horizontal velocity is independent of vertical! same stopping power, because the arrows enter at a different angle they travel different distances thru the rubber, therefore different penetration! great video my man, thank you! i am going to look into picking up some 2x4 and a rubber mat tomorrow!
the best target i have used has been compressed cardboard layers , we used all thread and 2x12 frame and a couple hundred layers of cardboard stacked and compressed with the all thread . the layers stop the arrows with friction between layers and lasts for years . no scuffing or residue on the arrow , just do not use waxed cardboard the arrows will not come out . the stacked cardboard target we used had paper targets pinned to the front for practice for an indoor dot shoot . use a good foam deer target for broadhead practice , they have trouble pulling out of the cardboard and inserts pull out .
Awesome video man thanks so much I actually am halfway done making this exact backstop and was worried about penetration however I’m good now I’ve spent days trying to find a backstop video like this but everyone is using a lesser Material than stall mats like I am
Yup they work for crossbow as well but getting the bolts back out is not easy! I hung one on a similar frame for a backstop at our indoor range but you really don’t want to miss the target lol
We put some of those mats up last spring as a backstop. . .haven't had an arrow go through yet. . . great video. As far as other ideas, we just posted a video of our DIY archery simulator that we made, would love to see what you guys could come up with or ideas to improve ours!!! - Great work guys - Freezer Bound Outdoors
I need an opinion, I was asked this evening if a 1/4" rubber mat would work behind a hay bale if the arrows are target arrows fired off of a 30# draw fiberglass bow? I thought that is would be plenty of thickness but would like to hear your input.
I was told by a bow tech at Cabelas to just hang carpet. Hung it, shot it with 340 grain field point from a Mission Craze. As predicted, blew right through! DO NOT USE CARPET!
If you use a stall mat it needs to swing. That way you won’t over penetrate. The backstop can’t be rigid. Place styrofoam panels on your metal walls just as a precaution.
If you're saying the horsemat can damage your arrows why are you shooting your arrows into them lol? I shoot the same exact arrows. FMJ 340 11.3 5mm and I have a horse mat I use as a backstop as well. The horsemat I use is less than 3/4" thick. It's like 7/8". Since mine is thinner and if the FMJs are made of aluminum and durable material, do you think my horse mat would still damage the arrows?
I love that you call it a lawn shed.
Ole silver spoon 🥄!!
Hello my friend, good test of the back stop. Take Care.
Thank You for taking time to drop in!

Thanks for that! Best of Luck!
Loved the deer drawling 😁
Good test of a budget friendly option!! I was surprised how well the backstop performed. Awesome backup 👍
Im gonna need to take away Chris's Crayon! Thanks for watching sir!
All I’m saying is that’s a beautiful picture of that buck. 😁
Lol! Chris probably won't live it down!
Great ideas and fun to watch. Chris is a natural on video.
Thank very much! And thanks for watching!
Looks like the back stop is going to do the job. I might have to build one of those
Very simple and relatively inexpensive. Except for lumber nowadays?

We may have to test that out. I have seen a couple videos on that as well
I've used compressed cardboard also. It was crude and homemade.
@@tomkeltescheverythingoutdo2379 how much cardboard did it take?
Very cool. An indoor bow range would be awesome. Great video.
Chris has the indoor range covered!
Fantastic guys! I wouldn’t hesitate using your backstop indoors! Works great. Nice demonstration 🙂👏👏👏👍
Appreciate that sir, thank you for checking in on us!!!
Good Idea for a back stop for sure!
It works like a charm
Great video on testing the back stop
Appreciate you watching sir! Hope all is well at your place!
Awesome presentation I'm building one thank you very much for what you do
We greatly appreciate you checking out the video. Hope your build goes well! Happy Shooting
Awesome backstop. That thing worked perfectly! Also I love the artwork on the mat. Someone has a hidden talent...😂 great video guys!
Lol, Chris may sign up for some art classes!

We haven't had an arrow pass through it yet. Stall mats work really good. Thank you for watching and for dropping us a comment

Never a good idea to miss!!! Lol hopefully we can stay semi in target! Thanks for stopping in guys!!!
Well that was interesting! Great video!
Thanks for checking it out man!
Great share love the shots
Thanks for checking it out 😊
Wonder if you put a couple of layers of Rigid insulation over top of the rubber mat would be better?
That would be an interesting concept...may have to try it!!!

We'll take a look, that would be pretty cool to have an indoor simulator! Thanks guys for stopping by!
Great idea!
Chris comes up with some good ones from time to time!
Wow thats pretty cool!!
It does work pretty well!
nice vid. i would cut a strip of the bottom and glue it in the seam of the 2 mats
That sure would work!
That definitely stops it. Great idea!
If it only stopped bullets
Very cool idea! That would be great for my recurve bows. How thick is the mat you used on that back stop?
So for this design we used 3/4” rubber stall mats. Thanks for watching!
@@after5outdoors-chris619 you are very welcome. cool i will have to check out those mats! Thanks

Alot of variables I think. Distance is one factor, are you talking square bale or round?
@@After5Outdoors IT would be a square bale at about 10 yards. There is also a wooden wall behind the rubber matting.
@@randyyoung8619 I think you might want to test it in a safe environment

DO NOT USE CARPET!
Many layers of carpet may do it but certainly not one layer
@@After5Outdoors nah, not worth the effort. Like your idea
This way is much easier
l like that crossbow...wow nice
It's a shooter!!!
Now do crossbow. :D I'm totally building this.
I'd like to get one at some point

That's what I need a back stop Im using plywood and the arrows go threw the wood killing the fleche
This setup was really simple to make

Repeated shots may. We used these arrows to show the mat would stop them
@@After5Outdoors thanks
Yes sir
Where can I find a stall mat?
Usually at a store that sells livestock equipment, Fleet Farm, Tractor Supply Company etc
What thickness did you use?
In this build we used 3/4” thick mats, but I’m sure half inch would get the job done.
Second shot sounds like a 7 mag
There's alot of room in his "lawn shed" quite the echo lol
That's toight!!🤑😝🤣😅🤟👍✌️
👍👍
