As a Capitals fan, I agree. Expectations were low for the Capitals this season. Even if we're only a .500 team for the rest of the season, that's 97 points and a top 3 spot in the division (unless Philly or Pittsburgh plays .700 hockey for the rest of the season). It would be a slight disappointment to finish under 100 points given how we started, but given the preseason expectations , it would still only be a slight disappointment. But it doesn't look like we have much reason to worry about just being a .500 team the rest of the way. We have never expected to maintain the early 120+ point pace, or even our current 115 point pace. I think at some point the panic index needs to include talking about signing upcoming free agents because that's really the only thing Capitals fans are worried about right now: the possibility of Thompson or Chychrun leaving in the off-season. For this season, we're completely worry free.
As a Canes fan this index makes me miss the "Waiting for Playoffs" section. While you never take making the playoffs for granted, Carolina has a nice bit of space. I think there is not much true "concern" but rather anticipation of seeing how Andersen does upon return and what might happen by the trade deadline. Long time Caniacs are absolutely happy right now to not have to worry about missing out on points in games they need to win to move up into a wildcard playoff spot.
As a long time Blues fan, I have zero concerns about this organization. I like the direction and think the IIHF tournament is an excellent example of the bright future for STL.

Ken Hughes just seems to know what he is doing. Getting into the playoffs is now a fair goal, so at least some of the new players will have seen it once as part of their development.
As a Bruins fan I think they’re ranked correctly which is wild because if you asked me 3 or 4 weeks ago I would’ve put them in the panic tier. That being said if they get bounced in the first round they’ll fall into Elmo tier really quick.

The lesson here. Don't read the internet. Me? I'm happy they're trying. I'm happy to see some guys looking good. Going to be a wild trade deadline.
I agree with pretty much all the placements. As for my bucket of teams...LAK - Solid. Cruise control. ANA, MTL - Surprisingly resilient, but wary of "drop games". VAN - About to start throwing dirt on them. CAR - GM screwing the pooch with the goaltending sit. This team has never had solid goaltending or seemingly had an understanding of the position. They bungled Nedelkovic, and it's been bad ever since. I like Kochetkov, but he isn't a stand alone - or even a lead goalie - yet. NYI - I think they share a problem with NSH - they have parts, but also a problem with team chemistry. Not exactly a "blow it up" scenario, but definitely need a tune up or even a top overhaul. ARI - Dead...
The Pens aren't as good defensively as the Canes but Ned's stats and Mrazek with the Hawks, and Lyon with the Wings, and Reimer with the Ducks/Sabres have worse stats than Koch. Andersen needs to be healthy for 3 straight months, not 9, and the money saved there goes to better skaters. As long as Carolina has Slavin paying for a top 10 goalie is not maximizing full team potential.
Lets not forget the sharks have faced a lot of injuries during the month of december, and you would think giving up all those late goals and one goal game losses it must really mess with the players mentally.
14:47 I agree with the placement of the Canucks given their many issues, including that they don’t appear to be as deep a team as the version that last season took the Oilers to seven games in a conference semifinal.
Montreal has gone on an amazing run and if they can continue to give 60 minutes every game they soon will be in a playoff spot as only 3 points away at this time
Stars should be in "concerned". Those recent wins were against subpar teams. PP is comatose. We're missing Pavs more than we realized. D is porous. If Seggy comes back this season, it may be too late to matter.
I would agree that the loss of Pavelski has hurt the Stars. He was always a spitfire when they played my Jets and he p*ssed off plenty of us Jets fans with the stuff he did on the ice but he was a difference maker on the ice every game. You also lost Tanev in the offseason which really surprised me. He's like the rock star of D guys on whichever team he is with. I'd love him on the Jets someday.
As a Ducks fan, I find it funny that you put the Ducks in the fourth row of the Power Rankings and in the happy row of the Panic Index. Apart from that, I agree with you 100%. Maybe a new coach would help too hehe
Leafs fan. Maybe they should be concerned. They only have 1 reliable goalie. Matthews is out until further notice. And what’s going on with defense? And please rank goalies! New subbie here learning lots from you.
You lost me on the Caps being in the second row. They are 6-4 in the last 10, same as Florida who keep getting shut out. They lead the Eastern Conference standings and are rolling. No reason for them not to be in the top row.
Thank you for bringing up Winnipeg. The entire hockey world is waiting to see if they have an answer for Val Kicushkin in round 1. And that defense does NOT.
Exactly. But a lot of fans keep thinking them being first overall erases all the issues they have. This team, as constructed, will be eaten alive by the Avs, Knights, or Kings in the playoffs.
It's a big no-no to negotiate lower pricing for a friend or relative. If you do, they will always wonder why you were trying to "rip them off" in the first place. Better to lose a deal than to lose a relationship with friends or family.
As a Leaf fan, we've had a stupid amount of injuries this year, are currently without Matthews and Stolarz still but have remained competitive and running with Florida for tops in the Atlantic. However, TB and Boston have started turning their seasons around so more consistency is needed to stay there. As in stop losing to basement teams all the time. It's an area they still haven't fixed and it hurts them every year. They belong firmly in the 2nd tier until they can change that.
Blues belong in the concerned category because their special teams are atrocious and have cost them some points. Unless and until they can fix that, they should be concerned at best (if goal scoring / goaltending drop off, they go into panic mode)..
The Jackets are definitely in the happy spot. They look way better than they were supposed to, and have clearly made the right strides to confidently make the playoffs as soon as next season. All they really need is an NHL level goalie
12:23 idiots always blame the goalie when the team sucks. Islander fans have been doing the same thing with Igor's buddy Sorokin, who can't do much with all the garbage in front of him.
As a Columbus fan, I don't think concerned is the right spot, I think people forget that before the season started and because of Gaudreau's passing, fans wouldn't have been upset if they had gone 0-82 so the fact that they are only a couple points out of a playoff spot at this point in the season is really good and personally I'm really happy with the way they've played.
As a Sabres fan, this is the right placement. We have a great coach, but bad management and ownership and a subpar roster with a culture and character problem.

I feel that Bedard is going to have a career trajectory similar to MacKinnon. Late bloomer if you will.
Happy New Years Shannon and THG community! Hope you all had a great holiday
Caps should be first row fans and team are all thrilled
Caps have more points than everyone except Winnipeg and Vegas. This has to be a troll by Shannon
@ yeah makes zero sense
Lets not forget the sharks have faced a lot of injuries during the month of december, and you would think giving up all those late goals and one goal game losses it must really mess with the players mentally.
A Smiling Sens Fan...that is me.
Let's hope it continues in 2025.
GO Sens Go!
As a habs fan, good luck we are coming for you.
@@SmHy23 There are the habs, and then there are the hab-nots.
As a Sen's fan, I expect them to lose. When they don't, that's a pleasant surprise. :D
@@SmHy23 Youve gotta come for Philly, Columbus, & Pittsburg first bud, we have bigger fish to fry!
Routing for you guys - Battle of Ontario redemption! Although the Tkachuk-bowl would also be fun as well ;-)
14:47 I agree with the placement of the Canucks given their many issues, including that they don’t appear to be as deep a team as the version that last season took the Oilers to seven games in a conference semifinal.
Nice combo of The Warning hat and HGttG jersey.
PANIC!!!!!
Great hat!
Could you change the burning Elmo magnet to a NYR magnet at this point? This is coming from a ranger fan lol. It feels more appropriate!
Having Toronto all the way to top by having Washington right below them doesn’t really make sense to me.
Love you ty for all of the content while im making food lol
Montreal has gone on an amazing run and if they can continue to give 60 minutes every game they soon will be in a playoff spot as only 3 points away at this time
Funny guy, Shannon. Washington's probably the best team in the league this year. He's just trying to bust balls
It's probably more about the fans, but Habs fans seems ecstatic.
Caps lead the Eastern Conference in points, 3rd in NHL in Points with Games in hand, but not on top row??
Mid
@choppergunner8650 top
Proper Research on all those Teams on top they have beaten. Some Multiple Times. Research.
Shannon thinks he's funny. Washington is the best team in the league.
@@phyllis5256agree as an Avs fan
Definitely agree. Dallas is underperforming, fan base restless for a return to the finals
As a Ducks fan, I find it funny that you put the Ducks in the fourth row of the Power Rankings and in the happy row of the Panic Index. Apart from that, I agree with you 100%. Maybe a new coach would help too hehe
i'd be happy as Columbus, they have surprised many with solid wins here and there and no one expected them to make the playoffs, the energy is good
Leafs fan. Maybe they should be concerned. They only have 1 reliable goalie. Matthews is out until further notice. And what’s going on with defense?
And please rank goalies! New subbie here learning lots from you.
All of this will combine into a good season and a first round exit as usual.
There is ALWAYS panic in Toronto 😂
Tell me there’s a 42 on the back of that jersey.
Roy pulls goalie for a defensive zone draw…
“Coaching is solid.”
Where's the towel? for the panic teams
It's a big no-no to negotiate lower pricing for a friend or relative. If you do, they will always wonder why you were trying to "rip them off" in the first place. Better to lose a deal than to lose a relationship with friends or family.
Just haaaaad to put the Kings next to the OIlers eh?
Not 1 metro team made the top row😢.
The Jackets are definitely in the happy spot. They look way better than they were supposed to, and have clearly made the right strides to confidently make the playoffs as soon as next season. All they really need is an NHL level goalie
Agreed on Anaheim.
Thanks for doing this. My team isn’t happy on your board…and if I’m honest…I agree. Thanks for being balanced and unbiased. 👊🏼
12:23 idiots always blame the goalie when the team sucks. Islander fans have been doing the same thing with Igor's buddy Sorokin, who can't do much with all the garbage in front of him.
Allvin is Rutherford’s water boy.
Islanders should wait by the phone
As a Columbus fan, I don't think concerned is the right spot, I think people forget that before the season started and because of Gaudreau's passing, fans wouldn't have been upset if they had gone 0-82 so the fact that they are only a couple points out of a playoff spot at this point in the season is really good and personally I'm really happy with the way they've played.
Good call on putting the Habs there. We're happy with recent results, but we're also worried. That 9-2 loss to Pittsburgh is still fresh.
I don't totally agree with the placement of the CAPS. We are in there with Boston and Pittsburgh and both of those teams are struggling this season.
As a Sabres fan, this is the right placement. We have a great coach, but bad management and ownership and a subpar roster with a culture and character problem.
Great Video, TGH! Happy new years all. Sorry, I'm sure he's said this but will there be much content on the wjc this year?
Pretty sure he said no.
Wow!!! Completely disagree with the Capitals!! You have had them in your top 3 on power rankings for like a month 😂. Love you Shannon but that one is a head scratcher
as a Sens fan I agree
I’m not sure if you have recently done this, but doing power rankings for each teams best line would be interesting
As a Rangers fan im not even panicking anymore im ready for the draft I don't want to root for this group of players anymore
Title says Panic, sweater says Don't Panic.
Coach power rankings would be cool
That hitchhikers guide jersey is dope af!
As a red wings fan, knowing we’re gonna win the cup is awesome 🎉
