YES DAVE! Glad to see more people normalising bike weight. Sub 10KG = light af. Geometry and stiffness are more important for performance than weight. But also fook performance. Get the bike that inspires you to ride. ✌🏼
Hello mate!! I agree, like when did a 8/9kg bike become heavy?! I’m with you all the way on this!
I've just brought a Fairlight Strael steel road bike and quite honestly, I couldn't care less that it weighs more than my carbon road bike. Unless you're hill climbing or you live amongst mountains, sod the weight - just ride the bike!
Well said 🙏🏽
I went to see Bernard Hinault speak in Dallas back around 1990, there were a whopping 12 or so people there. By way of his French interpreter he said he didn't know what the angles of his bike frames were and that his favorite tires were those with air in them.
I think he was trying to convey to us that those things really don't matter that much. He had an early LOOK carbon frame bike on stage with him,
Likewise, I bet most raceway drivers don't hang around the pits all night looking at and wondering about valve springs.
However... I do think the weight of our bellies and butts do matter.
Especially the belly 😂😂😂
😂😂 well said Frank!
Dave i raced a Peugeot Roubaix on GP4s with tubs 12 speed 21lbs in 82 raced a 10 tt in 22:58 juvenile then returned to the sport 2007 rode a LOOK 765 at 7.5kg and cannot get near that time on a far lighter road bike great content Dave as always.
Oh that’s interesting. That Peugeot needs to come back out of retirement!
thanks Dave, an interesting chat and a bit informative as usual. My bike was Ribble cgr e-bike at around 14kg (and i often tried to stay power off mode). I decided to make it acoustic and stripped the motor and battery out (new back wheel required). It's now 10.7kg and feels very much more nimble.
Oh 14kg is light for an ebike right? Sounds like an interesting project.
@@DaveNoakes yes, 14kg is light for 'e'. The rear hub motors are quite heavy and you certainly feel the heft of the wheel when using it unpowered.
Yes another Noakes video! Always a better day
Aw thanks mate.
Look at all those bikes! Living the dream.
The only time I notice a weight difference is when I'm carrying my bikes upstairs. My track bike is around 9kg, which I think is pretty good for aluminum frame and aluminum wheels.
Thank you. I think 9kg is dead good. Most importantly do you enjoy riding it?
Don't worry about weight only if you are racing i ride a 25kg mountain bike great exercise hills no problem with low gears.
🙏🏽👊🏼
I got abot weight weenie with my serotta ottrott , got it down to just over 6kg , dont think it made it any faster to be honest, but it was fun trying to make it light on a budget
Damn that’s a light bike! I’m guessing it’s rim brake?
@DaveNoakes yeah rim brake dude
Hey man, can you tell what handlebar bag was that on the gravel? Looks too good
The colourful one? That’s by Cyclology the black is by skin grows back
@@DaveNoakes thanks a lot!
You’re welcome.
Dave, Can you tell us what the brand and model of the scale was that you used for this? All of the ones I am finding on ebay do not have this nice two hook thing to hang the bike from.
It’s the X tools scale I believe.
My bike and I together weigh only 164 lbs.
But what's more important is the joy of being out there. And having air in the tires.
Yes 🙌🏽
Dave whacking his bike with an allen key has been the highlight for me.
what happened to the white winforce or whatever it was called
Winspace, lovely bike but I had too many road frames so it has now moved on.
Loosing 5kg on my body is way cheaper than loosing 1kg on my bike.
I think this would be the case for most. 😂
My stormchaser is 12kg with 700x50 and a 50T mullet build. Still did 112 mile race on it. My bikepacking/commuting Surly is 20.6 kg with racks/bags and 27.5x3" tires. Still ride it almost every day. I'd like to try something super light but I'm not sacrificing comfort to do it. Weight would matter if someone were paying me money to win races. But since that's not the case, I don't really care. Besides, the heavier the bike is, the less impact that extra sausage roll makes.
That’s the thing right?! You clearly love to ride that bike so weight just isn’t that important.
Still use 531 rim brake bikes so not really that fussed about weight. Comfort is more important and ease of maintenance . How about getting a Folding bike and do a review on one. Just been looking into them, quite an interesting concept if you dig into the options.
You’re using a classic set up there 🙏🏽 folding ebike or standard?
@@DaveNoakes Was looking at the classic standard folders . Brompton right down to Carrera .
I think you need more bikes 😂
Always
I only really noticed weight on my road bike once I got under 8kg, that was noticeable forsure.
So what you’re saying is I need another road bike one that’s under 8kg? ☺️
@@DaveNoakes haha Im always in support of another bike build!
Some like lugging heavy bikes around.
Some do
If I was around 80kg I’d be a weight weenie, but at my weight I need something solid under me, so I’m not too bothered, though my road bike is under 10kilo, gravel over 10kilo. I’m more in to comfort😁😊👍
I think this is a common thought. I used to be around 70kg and was very focused on bike and my own weight. Since stepping away from racing I’m now 80kg and really don’t care about bike weight.
Does the weight matter. Yes . For me since I have to chuck it up stairs, on and off buses it matters a little. Furthermore it adds to the comfort when it's a daily driver. Thirdly the lighter weight matters when climbing hills.
I lost count on how many you have. The best answer is You have more than One 😂😂😊😁
Good point, when I lived in london I was always lugging bikes up stairs. Now it’s just straight in the house/garage so weight is less of an issue.
ja less weight is good for drive a hill up or against the wind.
plus carry the bike everytime stairs up and down than you are happy if it is less weight 🙂
Very true.
@@DaveNoakes i had some years a cargobike and to carry something like this the stairs up and down is no fun. so now with my funmachine it is lightyears better 🙂
Nothing matches custom steel though, Dave!
Very true
Not sure what my bikes weigh, I think my touring bike must be around 12kg and is my heaviest. It is also the bike I have my 160km and 200km PB on...
My stayer is heavier than my carbon bike and it’s the one I have most pbs on.
I tried to keep my weight, (body weight)as light as possible. I can't afford thoes light weight bikes 😅
