    *Tools Needed
    Power Drill - amzn.to/1OxMfnt
    12″ Miter Saw - amzn.to/1VUVo8s
    Kreg Jig (optional) - amzn.to/1X7Bd9H
    Orbital Sander - amzn.to/1VUVNYy
    Jig Saw - amzn.to/1VUXkhn
    Optional 6″ Hole Saw - amzn.to/1VUXlBP
    First, you’ll want to build the frame for the cornhole platform. Lay the 2×4’s on a flat surface and connect the boards using 2 1/2 wood screws. I’d recommend drilling pilot holes prior to using the screws to eliminate the chances of wood splitting. Use 2 screws in each corner. More info and blueprints in downloadable plans.
    Use 1 1/2 inch long wood screws to attach the 1/2 inch plywood to the 2×4 frame. Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting when the screw goes in. Place screws around the perimeter of the board spaced about every 8-10 inches. Countersink the screws a bit so you can fill them in with wood putty in a later step.
    Cut the legs for each platform to 12 inches. Later, we’ll angle the boards and shorten them just a bit. First, measure 1 3/4 inches down from the top of the board and make a mark. Second, measure 1 3/4 inches from the side. You’ll drill a 3/8 inch hole where the center marks are. Use a compass to draw an arc which will round off the top so the legs will be able to fold.
    The rounded side should be flush with the corner. Then use a 3/8 inch drill bit to go through the hole in the leg and to create a new hole in the 2×4 frame behind it. Learn more in downloadable plans.
    Use 4 1/2 inch long 3/8 inch carriage bolts to attach the leg. Put a washer and wing nut on the inside of the leg. Check to make sure they open and close easily. You can use an orbital sander to sand down high spots on the arc in case the leg isn’t folding easily.
    Put the cornhole table on a large and flat table. Shove a box underneath and check to ensure the back board is at 12″ above the surface. Once this has been done, slide the corner of the platform over the edge of your surface (Video above helps describe this process). Cut the angle on the miter saw. It will typically range between 5 to 10 degrees. Here is a photo of the legs with the angle cut.
    The next step is to cut the hole for the platform. I had to re-take a few photos which is why you see a hole in the boards and paint in the previous photos. Measure 9″ down from the top of the board. Then measure 12″ from the side of the board. Where both marks meet is where you will want to mark for the center of the hole. Then use a 6″ hole saw to cut the hole. If you do not have a hole saw you can use a jig saw. Make sure to hand sand the edges of the hole after cutting.
    Do a google search for all sorts of ideas on how to customize your boards. I used masking tape to create a 1 1/4 inch border and an arrow. Paint the boards using a brush or roller. I used latex paint because it has low VOC (fumes) and is durable. I used a stencil to paint on a Nebraska Huskers design. You can order custom stencils and NCAA licensed decals from companies like decalsextremeonline.com and vinyldisorder.com.

    Brilliant post... I was really inspired to make my own for my wife as a graduation gift hers was for Drexel. One note though mine turned out awesome right up until the urethane step.
    If you have allot of white as my design did. An oil based urethane will cause white paint to yellow so they kind of looked like crap at the finish. She still loved them and it was a great learning experience...
    Thx!

      Shawn Thompson Hi Shawn! So glad the project went well. Yes, I too had a slight yellowing to the tint on the white areas. Didn't bother me too much, but now I recommend a minwax waterbased stain if there is white being used. Cheers!

    Hey I'm trying to do the Kreg Jig method. I'm still learning how to use the Jig. I was wondering what your measurements are set at on the jig when drilling those holes. I accidentally drilled to deep and went through the plywood. I might still need some learning to do on how that Kreg jig works

    Very nice looking build! Something I learned using a Kreg jig; make sure to pull up on the drill and clear the wood chips when drilling the pilot holes...also best to use a corded drill on high speed...saves from heat build up which can cause the tip of the bit to snap off.

    Also, I was recently working with Frog Tape and learned a tip. If you paint one additional coat of the base coat color AFTER (yes, AFTER) you mask it, if the tape leaks, it only leaks the color desired under the tape (so who cares?!? perfect!) and that leaking seals any further leaking. And then, after that coat dries, follow-up with the top color (I do 2 or 3 coats of this -- same with base coat too BTW). Nonetheless, when you peel the tape off, you get amazing, crisp lines. Of course, this is no replacement for doing a good job of applying the tape to prevent any leakage, but it's insurance! For your project, Pete, you were masking the naked wood with the Frog Tape, something I would think would be a little risky, given wood's tendency to be an irregular, porous substrate that also likes to wick! But, your results looked to be perfection! I would have been inclined to paint a coat of the polyurethane over the tape (the one side of the tape anyway) to lock it down before applying the white paint. But, again, you seemed to have no problems (that video captured anyway :^) ). Also, I'll add that using the technique I describe here, I had no troubles peeling the tape off a week later (after all coats were good n' dry if not fully cured even!). I worked beautifully. Lastly, it's also a good idea to pull the tape off at the most extreme angle you are able to (essentially back on itself, or as close to 180 degrees as you can), and not perpendicular to the project or shallower. Doing it the right way creates a shearing effect that promotes crisp lines! Okay... I'll stop now. :^)

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  9 років тому

      ***** Thanks for all the info! The tape I used created a pretty good seal, but not 100% perfect. Still looked pretty crisp though and there were a few areas to touch up. Can't wait to see how your boards turn out! Please send in a photo or post to the fb page if ya want to! Cheers - Pete

      DIY PETE Thanks Pete. My boards are turning out great and I will be sure and post pictures on your Facebook page (after I give the boards as gifts to my in-laws.... don't want them to see them on Facebook before they get them and ruin the surprise!). Right now, I'm all done with the latex painting and was able to get calendared decals from a local graphics shop here in Brookings, SD for the local (John Deere in this case). Thanks again. I'm going to ask a separate question regarding finishing in a new comment above.

    Hey love the plans just wanted to make sure I put the poly over the decals?

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  8 років тому

      +John Kalends If you are using vinyl decals, I would do a light sanding after the final coat of poly is dry with a high grit sandpaper ( 500 or so ) to smooth out the finish. Then wipe with a damp rag. I'd then apply the decal on the smooth finished surface. In the video I only use the top decal as a stencil -- and so I do poly over the painted N and rest of the board. You could poly over the decal if you'd like, but I've made them with the decal on top and the boards have worked great.

      Gabriel LaCross Hi Gabriel! I'd say a good 24 hours for the first coat will be more than plenty. (Probably 12 ish - if the temperature is warmer. I typically wipe on a real thin second coat which dries in a few hours. That will speed up the process. Good luck on the project!

    Hi Pete, can you describe how you painted the Nebraska N using the vinyl decal you used? In your video, it looked like you might have traced the decal with an exacto knife or something? I have the Nebraska N vinyl decals, but I'm unsure of how do get the effect that you did.

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  8 років тому

      +Tyler Cruise Hey Tyler! The outline for the N was all pre-cut on a vinyl plotter so it would have the pinstripe outline. I have a vinyl plotter and was able to create that on the machine. You could use a steady hand, ruler, and an x-acto knife to try and replicate it though.

    Great build, Great video. I do have two questions:
    Does the Polyurethane help make the entire board a even and smooth surface? I figured with having a decal on the board, that would be something for the bags to get "caught" on or slowed down by....
    Also, where did you find the stencil for the white ring around the hole?

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  4 роки тому +1

      Hi! I made the stencil using my vinyl plotter, but I'm sure you could find something similar on Amazon, or have a local sign shop make one. The poly does sort of help in making sure the surface has an even slide.

    Awesome video, it helped me tremendously with my own cornhole boards! Just 1 question though, should I also use polyurethane on the sides of the board and on the legs? Or is it only necessary for the top piece? Thanks!

      Hi Joe, GBR! For this I had a stencil made and painted the white logo. But the stencil was made using a vinyl plotter. You'd most likely need to find a local printing company to make a couple N's or you. Vinyl decals should be pretty cheap.

    Hi Pete,I am building my 5th set of boards using your instructions. This time the customer wants a vinyl wrap. I have never done this. I watched a few videos on here and all have different ways of applying it. Since it is being applied to bare wood, should I put a coat or two of minwax down before applying the vinyl wrap? Also once I have the wrap in place would you recommend using minwax on top to seal it or use edge seal tape or both? I just want to make sure the wrap stays in place for as long as they use the boards. Thanks again Pete!!

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  7 років тому

      Hey Jersey! All great questions. You are going to want a super smooth surface prior to applying the vinyl. I've played around with wraps a bit on cars back in the day, but not on wood. I actually recently made another pair of boards though and sprayed a sealer on them prior to applying some large decals. They've stayed in place well. Once the wrap is in place, I would not seal it since the vinyl itself is super durable and made to last for years outdoors. If you aren't wrapping the sides then you might use seal tape, I'm not sure though since I haven't done this exact process. Let me know what you end up doing though --- or if anyone reading this has experience with wraps please chime in! Cheers - Pete

    Pete, a couple questions for you. I built a set using your directions exactly.I built a second set painted as the Irish flag and I had extra wood to make this set from a different project. This time around I used an air nailer instead of screws. It seems to hold up well. Your thoughts? Next question is I did about 5-6 coats of a min wax water based polycrilic. I did the slide test and mine don't slide til around 30". How can I make the boards slicker? Lastly to lessen the weight, can 1x4's be used in place of 2x4's? Thanks Pete!

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  8 років тому

      +TheJerseyDigger Hi! an air nailer can work just fine. 16 gauge is going to be a bit stronger than an 18 gauge connection. Wood glue is definitely something you'd want to use in combination with the nails. -- Yep, you could use 1x4's instead of 2x4's. To make the boards slicker, I'd recommend lightly hand sanding with 800 grit to remove any roughness. If they still don't slide enough, you could think about adding a paste wax or possibly even spraying with some pledge furniture cleaner.

    Pete, thanks again for graciously answering all of my questions below. I now have some questions regarding the finishing of the boards.
    1) Did you de-gloss (i.e., with trisodium phosphate [TSP]) or sand (i.e., with 220 grit sand paper) the painted regions of your boards prior to applying the poly?
    2) Did you have any compatibility issues using the oil-based poly over water-based latex paint?
    3) How many coats of poly did you use?
    4) How much time (roughly elapsed before you poly'd over the paint (i.e., was it "fully cured" out to multiple weeks or just "dried" for a few hours)?
    5) Did you experience any "yellowing" (unfortunate byproduct often associated with oil-based finishes) -- that are especially noticeable on the white painted portions of your boards?
    6) Generally speaking, how did your finish turn out and are there anythings you would have done differently or considered?

    • @frozenrope2822
      @frozenrope2822 9 років тому +1

      ***** ALSO: I actually did not use latex paint on my boards. I found another style of paint, called Acrylic Enamel at Runnings (local farm and fleet store). The brand is Majic Diamond Hard High Acylic Enamel in High Gloss finish. Like latex though, it is "soap and water" clean-up. It's known for its durability and ability to bond to almost any substrate. I used Zinger Bulls-Eye 1 2 3 latex primer over the wood first. The results are outstanding and I'm thinking I won't need a clear coat finish on top, but am exploring it...

      ***** Hi! SO glad you found a good solution. I'm familiar with Runnings :) Small world - I grew up in Aberdeen, SD. Played hockey in high school so I made it to Brookings quite often and it is where we had our state tournament my senior year. To answer your previous questions (a little late I know) -- I did not sand the painted areas -- although it's a good idea. -- And no compatibility issues. Sounds like you got it all figured out though, can't wait to see them!

    Pete AWESOME video! I'm going to build my own boards with the help of your video. I have a couple questions hoping you can help answer.

    2. I'm a GSM of a Hyundai and Mazda Dealer. I want to customise these boards with the Hyundai and Mazda logo to be used at the dealership while customers are waiting for their paperwork to be prepared. Any suggestions as to where to go to have them made or purchased? What size should I be looking for to fit perfectly between the white triangle leading to the hole on your boards?

      Shad, glad that you are gonna tackle this project, it is a really fun one! I have a vinyl plotter so I made my own stencils. However, if you don't have access to one you can order online from a site like www.vinyldisorder.com I would suggest looking online or for a local vinyl cutting service to cut your logos and stencil.
      As for the sizes, you will have to see what looks best to you, for my circle around the rim it was a 7" diameter circle. For the logos, about 12" wide would be a good size to have them fit in the triangle.
      Cheers!

      +Jeffrey Schechter Hey Jeff! I will double check when I get home. I think I switched to recommending the 1 inch screws and 1/2 jig setting because the 1 1/4 may have been a little too long and some people were having trouble with the end of the screw going through the plywood a bit.

    If you want to go cheap on the stencils, a hobby knife and some artist sketch tape or scotch will do the trick. What I learned also was that 2x4s are never truly straight, and also that just because they sell the board in these dimensions doesn't meant it really is or the corners are at right angles either. Go slow with jig, as you will more than likely as I did want to go back and round out the circle due to bad curves with some chisels.

    One of my cornhole legs is on at a slight angle when extended due to me drilling off center a bit. What would be the best way to fix that? A bigger drill bit to make a straight entry? I can still get the board to the regulation height but the appearance bugs me. Thanks!

    • @DIYPETE

      Hey Pat! You might just re-cut the 2x4 quick and drill again. If you don't want to cut another board, you could most likely bore the hole a little larger, but then you'd want a bit bigger bolt so it doesn't have a loose fit. (simply re-cutting that one board might be the easiest option) Best of luck!

Here is the circular bit which will create the perfect 6 inch circle. amzn.to/24LVR14 However, if you referring to something to help paint the circle around the ring -- I unfortunately don't have a resource to recommend -- What you can do is use painters tape to cover the ring area -- then use a compass to draw the ring - then a razor blade to cut the tape along the line to create a taped off area. Lastly paint. ( I have a vinyl plotter and made the stencil )
