Presentation: 2020 International Forum on Youth Student Panel
For the second year in a row, College of the Canyons will host an International Forum on Youth on November 16-19, 2020, which will highlight the challenges faced by today’s young people through lectures, scholarly presentations, and other virtual events.
Hosted by COC’s International Services & Programs, the four-day forum was designed to help foster strong scholarship among faculty, form connections with international scholars, encourage dialogue on challenging topics that are timely and international by nature, and generate interest among faculty, students, and staff for projects and education abroad.
The 2020 International Forum on Youth will feature scholars and experts from Australia, Morocco, and other nations, along with COC professors, who will provide insights into today’s youth based on their respective areas of expertise.
The forum will include a student panel that will offer COC students a chance to voice their perspectives.
For more information about the 2020 International Forum on Youth, please email cocglobal@canyons.edu.

    Student Panelist:
Wei-Ni Lin - COC Student from Taiwan
Wen Tzu (Susan) Lin - COC Student from Taiwan
Ysabella Colwell - COC Student from Canada
Hello! I am a Canadian student in my first semester at College of the Canyons, hailing from Calgary, Alberta. I was a ballerina for 15 years and originally moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the arts, but after a nasty car accident and subsequent injury, I had to re-evaluate. My excitement to go back to school was emphasized by how easy it was to apply and go to College of the Canyons. I am a Psychology major, and my goal is to complete my Bachelor’s degree at UCLA and go on to get my Ph.D. to start my career as a therapist. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for over 5 years, but Santa Clarita is one of my favorite areas to spend my time. The weather is definitely the best adjustment from Calgary (the winters can get to -40 degrees Celsius), but the year-round hiking and proximity to the beach make it that much better! So far I’ve really enjoyed the variety of classes offered at COC, and the care and time all my professors have put into their work, as well as the flexibility that allows me to take classes around my personal schedule. I would truly recommend this school to anyone who doesn’t want to pay over $20K for their first two years of school (so anyone).
Jace Trinidad - COC Alumni at UC Riverside
A fun fact about myself is I've never been to any other American state; I'm a California gal through and through. I lived in Oakland in my late teens/early twenties but my heart was born, raised, and currently resides in the LA area. Before transferring to UC Riverside (my current institution), I was a sociology major at College of the Canyons. At the end of my academic journey, I hope to find myself back at a community college, either teaching or working in Student Affairs.
Yinghua Yu - Ph.D. candidate from Western Sydney University
I came from mainland China and currently undertaking my doctoral research at the Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University, in Australia. My project is about the lived experiences of the only-child generation of Chinese professional women who migrated and work in Australia. It is cross-disciplinary research, with an aim to draw on theories from work sociology, migration studies, gender, race, and professionalism to interpret new Chinese professional women's career, work, and life. My current goal is to finish my dissertation within the next 12 months, and my long-term goal is to work in research and make a small difference in my chosen direction. Something interesting about myself: I am a 'MasterChef', who is passionate about food and sharing it with my friends and family. I love 'referring' to other chefs' recipes but always intend to create my own - 'Yinghua's specialty'.
