The hobby went in the crapper with grading. When I was a kid you opened a pack and saw who you got, your buddy opened his and you traded if you had duplicates. I watched the kids of the 1980's and as soon as they opened the packs they went straight to the Becket to see what they were worth. Now I only collect pre-war cards now, and glad to have them in any condition, I read the bio and wonder what it was like to play then I honestly don't worry about the soft corners or the loss of gloss, I think their cool just as they are.

The hobby went into the crapper when kids from the 50s and 60s decided to buy back things from their youth that they (or their parents) had thrown away when they reached adulthood. Same thing happened to comic books. This wasn't necessarily a problem... until the massive speculation booms sprung up because of dummies that didn't understand how scarcity works. Why anybody would think that cards from the 1980s would one day appreciate like cards from the 1950s did when everybody in the 1980s were taking care of them as collectables... it blows my mind in hindsight. The whole thing was mass stupidity on a grand scale. The big bust had already come and gone by the time grading became a big deal. The obsession with grading was merely a symptom, not the underlying disease itself.
I sold out in the 1989 to 1991 timeframe. I'd like to say it's because I was smart and I saw the writing on the wall... but in reality the prices at the time were insane, even for cards as recent as 1987... I was selling Bo Jackson 1987 Topps rookie cards to dealers for $5-$6 each and they were moving them for $9-$10... But I wasn't smart, I didn't see the writing on the wall, I was worried I was making a mistake... But I needed money to go to college and build my first PC.
But even when factoring in inflation, I likely made out like a bandit. I sold my collection over a period of 12-18 months and made roughly $3500 ($7500 in 2022 dollars)... If I had to buy back my collection, I can't imagine it would cost me more than $2500 unless the gems of my collection from the mid 70s thru early 80s all graded out in my favor (which is highly unlikely)

Yes I stopped in the mid 90's and now getting back into it. Looked at the hall of fame rookies I have and watching this video makes me happy to know I have some cards at least worth something even if not very much.
oh yeah- I buy only "my teams" Dodgers, Kings (hockey) ?Carolina Panthers! I like having them! its crazy now to think people are spending 20 a pack in hopes of getting a card with a piece of a cleat or a cut up jersey

Yes, strictly for enjoyment. I buy raw cards from the 50's and 60's. I have quite a few 1956 Brooklyn Dodgers.Don't care if they are perfect but do like them better if centered. Collected the entire 1969 Mets team and been getting many of the 1965 Topps because I think they were the best designed cards ever made,and 1967 cards. I only buy HOF's or real good stars. I own one graded card 1956 Carl Furillo

Funny u should mention to give a kid a card and make him happy. I was out back when peyton manning was going strong and I was at a mall doing nothing I guess but waiting on my wife and this is bfor grading got big. But I had about 8 manning cards that was various rookies and I saw about 4 kids running into the card shop and I stoped them and ask if they like collecting cards, they said yes, so I ask who they liked in football, they said Paton manning and i gave each one 2 TV a piece. They were flabbergasted they loved it, they were aching and oohing all the way into the shop I had a wonderful day that day. I have 15 grandkids now and many years has passed and I wonder if those kids remember that but I have 15 glides and I collect for them I have some beautifully graded stuff and some gem ment stufff so I wanna thank you for your video
Love that you shared your story. Thanks for that! I do it all the time, for Halloween we just bundled cards in 30 packs and handed them out. It gets kids excited and starts up young collectors. Why not spread the joy with a random act of kindness?
I use 90's cards as shredded packing material. Cost is low and gets rid of worthless paper. Aaron is prob. $8 in that condition because the graded ones make the other less desirable

i send 500 card psa orders in top loaders all the time. Just remember to tape the top of each so the card cannot move during shipment. Just because a card was newly pulled from a pack does not guarantee a high grade like your frank thomas. There was probably a flaw you missed on that one

Also I think Centering on the old Cards should be weighted more that corner wear as it was notoriously hard to find well centered cards in certain sets. I think that is why cards dont get gem mint 10s more than anything.
Yup. I remember possessing and eventually selling a 1980 Rickey Henderson rookie card, traded with a dealer for the card in the 1986/87 timeframe and sold it in 1989. The card had sharp corners, seemingly in plastic it's entire life which was rare back then, no gum staining, no wax staining, colors were on register..... but damn that lack of centering. I don't think any cards I ever saw from 1980 Topps were properly centered. The guy operating the cutting machine at the Topps factory had a year long coke bender or something... was just shaking and tweaking during the entire production run.
Of course back in 1989 when I sold it, PSA grading wasn't a thing. No stains, no creases, no obvious color issues, no bad corners... that was all you needed for perfect 10 uber-mint as far as dealers and collectors were concerned. Only really really awful centering flaws would make anybody take pause.... it was was so common in that era of cards... particularly the late 70s into the early 80s. I would be curious as to how that Rickey card would grade out today assuming it's still in the same condition. In every other aspect, I'm sure it was an 8 or better... but it was visibly off center.... I'd guess a 6 or 7.
Everything now is graded... meaning those cards will NEVER go out of circulation. It's not like in the 50's, 60's, 70's, etc. when kids would handle the cards and wear them out... and throw them away. With every card collector sending in HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of cards to get graded every month, there is no danger of these cards getting thrown away or damaged. THUS... there will be just as many in 10 years as there was today if the card has value.
Add to that the sticker auto and player worn garbage that Panini and Topps are putting out now, and the market is absolutely saturated with the stuff. Unless you get an elite player auto that will always hold value... most autographed cards sell in the $15 - $25 range... which is insulting considering the boxes now cost $200 for the middle of the road stuff, and group breaks are in the $75+ range just for a chance to get that $25 auto.
Panini/Topps have made a new junk era, and people are going to see in a few years that all these cards that they slabbed and paid $100 for are worth about 1/4 of that due to sheer volume available. Every "limited run product" has a 1/1, /5, /10, /25, /50, and /99 version of an auto. That means there are 190 of those cards available. Most do /150 and /250 versions as well... which makes that number go up to 590. And, that's JUST for that set... say Immaculate. They still signed 10,000 more stickers for Definitive, National Treasures, Museum, Bowman, Prizm, Leather and Lumber, Donruss, Diamond Kings, Gypsy Queen, Topps Series 1/2, Tier 1, etc. etc. etc. For any player out there worth signing a card... there are 10,000 versions of his autograph floating around. People really only chase the low serial numbered cards or the elite player/rookie autos. I remember when Jason Tatum and Donovan Mitchell redemptions were selling for $5,000+ because they hadn't signed their stuff yet. Now... those SAME rookie autos for National Treasures are selling for $150-$175 in real auctions... not those Probstein auctions where they bid on their own products.

If I understand correctly the best way to find valuable cards is see if you have hall of fame players or rookie cards of those players? I recently purchased a HUGE lot of 80's and 90's cards and Im trying to understand how to sort through them.

I trade with my friends kids. We go through each others doubles and trade 1/1 even swap. I get the new stuff and they get the old stuff. It's never about the money. All about the memories, stories and time spent.

I have some vintage 1954 baseball cards, as well as 1976 wonder bread all stars football cards. Collecting space here...

I sent 30 high grade cards to psa, and had to pay shipping, insurance, for sending and pay for return insurance. When I received my cards back, I know for a fact they weren't the same cards I sent in. What's sad is how many other people, particularly kids, have been getting taken like myself. Value wad around 35000, and what I got back was maybe 60 bucks on value. Don't trust PSA, IT'S A FARCE.

Thanks for telling people. I read the best thing to do is to go to a card show where Beckett is and get your cards graded right there on the spot. Then you don't have to pay for shipping or insurance. Plus your cards won't leave your sight.

I remember way back in 1990 my brother got a card straight out the pack and the card grader said it was not mint...although he was there when my brother opened the pack and pulled out the card...

It's going to take an awful lot of time to get rid of all the bullshit junk wax from the mid-80's to 2000, lol... You can get 1988 Topps baseball boxes for $5.00 all day.. To put that into perspective that would be like buying a box of 1958 Topps in 1988 for $5.00..... Cards from 1980-2000 will NEVER BE RARE, lol...
I know someone who buys the old boxes and sets for like $5-$10 and sells them for double the price. The 80's and 90's still sell. Everyone hates the 90's but I love the part of my collection that is from the 90's. 1990 donruss looks ugly but I love it.
I have 25 moving boxes full of baseball, basketball, football, hockey, nascar, little mermaid, and something called magic cards. They belonged to my wife's first husband who passed away over twenty years ago. I don't have a clue what to do with them. Any advice would be appreciated. I am not a card collector. Thanks
If you have any interest at all in sorting through them, I would recommend researching which cards you have with any value. Otherwise sell your lot of cards to whomever you choose to move them on to. Rookie cards are always desired of hall of fame players.

the 87 Jordan 9 O/C ...this is actually a 7 when knocked down 2 for the O/C. Collectors should be made aware of this.

People sell raw cards all the time on ebay, they get pretty good money for them too. I would recommend not to buy any ungraded old cards on ebay that are high value. People have been known to counterfeit them unless you know what the counterfeits look like.
psa cards can easily be opened. I dropped one by accident and the holder came apart. Also grading is very subjective. ie a 7 is likely no worse then a 6 and no better then an 8

Do they ever offer a service where you can schedule a time and sit with a reviewer to watch them grade your cards? I'd be down for that, even for 50.00 per card.. kinda like watching a mechanic work on your car, you hope they don't do anything screwy
This should be the way it’s done, but no such reputable service exists with the same desirability as the PSA or BGS graded cards.

+Bergen Pickers are missed prints worth anything ? I have a football card a 2007 rookie calvin johnson that I believe is a missed print card I've searched around 100 times with the card numer year and I get a card with a totally different image online on eBay or any site that has that issued numbered card. it doesn't even spear on the image Google search it's a upper deck 2007 the upper deck logo is on the opposite side and the image is way different but the back is identical to the other ones

if you think you have cards worth money , get a table at a local card show. you will have a better chance to sell your cards. But make sure the good cards are in a clean card holder . buy a beckett and find out some prices. enjoy doing shows just to sell off my extra cards. you get to meet so many other card dealers .
I believe when a card fan orders what they deem as vintage,they should get vintage , not junk wax era cards or heritage!😝

Some collectors like error cards. If yours are actual errors, they could be valuable to them.

It would all depend on the player, condition of the card and some other factors. Not all Rookie cards are valuable.

Yea, the highest that card ever booked was like $30-35, in that condition - even back in the day I couldn't see anyone paying more than $12-15 for the card - I mean the card is pretty rough... I mean even back in the day that's the type of card you would find at a card show in one of the $3, $5, $7 or $10 dollar mix & match boxes/bins (I've seen 73' Aarons in all those bins).... I highly doubt someone paid $58 for that card, I'm sure someone just put the card in that holder.

$58 for that card would never fly, even back in the day (I worked at a card shop throughout the 90's), the highest that card ever booked was like $30-35 in NM/M "high book" and no one could argue that is a NM card.. In 1994 that's a $10 card tops, certainly not $58 (even if it was mint) and today it's worth $3.00... You could probably get $5.00 even on ebay w/ free shipping.
Hey I'll buy it for $5.00 if you want to sell it.. I have (71) 1973 Aarons already - seriously I have 71, whenever I see the card and it's priced reasonably I'll buy it if it's less than $10...... That 1973 set is a nice set, probably one of my all time favorites.
You've got to remember, card shops used to charge all kinds of money for their stuff.
Just opened a safe full of cards that was in my basement, my dad said they were worth millions of dollars but he’s saving them... we out here broke 😂 lol, Idk, I’d rather buy land and go live off in the land than keep the cards, just me... but I kind of understand that there’s more value than just money in them...

my question is - I bought a 1980 ricky henderson card recently it pristine 10 graded but its grade by GEM ELITE now I've measured the card and its spot on 3 1/2 by 2and 7/16 and everything that I've look at on the card is perfect it seem evan the centering but I just hate the fact that its graded by GEM ELITE what should i do with this card ? keep it the same way or mayb resubmitting or sell it. I really like this card I like rickey but hate the fact its graded by GEM ELITE
It really all depends on what you’d like to do with it. If it bothers you that much, send it in to get it re-slabbed by PSA or Beckett. Not sure how much credibility this company has amongst collectors, but anyone with a good eye would be able to tell it’s a good card.
I have some very old black and white baseball cards that say "one of a hundred and fifty baseball subjects" on the back are they worth something?
Couldn’t tell you what they’re worth by this description. Not exactly sure which cards you’re referring to? They produce black and white reprints of old players now, hard to say without seeing photos.

Already had a box of old wax packs, cracked them open and sent them in for grading to see what they’d come back as. I don’t look to purchase cards from that era unless I like a specific player.
He said nothing from the 80's to current. We are currently seeing a new junk era in 2019 with EVERYTHING being auto/relic now. And... with sticker autos... Panini and Topps are producing 1000 or more of these cards that are supposed to be done on a "limited run."

I know this might be a stupid question to ask but, is ther any way I could pull up a list of names of different players all throughout the years and find out how much they're worth?
There are plenty of lists and price guides out there, but pretty much all of them are inaccurate. Especially for ungraded cards. You’ll never get an exact dollar amount for what a card is worth.

Would all depend on condition, if it’s raw or graded. If graded, what grade etc. depends on multiple factors. Also, the controversy about how many of them were actually printed for the purpose of collectibility when they first came out. Lots of factors. eBay sold listing could give you an approximation if what your card could be worth, yet keep your expectations at a manageable level.

All cards are worth something to somebody. A quick eBay sold items search should help you gauge value. A recent PSA 10 Chipper Jones Desert Shield RC sold for $14,000. The average Gem mint card sells for around $200. All depends on which version you have. Most collectors won’t pay a high amount unless they’re sold by a trusted dealer such as the PWCC

Is this really worth the time & effort as an investment??? I recently acquired a huge plastic bin & binder full of sports cards.. From what i've seen so far 84-93 give or take.. These are raw cards... Is it worth my time & effort or should I just torch the $50 worth of cards I got & take it as a lesson??? I've seen some cards that go good on ebay but they are mint 10 gems & these ones aren't =J was condering this as a investment hobby bc I come across cards all the time & hate the idea of passing something of great value as I'm into collectables in general but if it's not worth my money time & effort I'm done.. The era you’ve mentioned is considered the “Junk era” for a reason. Most wont even look at those years and would consider it to be an absolute waste of money. Buying cards for investing is a really bad idea. Do it for the love of collecting.

I am still trying to understand Grading Companies....what are the credentials of these graders that makes their decisions law? This grading is not Rocket science, educated card collectors can do the same job grading. How many graders do they use that they can bang out thousands of cards a week? How do you know they are not "switching" cards on customers? In short professional grading is a joke...sell your cards by negotiating with potential buyers yourself.
You’ve made valid points, and brought up issues that divide many current collectors. Some suspect switching, there have also been claims on authentic cards being returned as fakes etc.

Condition is subjective, cards are always worth something. Try checking eBay sold prices to give you an idea.

I don't blame you. Frankly, the only way to know market value on your card(s) is to have them graded. Pending grade, you can research sold prices. Best of luck to you.

Simply put... condition of the card. Other factors such as how the card was cut, errors, etc effects value as well. Graded cards sell higher. But sometimes some of the prices are inflated due to seller shenanigans.

An actual Hank Aaron rookie card is always valuable, pending condition. Any reprints, aren't.
How much for a 1916 Babe Ruth card?
1916 cards are very valuable. The highest value recently sold for $475 with a blank back. Most sell for much less. It’s the 1933 Goudey card which is more desirable.

Bergen Pickers I used to collect back in the late 80's early 90's when I was in elementary school...great memories! I just started last year getting back into looking into where the sports cards/memorabilia industry and hobby is and I have been reading a bunch of articles and watching videos and yea I think its such crap that your card can be "graded" as 7 right of a brand new package with no noticeable flaws. These grade companies are just ripping people off. Cards that are a "so called 9 or 10" are worth tons more than a card ungraded that look almost identical. I will never buy a graded card that is much more than an ungraded one that looks identical or get my cards graded. I will buy "raw" or ungraded cards, If they look mint or in decent shape i will buy them for the love of sports, the hobby, and nostalgia. I am glad the collectors see that! Thanks for the reply!

With today's technology and easy access to places like asia over the internet, ever wonder why you see cards that are rare ww2 Era that look gem mint? If it's too good to be true it probably is.
There is no grading companies in the record collecting world. You just trust the seller or ask for a soundclip. Why can't people just grade themselves and take a photo the card?

+Penny Montero That depends on multiple factors. Is there potential for a Rookie card that belongs to a Hall of Famer in it? Many of these cards are quite common and easily attainable. 1980's and on is loaded with surplus cards.

I think grading cards are going to ruin the hobby. It takes away the whole meaning of card collecting. To me it's like the stock market now. Collecting cards is supposed to be for kids who wanted their favorite players. I'm afraid that people will get burned out and will be left with expensive that aren't worth anything

I have thousands of Cards...all sports...some over 60 years olds...I wouldn't trust one of those dishonest bastards grading them unless I could watch there every movement from Jordon to Nolan Ryan...Joe Montana rookie years...there still minimum wage earning peoples...looking for that big score card.

If you're speaking in terms of value, that would all depend on which players signed it. If you're trying to sell it, your next step would be to have the autographs authenticated. Now, depending on who signed it, this maybe or maybe not worth your time and investment.

I bought the complete 1978 Topps baseball cards from a sports store back in 1989. Just wondering how my investment is today. Any clue sir.
Well, this is a complicated question to answer nowadays, but I'll try. A complete 1978 Set with all 132 Graded 9's and 10's recently Sold for $1,900 as of April 24th, 2019. At auction, the most recent ungraded set, sold for $346 on March 30th, 2019 all cards having been placed inside sheets in a binder. Condition of the cards were excellent to near mint. Now, keep in mind the star card is the Eddie Murray Rookie Card #36, and a PSA graded 10 Gem Mint recently sold for $17,600 at auction on March 17th, 2019 by PWCC (Highly reputable dealer). Bergen Pickers thank you for your extremely quick response. Mine have been in a binder as you described. I think I’ve made my money back haha. A side note. I painted a mans house back in 2007. He had multiple (did I say multiple) sets of Topps in the original boxes never opened. From 1951 up to the present. He gave me 4 Yaz cards ( 1 rookie) when I got done.

Well, it could be that one is highly graded graded, the other isn’t. It could be condition, illusions of grandeur by the seller. Could be all kinds of different factors, depends on which cards we are talking about.

WHY THE STORY WITH GMA GRADING ?
Inaccurate ratings, low quality slabbing, lack of transparency on the grading process seems to be the negatives out there. Cheap cost and quick turnaround times are the positives.
