on you from a high cliff.
I thought the piece about connection and the Italians was excellent. Their diet is excellent, but their relaxed, lower stress, and above all connected sociability makes for longevity and happiness.
Of course, yes. And it's a region that's beaten back everyone who's gone in with an agenda. I have a lot of friends who served there. I got out the military before it kicked off, though through injury rather than choice, otherwise I'm sure I would have gone out there too.

I read Tolstoy's 'What is Art' last year with Ben. It's a fine work. You and I seem to argee about most things bookish.
It certainly seems so! Do you read any fantasy?
@@CamsCampbellReads I used to read a lot. The most recent was Lord of the Rings last year. What with Historathon, Crime and Punishment and War and Peace, plus Ben's stuff, I've not read much fantasy recently, but I do like it.

Just popped in to say that I’m really enjoying your content, Cams. I love Tolstoy, but have not yet been able to make friends with Dostoyevsky. I had a good crack at TBK with the HCLBC last year, but got distracted by something shiny, about 1/2 way through, and never went back to it.
Thanks Chrissy. I've got The Brothers Karamazov planned for November for a Discord I'm in. I read it before at uni and didn't enjoy it, but I wasn't ready for it then. It's an interesting project to be reading Tolstoy and Dostoevsky at the same time.
I can only imagine the jarring, wrenching changes in post-Soviet Russia. The State crumbles, mob-driven capitalism rushes in to fill the void...crazy. 11:23
It's such a fascinating period to read about. I was in Ukraine for a year in 1995-96 and it was a bit mental. The currency they had then only lasted a few years before hyperinflation killed it. I taught in Sochi, Russia in 1999 as well and was almost held hostage by the boss of the school where I taught. He'd had teachers do midnight flits, so he took our passports off us so we couldn't leave. We had to get the embassy involved to get them back, then did a midday flit halfway through a schoolday. The pupils came with us to the station to see us off on the train to Moscow. It was an interesting day!

@@CamsCampbellReads 1987...Mostly consistent. Wish I would have started earlier. Could have had all of that overblown adolescent high school melodrama to pore through. ("I'm not wearing brand name clothing! I got a zit on my nose! Gotta deal with that @$$hole on the bus today." Good times. 😆
@@TheGentlemanScholar I was 14 in January 1986 when I started so there's a good bit of high school drama in there. It's very cringeworthy as I'm sure you'll imagine.
