You sand over the decal also. When sanding you only do a light sand. There shouldn't be any damages to the decal because you will have a coat of poly over it.
I have some boards I put poly on and they are slick. Someone put some baby powder on bags once. We could not get them to stick. The heat sometimes makes the boards slicker too.
Did you apply poly to the bottoms? If so, how many coats? Also, do you have to do all the top coats separately from the bottom coats, or can you do top and bottom simultaneously? Not sure how to rest the boards to dry if top and bottom are done all at once. Thanks.
Do you apply a clear over the wood before you lay the decal? If not what sand paper grit do you use to avoid bubbles? Also what wood do you use for your top boards? Thanks! Great video!
I do something similar but do not poly before decals. Usually I never sand past 220. I never have issues with bubbles but make sure to use water based poly with decals (safer). Also I use birch. Paint and stain work so we’ll with it.
I sanded that board with 220 grit. I placed the decal directly to the wood. I used a card to work out the bubbles. Just take your time. Then I applied poly over everything. I hope this answered your question?
It's a good idea to put a coat or two of poly on the wood to seal it Before you put the decal down. It will adhere much stronger and you won't run the risk of the decal pealing up on the edges or forming bubbles under it, which can happen with bare wood when it's out in the sun on a really hot day.
Hey man, currently painting boards with a similar design to this. Did you do any sanding after the paint but before the poly to knock down the inside edge of the paint outline a bit? And if not do you feel any unevenness now on those inside edges?
I realize this video is a couple of years old, but I just found it. I made one similar a few months ago and I did not sand down after paint but before applying the poly. I didn't feel any ridge from the paint by the tape, so I didn't feel the need to try to sand it. It came our really nice.
Well..... I first sanded down the board then installed the decal. I then applied the Poly over that and sanded down the entire board including decal between coats. Does that answer your questions?
I have tried sanding the poly after the coats, however the paint and decals end up with a white haze over them from the poly. I cant seem to get it off and it dulls the colors if the paint and " scratches" the decal. Any suggestions? Btw I use 400 grit and an orbital sander.
@@boybluenyc1 Instead of using an orbital sander I'd recommend sanding very lightly by hand. Just take the sheet of 400 grit and fold it over a couple times. Then rub back and forth, with the grain, lightly maybe 5-10 strokes and you'll feel the difference. If you still run into any issues you may need to let the poly dry longer before sanding. Try two hours of dry time. If that doesn't work, let it sit over night before sanding. To reduce the risk of messing up, try on a scrap piece of plywood. Oh, and you can even use 220 or 320 grit.
I don’t normally interact with Boston Red Sox fans being a Yankee fan myself 👀, BUT, I REALLY need to know how you managed to get smooth edges with absolutely no bleeds?!! 😳. And by the way, I was just kidding about the Red Sox remark, KIND OF! 😜😆😆

With the poly, do you find that the boards are more sticky and the bags stick and don't slide all that well?

I also am wondering this as I’m working on some boards right now. Do you have an answer to this?
