César Antonovich Cui (18 January 1835 -- 13 March 1918) was a Russian of French and Lithuanian descent. His profession was as an army officer and a teacher of fortifications; his avocational life has particular significance in the history of music, in that he was a composer and music critic; in this sideline he is known as a member of The Five, the group of Russian composers under the leadership of Mily Balakirev dedicated to the production of a specifically Russian type of music.

Cui is today by far the least well known of the Mighty Five. He elected to compose suites and collections of short pieces, keeping them light and eschewing profundity. Taken on their merits, they are delightful, and this collection is typical of his works. (He's also known as the author of a review of Rachmaninov's First Sym that was so hostile it drove the young Rach into a deep depression. But that's another story.)

Cesar Cui was the "forgotten" member of the five from the group Sct Petersborg: Balakirev, Rimskij-Korsakov, Musorgskij, Borodin and Cui.

      He is not lost.
There is a lot of his material to cover, I am one that thinks his stories are worth it.
      Not lost. Needs more mentions.

    C. Cui once told Pjotr Tchaikovsky that he could find out new melodies just when playing cords on the piano.

+Xijin : Yes, it is a very sweet composition. Have you heard Borodin's notturno from his second quartet? It is the third movement from that quartet. Cheers
