  • In March of 2015, the Atheist Foundation of Australia hosted atheist activists Matt Dillahunty, Aron Ra and Seth Andrews (under the tongue-in-cheek tour title, "The Unholy Trinity Down Under"). This is the audience Q&A session from Brisbane on March 18.
    The speakers' presentations from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne are posted on AFA's tour website: www.unholytrinitydownunder.com
    Special thanks to the AFA: atheistfoundation.org.au

    University is such a great tool for secularising people, because learning about the actual nature of reality leaves far less room for magical thinking.

    You don't say too much during the Q&A sessions Seth, but when you do, you have so much heart. "Squishy" really is an appropriate name. I'm seeing more than ever how balanced this tour is: you've got "the heart," "the academic," and "the rebel." I greatly admire you all.

    16:54 - What makes a religious moderate? Here's my test:
    1. Are they non-violent?
    2. Do they oppose a theocracy?
    If the answer to both is "Yes", then they're a moderate.

    @43:58 or thereabouts, this question is raised rather often, & frequently there is a slight tinge of disapproval that 'women' don't fight against their oppressors...
    The human race has LONG considered females to be inferior, less intelligent, etc.
    This situation is exacerbated in ALL of the Abrahamic religions, which currently seem to be the most egregious & notorious for this sort of abusive bias.
    As a female atheist, observing that most atheists here in the U.S. are coming from a Christian background, it appears that some pollution of that bias from the Abrahamic religions does remain, due to their Christian/Jewish/Muslim upbringings.
    To this day, there is quite an onus on the downtrodden females to free themselves - only to receive criticisms & often insults (even from some in the atheist community) when they try to do just that.
    Religions especially take advantage of those who are told by society that they were born "BROKEN"; also ironic since nowadays the religions are largely the ones pushing that teaching in the first place.
    And then the religions claim to have the 'fix' for being born 'broken' - being born female.

    If someone who believes in the Bible were to really stop and think about the way this book was actually put together it would be very hard for them to not at the very least question it, this I guess is one of the reasons why those who believe in it try to steer clear of this question, which is strange because on the one hand they think they have good reasons to believe this book was divinely inspired by a supreme being and yet if they don't know or care who most of the authors of it were or how it was put together then there's no way they can actually have a reason for believing it was divinely inspired.
    For example, if I know people who are incapable of writing any kind of a book and they suddenly get the need or urge to write one and this book seems to make a lot of sense in and of itself in a way that I know they couldn't and this book claims to have been inspired by some higher being, I might then have grounds for looking at the possibility that they were taken over in someway by something outside of them but if I don't know who wrote a book and how many other books or writings they may have done or what sort of person they are, I will have no reason to think that any of their writings are any more divine than anything else they've ever written in their lives because I will have nothing to compare it with to be able to say that this is not just their ideas that are being expressed in the book.
    If something is designated as 'divinely inspired' then presumably the people who give it that designation have a concept of what is NOT divinely inspired otherwise it's a meaningless thing to say, you could just say that any writing is divinely inspired, the committee that actually put the Bible together as we know it today give or take further amendments etc must have had a criteria for deciding what was divinely inspired which is why they rejected certain books from being in the Bible as we know but here's the problem, who gave that committee the authority to decide which books were of God and which weren't?, did this God himself choose them?, if so then where are the records in the Bible or anywhere that tell us who God would choose to put together all the writings?, there aren't any of course, so this committee was self appointed, human beings who took it upon themselves to decide (in their opinion) which scrolls had a supreme being behind them and which didn't, this is where the whole thing falls down like a house of cards and unless someone can give me a good reason why I or anyone should trust the judgement of the Canon who selected and put together the Bible of today then there's no point in them telling me 'the Bible is the word of God' blah blah blah because it clearly isn't, it's the word of men, that's all that has been established.

      I was brought up catholic. When I grew up and started exploring religion I read a book called "who wrote the bible " I became atheist almost immediately not just because I had gained the knowledge that we don't for the most part know who wrote or when it was written and very little historical mention outside of the bible. Oh and being lied to for years about Catholicism and religion in general. Life is so much better not living a lie

    One of the few things achieved by the SNP in Scotland has been the banning of teaching creationism in state-funded schools. This is not to say that there has been much progress regarding the continual division of schools into "catholic" and "protestant", however...especially among primary/elementary/grade schools. Perhaps removing this false boundary can be the next (and just as important) target of legislation, but I doubt it ; this is the country that spawned Calvin after all. Sorry about that.
    I'd agree with MD vis a vis having people give up religion for their own good reasons rather than having yet more law banning things, except that in the UK there is no legal protection of free-speech, so I'll take legislating against religion over something we never had in the first place even though it's a bad precedent.

      I make it a point to distinguish the belief from the believer, and the religion from the culture. That said, I don't let anybody hide behind societal conventions.
      "That's offensive!" is a statement, not an argument.
      "That's racist!" is not an argument either, though I prefer to avoid any hyperbole that could constitute racism, as the concept of "race" is next to meaningless from a genetic standpoint.
      The person offended owns the offense.

    • @damianeadie510
      @damianeadie510 8 років тому

      +BlackEpyon I get that. I try to apply the 'Hate the Sin and Love the Sinner' approach myself on most occasions and go lightly on them... but that falls apart sometimes when I deal with arrogant and wilful ignorance :-) You're right too - that race is unsound as a concept, but then what is it about 'races' that freak each other out? It's more the perceived differences in behaviour/values I think - which is for the most part cultural. (and that is not just country of course, I'm thinking how Beverly Hills and South Central have cultures / subcultures)...
      Anyway, the trends in law are different - so when someone says you are racist, they may mean something different to what we think it should mean... We should still take their thinking/feelings into account even if they are mistaken, confused or as some are, downright dishonest.

    • @BlackEpyon
      @BlackEpyon 8 років тому

      Damian Eadie
      I would think that lawyers would know better than to confuse race with religion. I hope they're not all like that, or I might have to take them back to school on basic definitions.
      Regardless, I do not hold any idea above criticism, regardless of who holds it. And I expect that standard to be applied to me as well.

    Matt still needs to try harder not to humiliate people on knowledge and vocabulary issues. There is a A HUGE education gap in America (also here in Canada) and we need to be shown to be the more caring ones. Agressively showing someone wrong rarely wins arguments (in such a person's view). Most Christians I heard on matt's show, I felt, wanted reassurance that atheists didn't believe them to be immoral or insane people, which they aren't, mostly.

    For one, I'm not offended at all, of the atheist'existence.
    Secondly, the atheist always talk of reason, but how can they develop reasonable information without outside revelation to their reason. This is called irrational idelogical reasoning.
    An atheist can not define right from wrong and the sense of morality!
    Would the atheist give a full approval of the people in prison because of their rational reasoning?
    What makes the atheist correct in determing their fates?

    • @TheThinkingAtheist
      @TheThinkingAtheist  9 років тому +24

      built4speed101 Atheism = a non-belief in deities.
      Simple. The assertion that "outside revelation" is necessary assumes the outside Other. I'm guessing that, in your case, that Other has a specific name and specific characteristics.
      The atheist simply says, "Demonstrate that this Other exists." So far, we remain stuck with apologist acrobatics like the one presented above.
      Moral/ethical behaviors are explainable and observable in the evolutionary model. Prisoners are imprisoned because human beings developed codes and courts of law. (Side note, the vast, vast, vast majority of convicted felons believe in God). According to the Global Peace Index, the most peaceful nations on earth are largely non-religious (New Zealand, Japan, etc...with the hugely religious USA ranked well below 80). And honestly, if you need an Invisible Friend to tell you that murder, rape, torture, slavery, deception, etc are wrong, the atheist clearly isn't the one with the problem. -Seth

      The statistics are accurate. No one is saying they are not, but the only thing we find to be erroneous is the mere fact that they assert it is misogyny or sexism that is the root cause for the pay gap, when in fact it is a lot more complex. When you factor in maternity leave, the fact that men on average go into fields where the jobs pay more. Some women raise children and enter the workforce late, or vice versa. That's it.

    • @rhondah1587
      @rhondah1587 9 років тому

      leadnofro I think you arguments are old and tired misogynistic BS BTW there are quite a number of women who never have children thus never take leave. Men also should have leave to be with their newborn. In the US, maternity leave is not paid leave and should be. If men were having the babies, I guarantee it would be paid leave. It is misogyny as men are still placing women as less valuable in every area of society just based on the fact that women have historically been portrayed as property of men, not worthy of being counted as an intellectual equal.

    I've never seen a pay gap between men and women. Maybe it depends on the type of work , but at my job ( grocery store) worm and men cashiers both make the same minimum wage , maybe in management there's a difference but of course I'm not allowed to see the check stubs and stuff.
    Also it's absurd to let a man use a woman's bathroom just because he feels like a woman. Whose to say where or not he's a rapist or a child molester and he follows a girl/women into a stall ? Same for a woman. What of she follows a little boy into a stall and fondles him or follows a grown man into a stall and knocks him out with a blunt object or a drug. Just because a women fondles a man doesn't mean he wanted it. It's an absurd idea to let opposite sexes use each other's bathroom. There is no way to keep people, especially children , safe

    Another point around 10 mins by Dillahunty...
    I don't see why he emphasizes the need for diversity in a movement. If only say 10% of of the atheist movement consists of women, and it's not due to discrimination, it's likely due to simple biological factors leading to a lack of interest. I think it's futile to force "equality" by aiming for a magical number of each identifiable group to be within a movement.

    How can someone so devoted to the truth, like Matt, believe in the pay gap. I mean the smallest amount of research into the subject would lead him to the truth on that.

      Why do I get the impression that Nunya + Archdemon are both male, and don't work for the NHS? My pension goes to my wife should I predecease her, but not the other way around, and unless one does private work on the side, one still earns less as a female employee...
