Great video. The Safari was always my favourite rally.Back to the 70s I was a Munari and Lancia Fulvia and Stratos supporter. No luck for them.I had to wait for the mighty Lancia Delta Integrale and Miki Biasion in the late 80s to see an italian driver in a italian car winning the Safari, the best and most challenging rally in the world in my opinion.
I was also a Sandro Munari and Lancia Stratos fan . I remember as a lad walking to the petrol station, think it was an Agip on Mombasa Rd, to see the car being services. Great memories. When IJeremy Clarkson's Lancia vs Audi story is epic rallying history. And now you can buy a Lancia Stratos, as seen on Top Gear, to drive your dream.
Superb video! The safari rally has always been such an epic event, I love watching these older recaps to get an idea just how nuts it truly was. Makes the rally america events I've run in seem like a walk in the park.

I remember watching this on a B/W TV that stood on 4 legs while in primary school. My young mind then still recalls the driver names to date and there were many Vitanen's Mouton's Kirkland's Mikkola's in my village 😂. The kids at 5:45 & 14:28 reminded me of myself, it is how we used to catch a glipse of the safari cars. (I wonder if any those kids know they were caught on video, though very likely not.) Any of them, including the grown ups whose faces were caught on camera, would be ecstatic to see themselves today, 40yrs later, in this video!
23.50 - 24.09, the pride of Kenya. A locally developed group B Peugeot 504 pick up mixing it up with the best from Europe and coming out strong. That was the late Johnny Hellier who finished 8th overall in the event.
Michelle Mouton finished third in an Audi Quattro. As she and her co-driver Fabrizia Pons fielded questions from the media,a local journalist asked her,"how does it feel to be a women"...the Journalist intended to ask,"how does it feel as a woman competing in the highest levels of motorsports". The poor guy was cut short with the response,"how does it feel to be a man".
I don't think so ,losing this rally, yes we all know why has changed the w.r.c. for ever,and including these sprint type rally's is for me killed dead the wrc.

this the 1983 rally where the French women came third in the Safari I was there to see . I have always watched the Safari Rally every year since 1974.
My grandfather was a rally driver in the 80s in kenya and he drove the Lancia Stratos
