i played warframe completely casual and completely blind. i "started" when the music warframe, octavia, was the current Hot Topic and wanted to get that warframe, so i figured out how i would go about doing that. her quest required this quest, but this quest required that quest, so i ended up doing them and getting so deeply involved during the precursor quest to The Second Dream. holy shit what a crazy moment in any video game.

After all that time, you are about to learn, what, you, are… to that song. This can very easily be considered the "Main theme" of Warframe.
The main characters, the "Tenno" are a force of impartiality amongst chaotic wars.
A cold, unbending reality cleaving through unbridled chaos in a world without compassion.
So the calm amidst beats and noises of chaos and adrenaline makes a lot of sense.

The between the lines story is incredible.
A mother singing to her children who are dreaming. The children singing back and then proceed to sing together.
The war chanting towards the end representing either the Orokin or the enemies in the system. And then the crescendo of the children ending the corrupt empire of the Orokin.

@@popkhorne5372 I always considered the whole song kind of like the ongoing storyline of the game. It starts out somewhat mournful for the lost/sleeping Tenno, The Lotus singing to them and they responding. Then as the percussion kicks in it represents the turmoil in the system as the Grineer and Corpus proceed to essentially bring the entire system to a state of almost war, this included the waking of the Tenno to defend the system. And as it ends, it's the Lotus almost mourning how her beloved children basically have no choice but to life a life of constant conflict.

You bring up the point that it sounds serene but chaotic, and that really nails what Warframe is: it's the bloodiest, most violent game to ever understand what being born different or hurt by life feels like. It's a game where you can loose an arrow from a high-tech bow so hard, it pulls off an enemy's head and sends it flying, drives the head into another enemy, and kills that enemy; it also is a game that legitimately understands what having depression and anxiety feels like and how having PTSD changes you, speaking as a sufferer as those things. It's really different to play a game that puts you in touch with being okay with yourself, while also letting you slice a cloned fascist in half at the waist with a rocket-propelled kusari-gama.

Your idea that this song is very conflicting and can make you feel different ways is spot on. Order vs chaos is definitely a huge theme in Warframe, so the idea that the song could feel very chaotic or very relaxed is perfect. You saying that the end of the song leaves you with a confused feeling also makes a lot of sense with story context, since at the point in the story when this plays the player character is going through confusing events that make them wonder what’s going to happen next.

It's actually really interesting seeing your first-time reactions to Warframe through the music, because that same disorientation is also very common in first-time players. Pretty much every friend who's tried out the game has said it wasn't what they thought it was going to be. And from then on, you just keep running into new things that aren't what you expected to find.

Tons of ways to interpret this piece. It's possible the chaos and serenity of the piece is a nod to the Lotus's line "Now we fight on two fronts, the war without, and the war within"
the percussion representing the chaos, sounds of the warframe, operated. But within that loud percussive beat and sound is a soft comforting melody: the calmness representing the Tenno.
Before you get to this quest you always here that percussive beat when you finish a mission, the soft melody completing the song isn't revealed to you until you learn who you are.

It's a pretty big game with many different tracks. Ambience is a big one sure, as well as "combat" music. The ones you listened to here are all related to thematic quests, three of the major ones. So you mention how your mind wanders to try to think about how to "feel"? Well there is action or visuals happening during the track (though this one was edited a bit to mash all the bits of the track together as normally its split with action or a cutscene) so that makes sense.

Warframe is just a grindy game with much farming, pretty fun but, somehow meaningless, until the player reach the quest where this song is played, then you know a lot more about the lore and the game changes because now you play with a new focus. Even when some players left the game for some time, usually they come back when there is a story update. This song is beautiful and has a special meaning for players cause it comes with a very special moment ingame.

I have started playing Warframe back in 2013, when it was way less than it is right now. This Song represent a huge step within the story of Warframe, which is, even if it would be a big AAA Studio making it, absolutely incredible. It is a loot shooter unlike any other , in my opinion, packed with lore and Story Quests.... if you keep playing until the Quest "second Dream" it sucks you in and you want more and more of that Story. Considered it is free to play it is amazing what it has become.
When I have found your channel it was for "Sleeping in the cold below" from the Quest "call of the Tempestarii" .... after that I landed here and by the start of the Song it took me back when I have heared it the first time.... All the emotions and memorys came back to me, I remembered my first steps in this mind blowing universe they have created and you should defenately give it a try for yourself. When "New War" is finished there will be even more to come, I can't wait for it .
I also still remember my first visit in Fortuna , song called " we all lift togheter" . Believe me, you want to also check that out for yourself. Those guys do not just do it for the money, they also enjoy what they do and they want to create a fascinating experience as much as we want to play it.... I rather spend 100 $ / €in my case/ for Warframe than throwing it away for games like Battlefield or another game of the so called AAA studios.
Warframe has made work intensive changes in UI and probably every single game mechanic over the years, constantly evolved to what it is now, still evolving, growing, fascinating.
A true jewel among the underdogs, i would even say all the games out there.
It is so rare a game has such a deep lore , packed with emotions and mysterys in a way you can enjoy for years. The last game for me with such emotional memorys for the characters was Mass effect 1-3, even if I have spend less than 100 hours for it.... for warframe it is 3000 + already (- updates etc)
If you decide to play it for yourself do not forget about the wiki, it is helpful even for vets.
Stay save and sound, Tenno wuki1989 ;) (Tenno are the guys controlling a warframe)

One thing I'll say about Warframe after having played it for years, it's definitely a game completely unique in what it does. It has this blend of sci-fi and steampunk/cyberpunk with a mixing of Eastern and Western design both on a conceptual level and a musical one. There are certain tracks such as this that stand above the rest but even ambient songs that play during certain areas or missions have this way of sticking with me regardless such as Cold and Gold. It's a very fun and, as said, a very unique game but just like the game itself the music can be a bit hard to get into, but if it gets ya it really sinks its hooks in.

Like, for 50+ hours, or if you started the game before the quest it comes from was added, even years, you believed Warframe to be a game where you play as some kind of cyborg or maybe an AI, in control of these borderline omnipotent space ninja creatures.
Then, you get sent to Lua aka the moon because one of your enemies has found out that something of utmost importance is hidden there and you need to protect and retrieve it.
You arrive there, beat back that enemy and open the stasis pod. Suddenly, your space ninja just collapses. Out of the pod comes crawling a small, frail human figure wearing a black overall. It just about reaches the ninja which, upon its touch, suddenly springs back to life.
This song playing in the background. This is what you are. The massive reveal that your player character is in fact not some artificial creature or AI. You are human. For the entirity of the game you were a human dreaming to be a powerful space warrior.
At the time, it's utterly mind-blowing.

3:59 funny you say that. thats kinda how warframe feels sometimes, once you REALLY get comfortable with it's mechanics and fighting gameplay. While everything is so chaotic in missions withenemies shooting from everywhere, objectives lighting up in some cases etc, once you get to a certain point, you sorta just start to be able to focus and get into the battle flow and just fight and react. I'd often in the past just chill in a survival mission for like 10-20 minutes to "de-stress" with some "murder and chill" I often joke. Also happens a lot where everyone else in the mission has moved on and wants to finish the level and I'm still cleaning up remaining enemy forces who aren't mandatory anymore cause the objectives done, and I often just excuse myself by saying, "sorry, got lost in the combat again".
Something-something: "A tenno flows like fire over the battle terrain.", is a line that the main guide character the Lotus mentions during the tutorial mission.

10:54 there's a reason why this is many players favorite track in the game. and it has to do with how it is delivered. the context fits so well, that it just hits in all the right ways. and it becomes impossible to hear it, and not be brought back to the moment you first got to it.

The reason all three soundtracks are so different is that the soundtrack is based on events and less on the game as a whole or moment-to-moment actions.
    - "This Is What You Are" is the closest track to a "Main Theme" of Warframe. The context is about the relationship between Lotus (the woman on the cover) and the Tenno (all player characters). This is why there is a leading female voice "calling" and a choir of children answering the call, a mom and her children. This relationship is the main subject of Warframe as a whole.
    - "Old Friend" is about just one event that takes place during the main questline.
    - "Sleeping In The Cold Below" is about a side quest in the game.
Later on you might listen to "We All Lift Together" and "For Narmer" and you will get the same feeling. If you do, listen to "We All Lift Together" first and "For Narmer" right after for the full experience.

I love this song. So Warframe is essentially a game about magical space ninjas. You can hear the asian influence in the instruments near the beginning of the song, and the big taiko drum sounds in the second half of it. The song has the solitary woman's voice, and is answered by a children's choir. It sounds peaceful and soothing, if perhaps melacholic. Then the song goes nuts on the drums and breaks out into battle music. Then the woman's voice comes back to lead the children's choir in contrast and in complement to the battle music. Like you said, it's both chaotic and peaceful at the same time. It's all so very appropriate to the themes of the game, and it's also appropriate in a meta sense, as the game is all about finding a kind of zen in the midst of combat gameplay that can only be described as a complete clusterfck.

Warframe is a very..unique kind of game. It's free for the most part but you can quickly advance and unlock more stuff if you pay real cash or trade in game items for it from other players (I don't know if this is still a thing, I haven't played in two years). It's a very grindy kind of game with a unique story about magical space ninjas in personal mechsuits (sorta) and absolutely stellar music, but as you said a lot of the tracks require context. This song and To Take It's Pain Away are probably the most important tracks in the game up to the point where I played, both pieces of music are incredibly emotional and impactful.
Another great track that was pointed out before from Warframe is "We All Lift Together", its got a completely different feel than most of the other songs just like the sea shanty tune. It's something like a railroad worker's tune you'd hear being sung by said workers to lift their spirits during a long day of back breaking labor; which ain't at all far from that point of the game where you hear it for the first time.

For extra context, in Warframe you're called a Tenno, and the body that you use to play the game is known as a Warframe. For years, the veteran warframe players didn't actually know what a Tenno was, or how they seemingly were able to just switch into another body at will. Eventually, the quest called 2nd dream released. Long story short, you were tasked to go to the moon to retrieve somebody from some stasis pod or some such (I don't recall the proper terminology, it's been years since I played 2nd dream) but it was clearly important because your big bad at the time ends up sending an assassin known as the stalker to try and stop you. So in the whole mission you and the stalker throw down from time to time on your way to the pod, but once you release the pod, suddenly your warframe collapses to the ground like a ragdoll and your screen goes black, like you yanked out a TV cord. As the screen comes to, the small person who had been in the pod is crawling on the ground toward your warframe, you controlling them as they do. As they reach the warframe, they touch its back and this score starts up, the beginning of it. They seemingly restart your warframe, your frame getting back up and picking up the small one in their arms. This is what a Tenno is, this is what you are.
Now obviously I did a kinda shit job explaining it, but yes, warframe is incredibly unique and hard to explain in any abridged sense, even now I left out so much context because I realized I couldn't explain the sentients, or what the Stalker really is, or space mom without writing a whole essay here. But if you read this far, give it a shot. Warframe rocks, ad should be getting cross-save soon, helping to further bolster numbers.

What actually made this quest important though, is that this was when warframe *really* started up. It's when you realized this wasn't your average F2P third person action game. Warframe was and still is, incredibly unique and cool as hell, with a killer score.
