  • The songs featured here are from the album Lester Flatt - Gospel. I did slow down the video for the last minute or so to keep from editing the song.

at time 4:36 there is a cleared off section of earth to show the coal seam. on the right is a big block of coal with a stone structure around it this is called the fountain. a friend of mine was walking past this & had a stroke. he would have lived but he hit his head on the fountain.

at time 4: 25 on the right is an old bar that is thought by the young locals as the place where hank stopped & played music for those celebrating the new year. it was in the 60s movie & everybody believed it. it was bought by Vikings linebacker Lonnie Sammy warwick in the 70s. on the left is a ginos, while being built in 1978 my brother in law was electrocuted.

at time 10: 50 is the glen jean exit. this was completed in the late 70s. I once lived in glen jean & its mostly black folk. there is a family there named newsome. the kids came to my house a lot & there were 20 of them. best kids ever. when I started to move from there my dog could not be found. she had been following them home a lot & she had a lot of play friends there. i asked if they had seen my dog & they all said no. so I told them that they could have her & they all said alright ! later I was watching a w va football game & a newsome won the game my brother in law said that it was so and so from that family, I was happy for the whole family. the reason why I remembered this is that a lot of people have been killed at the glen jean exit. it just brought back the memory of mrs newsome the 1st to die at the glen jean exit.

I cant imagine finding my child dead.

I have a very dear friend who is old enough to be my dad. he is from a little place at the left of glen jean. when young he joined the navy. he came home to Scarbro for a few days leave in his 56 ford. when leaving he took with him a washing machine. wrapped up with rugs & the trunk lid tied down tight he left for Norfolk. now all that we had then was those old roads that Jeffery took us on, no interstate or 4 lanes. so my friend beau went through Fayetteville. at his own admittance he went through that town a little fast. guess who was on duty, yeah, Tuni, Americas youngest chief of police. Tuni got after beau & both just had to show off their driving skills. until Tuni died he always told the story of chasing Beau with that stupid washer in the trunk. coming out of Fayetteville there are curves & it seems that every few 100 feet there is an up & down hill. Tuni said that when he topped a hill Beaus tail lights would be going over the next 1. when rounded a curve Beaus tail lights would be going around the next. Tuni would not give up until he got to that left road at the front of that camper, he just didn't know which way Beau went straight ahead or to the left. besides that road to the left was a real killer & that was the way Beau went. Tuni always said that Beau was the best driver he had ever chased.

on the right by the camper is a direction sign. it tells how far to prince if you take the left road Just in front of the camper. a few miles from where Jeffery pulled over is the small town of Fayetteville. it is known for 3 things. the great arch bridge, having the youngest chief of police in America, 27 when he took the job & that chief, tuni hunsacker, was cassius clays 1st pro fight. they honored each other for the rest of hunsackers life. many years later at his retirement a not so healthy & retired boxer & ex world heavy weight champ by the name of mohammed ali showed up with a few of his friends & honored his old friend.

at time 11: 27 on the right is the entrance to glen jean. in the 80s a man & woman that I had watched grow up were sitting on the concrete guard wall when across the street a robbery was taking place at a gas station as the robbers ran there was a shootout & the young man was hit in the head & died. his sister watched him die. a few years before she had won 2nd in a beauty contest, such memories.

at time 3: 50 at the foot of price hill on the right is a dirt road that turns back up price hill. in the 1950s there was a bar here in the wide area. much to the disagreement of so many locals who aren't old enough to know better at this bar is where hank Williams was discovered dead.

at about where our man with the camera said he had his 1st accident back in the 50s a coal truck lost his breaks there. of course he got on the c b & told where he was at & what had happened. some lady in mt hope had hers on & she started telling everybody what was happening. it is said that it took little time for people getting their cars off the street & the parking at the sidewalks. the intersection at mt hope then was different there was no triangle to separate the lanes. the driver said that he was coming through town he could not make the curve. in a few minutes those that were close to that end of town saw him top over that last hill everybody could hear the roar of a taxed out jake brake & see a cloud of brake smoke billowing behind him. as you can tell there was no problem in the 1st part of town. now the right turn & up hill then the left turn. here is where parking meters & anything else too close were sacrificed. as he went down the other side there is another curve, unmakeable. so he went up that very narrow 1 way street destroying almost everything on both sides remarkably no one was hurt probably due to the c bs

at time 4: 10 on the left is an old coal mine right beside the road. in 1966 a methane detonation killed a crew. I knew 1 man. I had a pic of his wife holding their newborn. ive known her all of my life I think shes a grandma now.

at time7: 00 on the right walking the sidewalk were 2 young black men a few years younger than me. 1 was of average height the other a 15 year old 7 foot giant, Earl too tall Jones. there are 2 giants that came out of mt hope, Jones & another 7 footer whom I have never met, he is called goose.

here on the right at time 15: 45 is a little gas station & grocery. 1 of my oldest friends worked here a few years ago. 1 night her brother pulled up outside but didn't get out of his car. she went out to see what was wrong. he & his wife had split up. he finally accepted the fact that she was a slut, but he couldn't handle that. he had a revolver in his hand & was crying. she talked to him but he had decided to end it. she called the police & he couldn't persuade him either. david put the gun to his head, the cop broke out the back door window, but david was determined. amongst her screams & the cops pleas david pulled the trigger. I many times wondered why he would do that in front of his sister. they were so close.

at time 9: 05 there is a sharp left hand turn. I believe you can guess its name, yeah that's right, dead mans curve. its not named after the song by jan & dean. its named that because that's what it is just like the song only I know of no one who has walked back from there. I had an uncle that was drunk & didn't touch the brakes. he hit that curve so fast that he jumped the creek. he hit so hard that the coroner had to pull his dentures from his throat. people leaving mt hope drunk & not respecting that curve die in it. these people are locals & know about it.

I love your videos, I can see my old stomping grounds and listen to the best music at the same time. After I was married, we rented a 2 story house that was built in 1821 or 1824. The way to the house was turn on N. Sand Branch Road where the Appalachian Bible School is and go straight 5 or 6 miles and it sits on the right facing the road, if you pass the house there is a place where they used to get dirt and rock about a mile past the house on the right. It was in 1975 that I lived there and I might not be exact about the mileage to that house. If you ever film that area , will you please film that historical house ( nice but not fancy ). There is a bit of history about the place if you are interested. Please send me a message at nancymiller007@bellsouth.net
