    Great video! I just wanna mention that "lagom" does not come from the Viking age. It is instead an archaic inflection of the word "lag", meaning law, with the approximate meaning of "according to law/the rules" or "proper measure".

    • @AndrewAustin
      @AndrewAustin  7 років тому

      Wow lag law. I should have figured that out. Thanks so much I learned something new!

    • @misami7402
      @misami7402 7 років тому +1

      Where did you get that from? Lagom comes from "laget om" (Laget runt). Has to do with food from the beginning. You don't take too much or too little. The food needs to last for all present. Has nothing to do with laws. Then it's extended and basically means "not too little , not too much". Lagom.

    This makes me want to go to Sweden more. Maryland is my home but I want to see new things. I love and enjoy the Swedish culture, I was so interested in Sweden that I even learned a small bit of Swedish. I'm only 17 and I'll graduate Senior year of high school in May of 2018. I'll graduate high school before I even hit my 18th birthday. I plan to study music production/audio production but at the same time I don't know what I fully want to do, I have many dreams and interests. Definitely doing music production though, love music. I have my earbuds in all through the school day doing "most" of my work. I'm trying to find out so much about moving to another country.

    How weird is that two countries, Sweden and Turkey, which are two far in distance to each other have such common words in their languages. Futhark alphabet (predecessor of Runic Alphabet) is known to have the same origin with the ancient Turkish (the current Turkish has been intermixed with Persian language a lot in the recent history). If you want to compare the ancient Turkish with the Futhark language you can check the Gokturk Alphabet.
    Odin, the Viking God, was brought to light as the "Turkish Ancestor of Swedish People" by Prof. Sven Lagerbring in his book (you can reach this book from Royal Swedish Library: Bref till Cancellie Rådet och Riddaren, Herr Joh. Ihre om Svenska och Turkiska Språkens likhet, 1764, Lund University). Here what he concluded, given with his words: "Our ancestors are Turks who are comrades of Oden. We have got enough evidence on this subject. There are people who want to fool you into thinking they are Goths. I don't care whether it will be discrediting for me or not. Oden and his comrades were Turks."
    Some words:
    English: Ancestor
    Turkish: Ata
    Swedish: Ätt
    English: Oil-lamp
    Turkish: Kandil
    Swedish: Kyndil
    English:Lake
    Turkish: Göl
    Swedish: Göl
    Interesting fact isn't it?
    History is falsified....

    Think you got Jante-lagen wrong. That law is that noone is more special than anyone else. What you are talking about is "lagom" wich means that the vikings passed their drink around and it was supposed to last for everyone. Meaning noone should drink more than the other so it would last for the last guy.

    • @litenisola
      @litenisola 7 років тому

      Which is exactly what he said, refering to "lagom". Listen again, he doesn't talk about "Jante-lagen" he just mentions it, then moves on to mention "Lagom" and explain that.

    • @olabergvall3154
      @olabergvall3154 7 років тому +1

      But that is not the origins of the word "lagom" - from "laget om". That myth has been debunked on numerous occasions. No matter, nice vid anyhow.

    • @litenisola
      @litenisola 7 років тому

      Yeah, I know that the origins from our splendid word is debated and that it doesn't origin from the drunken vikings beeing kind to the next of kin, you are absolutly correct in this.
      My response was only towards dahlski because he totally mis-listned what was said. And, I just felt it was abit void of respect to "correct" someone, when the thing getting corrected didn't exist in the first place. Even more so, the correction was exactly what was already said.
      You are correct in that the meaning of the word is something else than what was explained in the video. But dahlski just made a mis-correction I felt like pointing out.
      Toodles fellow ancestor of them vikings.

      We will be moving from Texas to Skane. What are some of the cultural mishaps you stumbled in to? Are clothes and other items like that as expensive as people say they are outside the US? Is it as easy to get around using public transport as people say? Generally how do busses v.s. trains run? What about the cost of transport? What sorts of food delivery can you get in Sweden? Do they have Dr.Pepper? What American things do you miss? What American things that you were surprised that you don't miss? What is the youth culture like? ( teens/pre-teens) Do they behave similar to American children? Is there a nerd culture that is easy enough to be part of? Is the darkness hard to get used to? Are Swedes really that hard to make friends with? How do you suggest to go about apartment hunting at a distance? Where would be a good place to try and find like-minded friends? (video games/ comics/ movies/ tabletop gaming/ artists/ ect) What is the culture facing Americans? How difficult is the time difference for communicating with family and friends back home?
      I am sure I can come up with more but these were the ones that came to mind!

      It sounds like you dont know much about the downsides of USA, here let me get you up to speed:
      No universal healthcare, corruption, police brutality, persecution of minorities, highest incarceration rate and little to none rehabilitation, destroying the environment, violence, gangs, shootings, twisted experiments on people, using too much resources, inefficient spending of budget, overall stupid and ignorant population because of bad public schools, a capitalistic society that that makes the rich richer and the poor poorer and ofc Donald Trump.

    • @Impetuss

      I dont know, im Norwegian :p ive just learned a lot about USA over the years, bet i know things that most Americans dont know. Like how USA spends more tax money per capita on healthcare than UK, Canada, Netherlands, Australia etc. Yet you always hear: "I dont want to pay for others healthcare" lul

    As a swede I can say that you made the best choice. Because of a couple of things like, even though the police here take way too long to arrive most swedes doesn't want to have a gun since most of us doesn't consider that necessary, we don't have to pay a small fortune for healthcare, our goverment haven't made the deision to make everything illegal like rainwater collecting or running a juice stand and of course paid parental leave.

    • @biffsmith7875
      @biffsmith7875 7 років тому +4

      Actually you do pay a small fortune for healthcare. It's called taxes, something a swede should be familiar with.

    • @SonnyKnutson
      @SonnyKnutson 7 років тому +6

      +Biff Smith
      Actually we don't. We pay a small amount through tax which is an avarage by most of the population. This means that if something happens that would cost lets say 100'000usd for a single individual. We instead share the burden on our entire population and so each individual within our nation pays 1/100 of a dollar each. Including the unlucky person who was unfortunate enough to get in that possition.
      We have no problems with sharing the burden with our fellow Swedes. This is also why so many have been really raging at our media and politicians when they keep pushing open borders and no limit immigration. Because the whole system is depending on the fact that most of the population is working and contributing to the system.
      I would also add that because we have these shared safety nets we save TONNES of time on filling in forms and such. Ofcourse forms still exsist but they are very commonly already mostly filled in and you can read through and make adjustments if something is incorrect or they are very easy to understand and only requests basic information.

    I just wanna say; A HUGE welcome to Sweden!! (way to late, but anyway..) I really like migrants that have a true interest for Sweden and the swedish way of live and think (just be yourself, free to be whoever you are, live like you want as long as you respect and dont harass others -that is what I find "swedish living" just not a religious extremist gayhater/lovehater that like death sentences or wanna marry away your daughter when she is 16-18, and other crazy or violent things..) But those who hate swedish values- why are they wanna come if they dont wanna speak swedish or english or feel uncomfortable with equality? Lots of swedes are like that, that is VERY unswedish, like the sweden democrats that stand for hate of the unknown, exactly as some of the people they say they hate.. Strange.. well, well you seem to be a nice guy so wish you everything well here:-D greetings from sthlm

      You don´t have a clue I can tell. Sweden and U.S are pretty close to each other when it comes to ppl that working. But the unemployness in U.S are very often hidden in the statistics. Among ppl 20-34 there is almost exactly the same amount of people that have a university education, and among older there are actually a little fewer in Sweden that have been to uni (even though its free here). Its so dumb to think like you do, I was unemployed for only six months 10 years ago, I had my rent payed and little money for bills and food. But I became depressed! The most important thing is to have a place to go to, where you are needed, where you feel you are doing a good job and pay something back to society. maybe cause lots of Swedes think that way we can have our benefit system? People from other places, where you are fat and lazy maybe would accept to live like low lifer without job and have no money left when bills and rent are payed? Sounds like you would? No ppl wanna have a job to go to, and they who cant cause of disease, psychic illness or other problems deserve a suitable lifestyle and a place to live anyway! Dont you think that sounds humane? And what the fuck is wrong with equality??? I can´t understand it! Please tell why equality are wrong? To progress equality are needed, or are you a mulla who´s scared of strong women?

      I am an American that lives in Sweden. It's my observation that those who come to Sweden and are how you described above, are Refugees and Muslim. Muslims tend to want every place they go to conform to their expectations. It's not just in Sweden. It's unfortunate that there are people who come to Sweden and the government pays them an income that is more than the average Swede makes and they don't have to work or do anything for the income. They get everything for free. But, it is not Lagom (Jantalag) to look at that and to openly dislike the situation. Swedes can dislike it, just not openly. Because no one says anything about it, no one does anything about it. The government decides, and no one says anything. They just put up with it and try to tell themselves that it's okay because no one is better than anyone else. Swedes even give money to the "Economic Tourists" because they feel they are expected to even though the economic tourists don't contribute in any way to the Swedish Economy and way of life.

      Ernest Sanchez 81k a year? Yea... That'll get you very comfy.
      Average swedish salery is about 300-350k swedish crowns, one USD is like 8.7 swedish crowns(ish) so you'd land a hefty 712k SEK a year in Swedish crowns... More than twice the average working swedes income... At worst youd be upper class.
      No idea how or even *if* taxes influence your case but even in a worst case scenario youd still have more money than the average swede.

    Because of your degree from college it was possible for you to move to another country??? Seriously, what kind of ignoramus believes that he has to have a college degree to move to another country? I'm a junior high school drop out and landed in Europe back in 1961 with only $60.00 dollars in my pocket. I then spent the next five and a half years traveling all over the world. I worked in Norway and Iceland in the fishing industry, washed dishes in Germany, worked on a Kibbutz and in construction in Israel, taught English in Vietnam and Japan, and worked in construction in Australia. I also have seen more of Scandinavia than any Scandinavian and could have easily settled down there had I wanted to. Regarding Sweden; I'm glad I saw it when it was Sweden back in 1961/62/63/64 and later in 1968. Because when I went back there in that hot summer of 2006 I could see that it was fast losing its cultural identity. In fact, Sweden is fast becoming an Orwellian nightmare where truth is treason and punishable by imprisonment or a heavy fine, or both. So bear in mind that Swedes are decadent to the point of applauding their own extinction.

      Dipendra Kundu, the only thing that is dumb is your inability to intelligently refute any part of my initial statement. After all, any halfwit can make disparaging comments about it but trying to disprove it would most likely be too intellectually challenging for you. In fact, I called Bruce Wayne out on such matter but, as you can see, he turned out to be a paper-tiger.

    I might be a bit late but, please don't come here. We have no jobs, no housing, and there is nothing to gain by living here. I love Sweden but at the moment we can't take more migrants. And you seem like a kind person and kicking you out after you already moved is rude. It's nice to see that you are adopting the Swedish ways of life. Still, don't come here...

      This is not an asylum seeker you idiot. You can move pretty much anywhere in the world if you can support yourself financially. Also, don't tell me there are no jobs. I'm Swedish, lived in Brazil for a few years, and when I landed in Sweden again on a Wednesday I already got a job interview for Thursday, I was hired on Friday and began working the following Monday. My ex-wife, being Brazilian, got a job and an apartment in a few weeks time only after moving to Sweden at a later time. Sweden's economy is one of the best developing in Europe right now.

      You're not wrong. Housing is an issue. You will end up living in migrant-dominated neighborhoods, as do many of our swedish students. We hope we are on the right track now with rising nationalism and busting the international-liberal cultural-marxistic fake news. Actual nazis have registered a parlamentary branch and entered into the democratic system just in time for the election now in 2018.
      The nationalists cannot avoid forming a majority government without getting backstabbed by the moderates and the christian democrats(if they make the 4% cut). It would take every other party combining into a soup that would damage them all, from which they could get nothing done and a re-election favoring the nationalists would result. Or a coup. Or a rebellion, worst case civil war. Not likely.
      Long story short, the nationalists will start to seriously implement changes. This will pave the way for the actual nazis, who will likely reach the needed 4% to become a support party in the near future of 2022 or 2026, if things keep going the way it seems!
      That said, things are improving EVEN with a red-green non-majority ruling coalition at the moment. Applying for asylum a second time after hiding(and collecting welfare payments even though lacking identification) from the government to avoid expulsion, has gone down from a 61% acceptance rate into a more reasonable 5% acceptance rate.
      There was a honor killing recently, a man was abducted and killed for having an affair with a married woman. Out of the six people sentenced, five of them were given life sentences(said woman included), while the sixth was sentenced to 18 years in prison and expulsion upon release.
      We don't have the death penalty, 18 years is the harshest prison term barring life. Paying for all this is a shitfest, costing millions of SEK for every perpetrator just in their appointed defense. But given the current legislation, things are going IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
      We need to wait until 2018 until we start to see the REAL changes. Like massively boosted police force and secret services to enforce all the migration-related administration we need them for, things like revocation of residency permits and citizenships that were granted on false premises, things like revocation of said residency permits and citizenships upon entering into crime, of expelling criminals in every case assuming they have a second citizenship or residency, of properly logging the biometrics of every perpetrator/migrant and of properly following up and identifying every one of these 'paperless' migrants, such as nationality for relocation purposes. Hell. Follow up even the ones that provided identifications! We won't miss anybody that did not enter the nation through the correct channels anyway. We already have proper migration policies after all. Kick out every asylum seeker if able. Hell, have them apply for 'normal' migration. No sense in wasting people who come here with a work ethic that we would lose anything from.
      Today... Today some municipalities and cities grant things like welfare payouts to people even without proof of residency or anything! But they pretty much have to... The city of Malmö would collapse if they didn't. It's our southern-most major city, and migrants prefer warmer more urban environments after all. It's good to have most of them collected in the same area. Pity about the daily shootings, though. They mostly fight with their own kind, so it's not a super bad situation. Not even a massive enough drain on the state as they could be, as it is impossible to police the infected neighborhoods. Not to mention that things like ambulances, fire trucks also get rocks thrown at them... They have access to assault rifles, but so far they haven't really used them against our social elements. Or against each other. But the time will eventually come. Not quite favelas just yet. But we're getting there.
      Things are bleak, but they ARE improving. Gotta look this shit in the eye, not take comfort elsewhere with the PK trash that we are fed. Just keep calm and carry on. Democracy is a slow process. At least until we elect the nazis, but by then i feel that we would have most things sorted out.
      Just leaving the union would solve most problems. Just gotta get to work ranking down on that 'thegoodcountry.org' listing. Hell, if nothing ELSE told you that there is a huge problem, that index does!
