Its so hard to tell but he might be, but the recording is def alternate picked because it gives the riff that tone. Its not oppressively hard to down pick it, it just doesn't sound right.
Downpicking is not a hard technique. Plenty of thrash players use it and even at a higher speed. I play guitar and started Downpicking everything because I lack technique. It really comes easy after practicing it. Nothing any other experienced guitarist can't do.
Hey man, I love your video formats! Really awesome to see deep dives into specific tracks along with a full guitar play through! Especially on AJFA's most underrated (and my favorite) track. Cheers man, I had to sub!
Thank you adarkerstandard, that means a lot! Its one of my favorites so I felt that it was a good one to start with, blew my mind they havent played it in full since 1989.
hey! i believe james used his gibson ‘84 “so what” and his “more beer!” explorers for the entirety of recording justice as it was only until 1989 when he finally got his “EET FUK” guitar. otherwise great video and awesome look into the song! keep making these, i’ll definitely keep watching in the future!!!
I might be in a weird minority but this is my favorite track off the album. The heavy, marching rhythm and lyrics that are more true now than when they were written. The whole song is underated imo. This, the title track and Shortest Straw and my top three on AJFA.
DOESNT MATTER WHAT YOU SEE, OR INTO IT WHAT YOU READ! man, this is the most aggressive James Hetfield has ever sounded, on any recorded song. I learnt this when I was 15, it helped me to double pick the E string.
Hi Brian! What is in your opinion the part written by Kirk? The pre-verse/bridge riff or the pre-chorus? (by process of elimination from the James riff tapes).
Great video and great work on the guitar. This is not an easy song to learn. I once read many years ago that this song was inspired by the trial laid against The Dead Kennedys over their album Frankenchrist. They were hit with an obscenity suit (typical for the hard right “moral majority” 1980s) that bankrupted and broke up the band. Interesting, now that I think about it, how all the AJFA political songs were soon abandoned by Metallica in their live concerts. It was clearly seen as a mistake or overreach, but it’s an interesting conclusion to their trilogy of 80s thrash albums. I should also note that the reappearance of this song’s riffs in St Anger’s Some Kind of Monster was very welcome and enjoyable, and really the only time that “Political Metallica” made a reappearance, even if it was in the service of metaphor for overcoming personal trauma. I also think that song, on another level, describes the making of the album itself, ala Smoke on the Water, but that’s just me. Thanks again!
great vid and song! A note about the pre-chorus: When James' vocal comes in, he switches from regular Root-fifth power chords to adding the E string to the chords in the same position as the A string. So the first chord after the open string was (starting with the E string) B, E, B, or 7 on E string, 7 on A string, 9 on D string. He doesn't do this often, and this song is one of the only times I've seen him do it. I had the "official" tab book, and they didn't catch this either. It always drove me crazy that it wasn't quite right when I was playing it, there was something heavier going on during that pre-chorus vocal. You can see it broken down in this vid: ua-cam.com/video/mfbyiDVtxww/v-deo.html
Hey thanks for the meticulous comment Mickey! After every video I see every nuance I miss when recording these Metallica songs, I just try my best to get the songs to a place I am comfortable with and provide some entertainment. Im glad you enjoyed the video and truly thank you for the insight, I completely missed it.
@@BrianWGuitar The intro and verses are pretty easy but things begin to get a bit more complicated at the bridge. The chord shapes are super cool, though. I am working on the chorus and bridge atm.
Hey hypnovertigo My Apocalypse is sick! Ill be covering The God That Failed at some point to! I havent spent too much time with that song so im excited to go in depth with it.
@@BrianWGuitar it's probably their heaviest song honestly. Very dry and brick wall like in atmosphere. Shame it's not known as one of their best. Unnamed Feeling is great too. Where the Wild Things Are is another favorite
It's a great song but it's no wonder Lars has a hard time with it. He has to actually think about the parts. We all know he is allergic to improving his craft since the 90's.
The only album where Lars sounds like Vinny Paul's drum style and arguably his finest hour. James has the best voice on this album for thrash metal. The whole look of the band on this album is imo their best and even though the bass is absent this album is definitely one of their best. Master of Puppets of course is their best but that too is debatable. Long live the Metal Titans 🤘🏼❤
@@BrianWGuitar for me its hard to pick just one favorite. If it's epic to me, then all that do are my favorite. Just too many good albums out there that are epic and out of this world in creativity and originality 🤘🏼

One of the most mysterious aspects of Metallica is definitely not their songs or album covers. Well at least up until the black album anyway. Really great stuff. But their merch man, and I’m especially talking about their t-shirts. The designs are goofy as hell and I would NEVER buy one, because they ain’t cool at all. So weird. Beholder, Blackened and Dyers Eve are the only songs me and my now dead drummer used to cover off that album. Beholder prolapses assholes man! 🤘😤🤘
Absolutely love this song. This was my anthem at 14. Great drum part too. I think the only thing I’d get rid of is the flange on James’s vocals.
Yea robert its a fucking sick song
Yes, totally agree! AJFA doesn't have a bad song.
Fucking love the album but Im not too fond of the title track 😂. But it is killer!
The song structure is a little riff salady but it's still not bad.
Yea Id agree with that.
@@BrianWGuitarit seems that they had 125 riffs left and decided, ok let's use all of it in one song.

I love this song, the first couple riffs are so heavy.
I think the only thing the song was missing was a tempo change partway through the song. I think that would have made it really good
Yea erik that could be sick
How did you get that spot on guitar tone?
The IR really does a lot of the heavy lifting for the tone.
Definitely one of my favorites off of Justice, that main riff will never not be cool.
