I love Holy Motors so much! I watched it last year during French American Heritage Month (in July), and put it back on my list this year for FAHM. So bizarre. So good.

Sometimes I feel like critics and cinephiles alike don’t have a consistent enjoyment of movies. Sometimes I wonder how much a film simply based on its legendary status or having high ratings really does influence a person perception of what "good" art is. Whether it be withholding high ratings or feeling obligated to rate something high because it has legendary status. And the willingness to ignore problems: like no, I don’t think I need to watch Woody Allen or Roman Polanski films to have a great encompassing knowledge of movies and I don’t think I’m missing anything in life by not watching them. David Lynch is an example of a Director that a lot of people seem to like, but I don’t really care for. No not because some of his work tends to confuse people, but rather I find his work, boring. But people say that not liking certain directors movies or certain films make someone less or have less taste. I just think it’s odd and not accurate. just a point of discussion, something to think about.

Taste is very subjective, even the most critically acclaimed directors like Akira Kurosawa or Stanley Kubrick are "meh" for some cinephiles / filmmakers. It's true that a majority of people like them because their work are more accessible and easy to like, but it will still not click for some people. Like for me, I think Fargo is a bit overrated even though it is widely beloved by people. The pacing and the humor didn't work as well for me and that's ok. Fargo has legendary status and it's high rated but I try my best to not let that influence me.

@@CultureDTCTV I recently graduated with my psychology degree and I have been reviewing films for years, but I wonder if there’s some sort of psychological effect that occurs just by being exposed to an average rating and what effect that has on interpretation of a work. While taste is subjective, it is also impressionable. One of my best friends said they completely died when I gave chunking express a 7 out of 10. I’ve since watched that movie multiple times and gave it a better rating, but I often wonder how much that was influenced by that friend. To be frank, I don’t care if the film has legendary status, but it is hard to resist checking something out to see what all the hype is about. I See people who are hateful online if you don’t agree with them. I mean house by Obayashi literally has the exposed chest of teenage girls (some of them might’ve been teens when it was shot) and people defend it, there’s a whole bunch of people who dissent about the the presentation of lesbian women in the handmaiden by park chanwook, and Don’t get me started on Allen or Polanski. I just grow tired of people who insult others for not thinking the same way they do.

@user-dm3fk3ho1z I think other people's opinions, reviews, reputation, expectations are bound to affect one's experience in watching a film, it's pretty hard to not let those things influence you, but I just accept what it is, I like what I like and dislike what I dislike. Congrats on the psych degree though.

@@CultureDTCTV Fair, It is impossible to avoid the influences of the world and its people, I guess it’s just determining what you think is right and good after all your own personal considerations that matter.
